man, the first time i saw cybele summon when this game was released.... its such a graphical masterpiece for Nintendo DS 3DS wasnt even around back then i guess
Dark Cloud I was stoked enough for the two original release s on Virtual Console for Wii U! But yes I totally agree. Imagine a character creation system where you could choose which element your adept could be and play online with others? New summons, more Djinn to collect, and most importantly...the continuation and growth of this series.
They made good changes from TLA to DD, not just in graphics in some cases. Summons like Catastrophe, Charon, Atalanta Neptune or Daedalus are upgraded 3D versions of GBA's animations. Others, like Judgment, Kirin, Tiamat, Procne or Moloch, are the same but they added animations to show context of how they appear. Cases like Cybele, Ramses and Azul made much more sense now in how they attack. Summons like Megaera, Flora, Nereid and Coatlicue got "revised" models that made them look more like godesses and less like "generic anime girls" (in fact, Coatlicue's revised model was the best, since you can tell that Camelot DID an investigation about that godess to give her an aztec-like clothing, as a mexican, I simply loved the detail!). *Fun fact:* In the first trailer, when it was called just "Golden Sun DS", Nereid's boobs slightly bounce while riding her seahorse. And finally, summons like Meteor, Cybele, Boreas and Ulysses were a *HUGE* improvement in every way, giving then new animations, models and/or better context, making they look awesome! (I still can't believe how they managed to make a simple summon as Meteor from just a giant rock falling from space, to look like God itself taking the biggest rock from the asteroid belt to hurl it at your enemies at light-speed using the Force, but I just *LOVED* it.)
I wouldn't say everything was an upgrade. Certain viewpoints such as catastrophe doesn't give you such a good look at the design as much as the gba, and neirid was a woman on a frog so the context on that and some gas been lost. Beyond that, I always considered the sound effects better in the old as it was more snappy and impactful. And lastly, the particle effects in the past had different forms creating an understanding that everything was done out of psynergy than actual meteors at least to some degree like a mental battle between prof x and jean grey with physical damage. The effects added a lot of personality too. Some of this game loses that and a remake with this less impactful style wouldn't get my support. Maegara, Cybele, Ulysses, are better. Boreas is kind of weak in both to me. Thor loses context with that tech hammer form.
@@furyberserk yeah, a majority of the summons are way less impactful. For instance with Charon it was like.......is that it? Nowhere near as strong as the Lost Age version.
agreed! i'm kinda sad that they changed Boreas being a giant shaved ice machine, because that was weird and gave it charm. but a giant unicorn mech is also pretty cool. also, i notice Tiamat is more based on her dnd self than her mesopotamian self.
@@furyberserk true, while I do enjoy those animations, most summons, spells and weapon crits sounds much less impactful. I still Onder Hile they didn't kept more of the original sounds from the GBA game and it Ould have been much better !
Looking at this today, I found a new appreciation for these animations. Extremely impressive how much they managed to do on the DS of all things. The character models look beautiful, taking advantage of the low poly unfiltered artstyle, and their animations are on point, it's rare to find such elaborate models/rigs on the DS (the Azul mouth deformation ???). On top of that there's a really smart use of both 3D models with interpolated animation AND 2D sprites with instant animations for the effects, which gives them a lot of impact. Oftentimes when translating animations from 2D to 3D, the "oomph" that you get with snappy GBA sprite animations is lost, but here they really knew what they were doing and how to work around the limited hardware. I should definitely replay this game!
This game by complete accident was my first jrpg ever dark dawn will ever have a place in my heart as it struck a good balance. Not too easy you get board and not too hard that you give up. And no so long or grindy the story looses interest
I think this one i never played before, animation really holds up to now, judgment and catastrophe look awesome in 3D, iris looks even more like a planetary nuke XD. Battle music is catchy too.
I like that while the rest of the tier 4 pure element summons are calling upon some higher entity, entreating them to use their power, Meteor is literally just a mars adept (ostensibly) finding an immense source of heat in space and retreiving it
Back in my day, Nereid was a Japanese kimono-clad girl perched atop a turtle. But you know..... This one might be better, especially historically speaking.
I remember I couldn't share this experience with no one of my friends, even though I recommended it to them because the "lore was too long", but one of the best games, I had two files completed and one always available for any friends who would like to try
There was a comment once that said, Judgment was shown to do his job professional with knightly restraint and honor. Catastrophe is when he finally clocks out after a tiring day only to get mandatory overtime.
I'm glad that battles in this game take place inside a separate reality from Weyard, because some of these summons can really just end the world in a single blow and a rag-tag team of teenagers casually use them to kill a bat and some rats.
