just got a D5600 with standard lens & telephoto lens at Best Buy, Attleboro MA for $599...seemed like a good deal to me.
I just got the D3300 and honestly I love it. I don't see myself wishing it had a touch screen since it doesn't really bother me (but that's just me). The focusing is not the best but not because it won't focus well, but because of the noise which depends on the lens.
Same for me. And the benefit of not having touch screen is extra battery life.
Focusing not being the best for me is because I went for manual lenses as they were a whole lot cheaper. But practice makes perfect!
The Life Of Jorge so a better lens give you better focusing? I'm confused at this point now, please explain.
I agree. I actually don't like touch screen - all you end up with is a screen covered with fingerprints!
This still makes me feel good about the deal i got on my d5300.
You can also get a refurbished D5500 (body only) for about $500 which is another option if you want the touchscreen over the GPS (compared to the D5300) and don't mind losing snapbridge (compared to the D5600).
Variable aperture lenses are really the bane of my existence. I used one as my main lens for 5 years and then upgraded to a sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and it's soooo awesome to be able to zoom with a constant aperture.
If the touch screen is important go for a used D5500. The 5300 has the flip out screen but isn't a touch screen. The 5500 doesn't have GPS though so, if that's important, go for the 5300.
GPS is cooler to have than a limited touchscreen, imo. Battery drainage is the only downside to that.
Jonathan Snow to say a touchscreen isn't nice is odd...
slaphead55 when your display is all smeared up it is difficult to fine tune your photos.

But If it was fully touchscreen and worked as good as a smart phone, I would agree with you about the oddity of not wanting a touchscreen.
I just think, If people need a touch screen, get a Sony. Nikon and Canon are just too far behind in this realm. As of now, people are paying too much for not so good tech for the 3400 or 5600. In terms of tech performance/per dollar...It's overpaying no matter how you slice it because it feels like outdated technology. If you are going to feel outdated. Might as well pay less for it.
LOL, its nice to have but to almost pay double is NOT. So 5300 is the best pick for a starter.
I just got the D3300 instead (I wanted A6000 initially but way beyond budget) and I can say I'm surprised by the photos it takes, even with the measly 18-55 lens. Indeed, I do intend upgrading to a 35mm 1.8 or who knows what else, but, for the time being, as an amateur photographer, I really appreciate the camera. I could have used the amenities of the D5XXX series, in truth, but I'm not complaining either. There's a huge price difference in here (Romania, precisely) and it's outright a big step-up from the smartphone camera quality. Just my side of the story, any dSLR you get is going to amaze you for a first-timer.

Tony I think you did a great job on your video I shoot aD3200 and you're right there is no better solution than to go with a D5300....for a upgrade and the money.

I recently picked up the Nikon d5300 from Costco bundled with the new AF-P 18-55 and AF-P 70-300 lenses, Nikon bag, and 32gb SD card for $600 brand new! This is my first DSLR and I'm coming from a smartphone as my main camera....and boy is there a difference! The picture quality is amazing and the articulating screen definitely becomes useful when taking those low level shots. This is a killer camera for the price and I highly recommend it.
Started with d3300 a year ago - learned how to do all the things that other cameras have built in. now i really know how bracketing works and how painful it is to do many other things. as a start camera i'd say its great price, to see if you can do photography or not. then its time to upgrade and i'd say you need to know what you will do - travel/sports/nature/landscape as for all of these there is a different type of camera.
After being out of photography for about 20 years I love my d3400. Issues such as touch screen and articulated screen were not issues and certainly not something that I would have paid extra dollars for. D3400 has full manual functionality and the menu is not that hard to work through. So far used it for family, sport, wildlife and architecture. Also has on camera editing features. Not as basic a piece of kit as people suggest.
Also, D3400 has limited dynamic range because of 12bit raw files while D5300/D5500/D5600 is capable of 14bit raw.
Lovin' my D5600. Got a deal on Amazon for $599.00. (New) with the kit lens. I purchased several other lenses because unlike Sony, they were cheap. I think it's a very under rated camera, and bests more expensive models in features and mega pixels. It's also very small, like a mirrorless. The perfect entry level camera in my view, and "some" pros even use it.
The touch screen is awesome makes like so much easier in my opinion . Its amazing.
I agree, no touch screen makes the camera obsolete. Produce the D5600 at a entry level price. Digital cameras as a whole are over priced by about 30%.
I agree D5300 is the best deal. D5200 has banding issue so the latter model D5300 is a good choice. Also, D3400 series cameras has slightly more compressed raw file to reduce file size than D5600, D7200 series cameras. Overall, D5300 series cameras are the best deal among Nikon consumer cameras.
I've had the D5300 for the few months and the lack of a touch screen doesn't bother me at all. It's incredibly easy to control aperture/iso/shutterspeed within seconds
Great video as always Tony - your videos and book are invaluable since I've decided to get seriously into photography last year. However, I think the D5500 would make a better bang-per-buck recommendation than the D5300. For a very similar price new (less than $80 between them), you're getting touchscreen (which the D5300 doesn't get and is antiquated as you noted!), better build with a more comfortable grip, lighter, and about 30% better battery life. The decision to drop GPS was an odd one, but for most people looking at entry level cameras such as these, I doubt GPS is towards the top of their list of priorities anyway.
Excellent advice, I have the D3100 and I need a second camera before I replace it, can't go even a day without my camera now. The 5300 will let me use my lens and batteries which is a huge plus, I have 3 nice batteries that seem to work all day, I'll probably get 2 of the D5300's and sell my D3100. I need longer glass now, I love shooting birds and my 55-200 just is too short. Used your F11 rules to shoot the moon the other night, best results I have so far, thanks so much for all your videos, you and your wife do an amazing job!
i ordered my 5600 be here Tuesday , comes with regular lens and 75-300mm lens , all for 799.99 , so i cant wait to start my new adventure in the photographers world! i been learning by watching a lot of videos so when i get back from orders ima deff start taking pictures and learning as much as i can !

I don't understand why Nikon took out the external mic port with the D3400 when the D3300 has it. Also, why doesn't Nikon start incorporating an articulating touch screen to the D3xxx series when the Canon T5i has it and it's an entry level camera?

I disagree with Tony here. Tony emphasized the utility of having a touch screen then recommended the D5300 as having more features.. but it doesn't have a touch screen. GPS it does have over the D5600 but that isn't important to me for taking great photos - having a great UI with a touch screen is important. Also the D5500 is lighter and has a way better grip than the D5300.
I agree sometimes old cameras can make for a good deal. The Cannon 60D, 70D case in point over the 80D, but I disagree here. I highly do not recommend buying a d5300. If you want an older Nikon go with the D5500.
I've been using a D5200 and have been super happy. Not seeing those anymore though...managed to buy mine new for $400 last year. I decided to switch it out for a D300 just recently however
Tony & Chelsea I have always liked your videos. The Nikon D5600s interactive navigation and articulate flexible flipping screen gives it an edge over Nikon D5600. Faster focusing, bracketing with a built-in shutter makes a big difference in getting the exact lighting and shots of the scene. Specially for this feature in D5600 it would be preferred to D3400. However, the cost also plays a factor. Where Nikon D3400 is only for $300, Nikon D5600 is for a costlier for $500. N140 can be preferred specially for the zoom range. However, it is refurbished but it comes with a warranty.
Hi Tony...This is Sayan From India it was a great video. the only one in TH-cam which tells the truth. I was actually expecting you to tell that the 5300 is a better choice.. I m a proud owner of this camera since last 2 years and I can confirm everything that u said is 100%true. 5300 is way better then any of this considering the usability and price point. Oh and i just bought your Book Stunning Digital Photography. It's really awesome.. Learning a Lot.
If you don't have a touch screen, program the multiselector centre button to magnify to 100% during playback and navigate with the multiselector. Its quicker than a touch screen for reviewing and makes it redundant. Touch screens aren't the big deal they are made out to be, they just end up with finger print smudges all over them as this viideo demonstrated.
for all those saying they are so glad they didn't buy a d3400, first of all the battery life is amazing 1700 shots on the d3400 and on the d5600 its 800 shots its also recommended that you need to charge the battery on the d5600 for 8 full hours compared to the recommended time on the d3400 witch is 2 hours huge difference if you're shooting for the hole day or are doing astro photography the focus on the d3400 i admit is terrible but there is one small thing that makes up for it, the time mode in manual allows you to have a custom shutter speed without holding the shutter down like bulb mode so you don't need to buy a remote witch is why there is no remote port on the d3400 (just notice i don't own a d5600 so i dont know 100% if it didn't have a time mode but im pretty sure it doesn't correct me if i'm wrong)

I'm totally with you on the 18-140, they are a tiny bit more expensive in the uk - about £240 from a reputable supplier - but I love mine, the image quality is ok although noticeably soft on the long end, and it's the first lens I bought where I can see further through the lens than I can without it!
Now that is a great advice! I have slowly and painstakingly made the same conclusions prior to watching this video. Bought D3400 + 18-55, didn't get enough zoom, sold 18-55 a bought 18-140. Shooting close to the ground is real p.i.t.a. with D3400. Now i'm looking for D5000 series. I should have bought D5300 + 18-140 from the start

I just got a Nikon D5600,
made that choice based on audio jack (for external microphone), touchscreen & flip out screen.
Almost got a Cannon Rebel T6, or a Nikon D3400.
I'm glad I didn't because they have no external microphone jack, or touchscreen, or flip-out screen/monitor.
The lens is noisy / cheap on the Cannon T6 as well, according to other YT videos.
I really like the review because you talk about all the ups and downs, advantages and disadvantages. I made a mistake buying d3400 watching other reviews. they only talk about what you are searching for. But this is really really helpful and really appreciate for talking about d5300. Thank you very much for telling all teh facts of all the cameras

I had lumix G6 that I bought used and after a few times using it, the shutter would not close and I got the error "please turn off your camera and turn back on" To get it fixed would cost me another 200 +. Whatever type of camera a person wants to get make sure your local photo shops will fix that brand. I live in Milwaukee and they only fix Nikon and Canon. After my nightmare with a used camera, I'm leery on buying a refurbished or used one. Im going to master my D3400 before I move up.
I realized you preferred the 5600 to the 3400 when you kept laying the 3400 face down on its exposed lens. I cringed at the way you did that (and with 18-140mm lens as well).
I agree the D5300 is great but no touch screen. With the new firmware, snapbridge now works perfectly on my D5600.
Trying to decide best camera for my 13 yr old daughter. We've started taking courses locally with our D3100, and looking to get her the D5300 or T6. We're a Nikon family so hard to consider the Canon, but want her to have the best bang for the buck. She's mainly interested in Night Landscapes and stars currently. Thanks in advance!!

Camera is amazing for real , I had to send the 18-55mm lens back to Nikon because the camera wasn't recognizing it. But I used the 300mm and the pictures are so amazing man . Specially you can control everything in manual mode. Amazing . love this camera, can't wait to get my other lens back so I can get the full effect
Shot with a vintage Nikon D60 recently. The build quality, fit and finish, operation sounds, shutters etc... are way above the current d3x00 and d5x00... boy did nikon cheaped out on this segment over the years.
i think this is quite an important video, but you should show people what they could get used for the same price as these cameras, that'd be an interesting video
I bought a D5300 because of Tony's reviews. I love it! image quality, usability, value, all awesome :)
No touch screen? No need for it and yes, I use a D5600 and D7200 and rarely use touch. It's really not that much easier and the lcd on the D5600 is FRAGILE. Focus with the D3400 is excellent and never a issue with animals, brds, sports. I'm happier with smaller size and weight of the D3400, especially when hiking and travel. Both have the same excellent image quality.
Costco has the D3400 with a 70-300 and 18-55 vr lenses and a bag, and an SD card, and 2% cash back for $499. It's a steal.

I do lots of close ups and could not live without the touch to focus on the touch screen. I have that on my D5500. I also use the articulating screen often. D5300 does not have either and that would be a deal killer to me.

I appreciate your honesty on these two cameras, it almost leads me to wonder if Nikon is going backward or just plans on supporting the full frame segment in the future?? I am new to photography and the camera I chose was an older model also a Nikon D5200. This is really a split decision for some but for me, it was an easy choice. I had to loose some of the more popular upgrades to be happy with this camera, it does not have touch screen (I hate them, got fat fingers), wireless (No big deal) I have always hardwired, shoots in 1080i (don't care no 4K TV at my house) and the biggest downfall has to be short battery life (Extra batteries are less than ($10 a piece)! This camera does have the movable back viewfinder in live mode, bracketing, came with 2 good lenses, brand new in the box with many other throw ins for less than $350.
Works for my needs and budget! Plenty more of these d5200s out there!!!!

For the D5600 and DSLR's in general, can the focus be locked when in video mode so it doesn't keep hunting around when panning ?
That's the only aspect that I was looking for over my Sony HXV200, which is not capable of manual focus in video mode.
Considering the D5600, even though the zoom on all DSLRs are lacking in comparison to the 30x and up capability of the superzoom category. I know I won't be able to use the DSLR to replace the virtual telescope capability of the Sony, being able to read newsprint off at long range.
Can you please share an in-depth review between d5600 & d7200?

You can tag your photos with GPS using the phone so the GPS part is really not a big problem some people don't want GPS location data some do. I use the image transfer with SnapBridge and don't have any issues at all its pretty quick a little slow on the raw images but the social network upload images are good
I just asked my wife for the D3500 for Christmas, as an upgrade to my D80. My daughter has a D5600 and I’ve seen others’ photos from both - you cannot tell them apart. I can’t afford the extra cost for a silly touchscreen and I personally do not like pop-out/swivel screens. I have one on my Canon camcorder and I hate it. I never use the screen for shooting anyway, I always use the viewfinder. It worked just fine for Ansel Adams. :) I think the D5600 is way overpriced for an entry level camera.
Love your videos Tony. Just a small point, I've seen a few now where you put stuff down on that fancy table and it causes an audible clang transmitted through the mic stand. It's not so bad on this one but another one I saw it was really distracting. You could do with a proper shockmount on the mic... and/or a cushioned area on the table for putting stuff on :) Anyway keep up the good work, you're my number one source of camera info :)
According to Nikon, when I bought my Refurbished D500, the warranty is only for 90 days. I think that is the standard warranty for Refurbs.
That is what I also see on the Nikon web site.
"Refurbished cameras, lenses and accessories include a 90-day limited warranty."
Interesting, I've been pricing an upgrade to my D3400 and was considering the 5600 and the 7200, but then saw you can get a D5300 body for under $400 now and was strongly considering that. This video has somewhat affirmed that thought process for me.

The price difference between the D5300 and D5500 is about 100 dollars, and in your previous videos you talk about how important is to have a touchscreen and how frustrating is that more expensive cameras do not have this functionality, but in this video, you are saying that saving 100 is better than a touchscreen. Can you elaborate on that Tony? Isn't it more easy the touchscreen to touch focus, review images and go through the menus? Or is this not such a difference between this 2 models?
Wish I would have watched this before I got my D3400, darn that Ken Rockwell and his love of all cameras. Oh well still a good sensor for a dedicated microscope camera

The problem I have with the D3XXX series is their lack of improvement since the D3200/D3300. The D3200 and D3300 were and are an absolute bargain, but the later versions seem so redundant.
Can’t believe that touching buttons is now seen as antiquated. I prefer it.
The focusing is only slow on the d3400 if you're using live view.
Tony, please tell Nikon and Sony, the first one to give me a mirrorless flagship with a flippy screen, gets my money. Started with the a6000, then the D5600, and the D7500 for my girlfriend. I don't want to leave the Sony/Nikon eco system. I like Nikon better to operate, but like Sony's features more, so I'm paralyzed on which to move up to. (Z or 7 series) A flippy screen would make the decision, very easy.
I would take it one step further - forget Nikon and forget Canon - get a Sony, Panasonic or Olympus instead, those companies actually push the boundaries and at least try to innovate
Vistolia Photography I was looking at the Canon 750D and nikon D5500, then the Sony a6000 was hard to chose but done loads of research about all of them and ended up getting the Sony A7 instead haha love it
Vistolia Photography I think Sony is great. However, I think they need to work on the UX and UI department. Use A6500 for example: Great camera on paper, but it lags when you drag focus across the screen, its a 5 steps process to turn on s log for the first time...etc. The A99 Mk2 locks at f3.5 when you use AF in video and so on.
My point is none of them are deal breaker, but aren't they annoying, especially when you know these things shouldn't happen.
The canon M5 is much better in those areas.
Jim Huang yeah I know what you mean as used a Canon 700D for a wedding and a lot easier to use but the A7 is the cheapest way to go full frame plus I do a lot of hiking etc so the lightness of the camera and lenses help a lot love the camera and flexibility to use canon and nikon lenses etc but like you say and I feel all cameras like anything have there problems like nikon can't change the aperture in live view if remember and would annoy me after a while
The only Sony camera I've liked is the A7R-2. The a6000 cameras felt awkward to use and a little cheap. Hopefully they can get some better designs.
Daniel Jones aye that would be my next one to get when upgrade but I do like the button placement on the A7 I'm not too bothered tho just love going out and taking photos so long as it does that well I'm happy lol
well I have been using a Nikon d60 for 8 years now ... with how grainy the pictures are its not cutting it when it comes to taking photos of my kids in low light ... i was just going to flat out buy the d5600.... after this video i'm slightly confused... the d5300 seems to be the way . but i imagine the video side of things the 5600 is better...availability also seems limited locally for the 5300

I already have an Analog Camera Olympus OM-1, I was thinking of buying an Olympus OM-D because I could use the lenses I am already have but with canon there is an adapter i can use, so that is why i decided to buy a Canon. What so you think of my decision.

what would you recommend as first prime lens 35 or 50 because people say only 35 1.8G is made for DX format and 50 1.8G is for FX format so 35 is better and basically 50 with crop factor.
But d3400 sensor has higher score on dxo mark among these three cameras you mentioned. And d5300 came in last. Is there noticeable image quality difference?

I have a question and I would appreciate if you could give me your advice: do you still think that now (in June, 2018) the Nikon D5300 + Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm is the best choice for me? I found on Amazon Nikon D5300 for $470 (new) and that 18-140mm VR lens (used one, like new) for $221. I am also thinking about Panasonic Lumix G7 with 14-42mm and that would be cheaper, just around $500. I am looking to ocasionaly shot some videos but my primary reason is still photography in various situations with just one lens I will buy with that camera. So I am looking for the best picture quality I can get and my budget is limited to $700.

I just have a question about DXO rating. How come D3400 is rated higher than D5600, even though the D5600 has 14-bit processing vs 12-bit for D3400? Personally I'm happy with D3300...

Still feel like going with a cheaper camera then buy a good lens is the way to go for me. Right now I have the D3300 with a Sigma Superzoom lens, helps me learn photography and also cover a wide range of possibilities since I travel a lot and don't like too many lenses
