  • Efficient weight transfer is necessary for expert skiing. In this tutorial I explore one way to transfer your weight with minimal movements in high end skiing. I discuss how to perform the movement, why it's needed and a short progression that you can practise to improve your skiing.

    Your statement about making sure the ski is moving in a "forward direction" before shifting your weight during the transition has really helped me stop the urge to manually rotate the skis at the start of the turn. Travel forward, shift weight, press forward in the boot and the pressure engages the outside ski to start the turn. Amazing how that one statement has helped me! Thank you!

    There are a million so called ski tutorials on TH-cam... But this guy has quite possibly the best explanations and demonstrations on skiing out there.... like this one for helping to understand the control and application of pressure particularly before the fall line... dynamic, clear and precise... great job... Never stop learning. Thank you.

    great video again, clear and concise ... really shows how lateral transition is much more efficient than up and down weight transfer. The concept of "standing" on the outside ski and "steering" the turn through the arc is clearly put forth. You got to wait for the turn to happen (most rush it), and the 2 second thing really shows how important that is. Carving is all about efficiency and power. More efficient one is, the more power and trust in the turns. Carving is all about trust. Especially high speed dynamic turns.

    You have to set the inside edge of the ski that will become the downhill ski.. a slight shoulder angulation, towards the bottom of the slope ,..combined with knee angulation towards the uphill part of the slope,..allows ths ski to carve,if weight is positioned in the center of the ski...!

      Agreed!! "THE most important move in skiing". I've always done partials of this, like lifting that outer hip or letting the hill push up the outer ski, which was all AFTER turn initiation, but actually LIFTING the foot before the start of the turn is pure genius. Practiced it all day today and it produced the smoothest, consistent, well-edged, "buttery" turns I've ever made. Eureka. HOW SIMPLE! Thank you Paul.

    it seems not in the gravity law, for this people have fear but it is worth to try. What block me is how skier at 30 deg to ground can reestablish the equilibrium to 0 deg at the other side just by retracting the 70% pressure leg, maybe the speed or maybe some other thing.

    The 2 or 3 count when learning is essential. Without it pushing off onto the uphill ski with a phantom wedge is nearly inevitable and you spend all day lying to yourself (I should know....)
    I think it would be helpful, after the 2 count, specifically, what movement causes the ski to turn. That is, what movement causes the edge change?

    • @youtube-nutzer2895
      @youtube-nutzer2895 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean i dont know if im right but what should cause your ski to change edge is your knee. By putting the knee in a neutral position you release the edge and by tilting it downhill you use the inside edge. Maybe watching it in slowmo will help you understand it for yourself. Just my take on it.

    • @charlesfranz9018
      @charlesfranz9018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really appreciate this distinction. I haven't been able to find where he discusses how to actually put the uphill ski on it's inside edge. I interpret this clip as centering more on the set up for the edge change, emphasizing the requirement for establishing the ski-to-ski weight transfer well before edging to avoid skidding when one wants to enjoy carving. Perhaps ome other subtle lower body weight shift inside and down and forward towards the inside ski tip. Also ometimes I feel like I'm rolling the skis with my knees, also with lower body possibly driving force towords inside skitip or below to establish firm platform on outside ski, combined perhaps with a slight leaning forward and down hill shift from inside pole flick. Still trying to isolate this myself.

    • @charlesfranz9018

      Sorry accidently hit send on previous before editing. Relaxing the downhill leg wants to automatically turn the ski, however this can also cause a skid if it happens too fast. Picking up inside ski leaves you falling downhill. I just lean forward and counter gravity pushing on platform on outside ski so the skis are continually supporting my fall during the turn. I would like to know how to hold off the turn for 2 counts? Lean up hill briefly before plunging?

    • @youtube-nutzer2895
      @youtube-nutzer2895 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlesfranz9018 now its important to visualise this. So imagine this scenario: your right leg is the outside ski so your right ski is on the inner edge while your left ski is on the outer edge. So now you start transfering weight towards your left ski and if you apply pressure your left ski will 'release' its outer edge, since the weight is mostly on the left ski now you also release the edge of your right ski. Once both your edges are released your skis will naturally turn towards fall line, so once they do that you use that momentum and angle the already weighted leftski so the inner edge is pressured and you do the same with the lighter inside ski (in this case the right one).

    Nice way of teaching people how to be late to the new ski

  • @shooter7a
    @shooter7a หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is terribly over-simplified.
    #1 - You do not use just your leg...you use a switch in pelvic bone tilt to take weight off the old DH ski. It is a combination of leg shortening, and pelvic bone tilt switch. You can eve see this in your own example in the video, but you do not talk about it
    #2 - You do not want to go from 90/10 to 90/10 the other way. Ending the turn, you transition to 50/50 weight dist. You start the next turn using two skis...then after a few tenths of a second...transition to one ski. Transferring all the weight to one ski too soon, then turning will make for a slowed transition. Try it on GS skis - it literally wont work. Use BOTH skis evenly weighted to start the turn.
    #3 - You must not go overboard in taking load off the old DH ski. That is the new inside ski, and it LEADS the initiation of the new turn. You must learn the feeling of inside foot supination and pointing the tip of the inside ski toward the outside ski, which will enable stronger supination. Also, as the skis are coming to flat in transition, you want to think about getting the upper body over the new inside knee as you tip and lead with that knee EARLY. From the point at which both skis come under you flat...you should feel like you are tipping the inside ski SOONER.
    #4 - Once you get to about 20 degree edge angles...THEN you smoothly transition to one ski using inside leg shortening and even more aggressive hip leveling. This will before the fall line, ideally. At the fall line you want to be one one ski, fully loaded.
