    I was sold on a Crunch Lab until I found this video. The Evo just has more presence to it. I agree that the Crunch Lab is "heavier," and perhaps more suited for Petrucci's tone for that reason. The Evo sounds a little more vintage-80's, and probably why I like it more. Thanks for posting this.

      Keep in mind you could flip the Crunchlab with the bar towards the bridge for a more focused, tighter sound.

    I've got an Ibanez Rg1570 with Evos and a 2550 with Crunch Lab and Liquifire. All of them are great pups, but I prefer the latter ones since they have more punch. Personally, I feel they are better balanced too. Evos sound great, and they really cut through the mix, especially in huge stage live situations. Simply, I feel more comfortable with the Petrucci's set.

    Both are great pickups but the Evolution is pure fire! My favourite. The Crunch Lab was better at cleans (smoother clean sound, less aggressive) but that's a small thing in the light of pinch harmonic ease the Evo gives you. In some cases the scream-ier top end of the Evo is a little too much depending on what you're going for but overall it always shines. In split coil mode the Evo bridge is really twangy and snappy too. In the 2550 (basswood) both perform well but I must say that in high grade mahogany the Evo is awesome too.
    You played very well man! Especially your leadwork - it was great. Well done :)

  • @danasamana
    @danasamana 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks! This was very helpful! I guess I´ll go with the evolution. With the crunch lab everything sounds instantly like petrucci - this typical "nosy" sound. The evolution seems more neutral, because it seems to me that steve´s "sound" comes rather from his phrasing than the actual pick up. Ok, the tendency to enhance harmonics. Good. But that´s what I´m searching for.
    What I´d be still curious in is, how the evolution handles chord resolution when in high gain mode. Seemed a bit "washy".
    I like when every string rings out fine while playing high gain chords.
    Chugging seemed to be ok with the evolution.
    Dimarzio´s website says it´s high in mids and highs and rather low in the lows, which seems good for chuggung heavy chords on amps like the rectifier or a rockerverb.
    What is your impression on this?

    • @Robman275
      @Robman275 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Evo is excellent and massively underrated for rhythms. I've used it pretty much the whole 10 years I've played guitar and I'm all about rhythm and chord driven riffs. I play in a punk/metal band and it has been the only pickup that allows me to sound like me. The lows are tight but still full bodied, the mids are punchy, but not too thick or vocal and while it is very bright, it's bright in a presence sense, rather than a treble sense. Great string definition, even with high gain. I use a Marshall JCM900 with the distortion channel gain on 7, bass on 4, Mids on 8, Treble 7 and presence 7, with a MXR 10 band eq in front boosting the mids and treble, with the 3 low sliders untouched. I don't sound or play anything like Steve Vai, but as I said it's been the only one for me. Do bear in mind I use a 24" short-scale guitar with the pickup angled with the low side towards the neck, so naturally my sound will be warmer than say a 25.5" scale Ibanez, like the one in this video. Also, I've never tried the Crunch Lab, so I am very biased towards the Evo, but I swear by it for chugging chords and rhythms! Sorry if this is a bit long, just hope it helps :)

      Uyy super extraño que suenen así, deberías de revisar la electronica, puede que tenga algún cable suelto y por eso te suenan de ese modo, si no te arriesgas es mejor que la lleves de nuevo al lugar donde te cambiaron la pastilla y pidas revision .

    Crunch Lab sounds better on rhythm (chords or riffs), Evo sounds better on Lead.

    can you install the two (evolution and crunch lab) in one guitar at the same time?

    • @ibrahimbirdal
      @ibrahimbirdal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two pickups designed for bridge position it is not possible. If I install one of them on the neck it would be meaningless. I didn't get your point.

      It was a question but I think I made it wrong... My point was if the pickups can be installed in the same guitar, but you already gave me the answer because you said that both were made for the bridge position

      @ibrahimbirdal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Daniel Rodriguez Some pickups can be use both on bridge and neck for example dimarzio paf pro but if you install evolution bridge on neck it would be meaningless because there are evolution neck pickups. Don't miss the point you can't use every pickups in any position. you have to know pickups' specifications. Yes, no one can ignore you installing pickups on any position but you need to be logical.

      Even though there is an Evo neck version, there is no reason you can't use the bridge version in the neck position. Steve Vai's EVO Jem guitar is actually configured just that way.

      If you don't see a reason, no problem. if I put evo bridge on neck position and compare it with crunch lab on bridge position it would be meaningless. That's my point.
      Also I just ask from curiosity you say "Steve Vai's EVO Jem guitar is actually configured just that way." what is the source of this information. All jem guitars on Ibanez shops have evo bridge on bridge position evo neck on neck position. Why do you think Steve Vai used evo bridge on neck? You know this pickups are his signature why they didn't make one evolution pickup and use it in two position. Where this bridge and neck distinction comes from If Steve Vai uses bridge version on both position. It dosn't make sense.
