  • This video is the first of a new series: Star Wars Vintage Toys Restoration and Repairs. The first victim of my experiments is a yellowed snowtrooper. The treatment: Hydrogen peroxide and a lot of UV light! The plastic in Star Wars Kenner figures (as with many vintage toys) tends to get yellowed with time. This is due to a combination of bromide, a fire retardant substance that gets mixed in with the plastic, and thermal oxidation, or exposure to heat and oxygen. The process CAN be reverted, however. You just need hydrogen peroxide and UV light, a process commonly referred to as "retrobrighting". I used a home-made UV light chamber - you can make your own, see the link below. Alternative sources to LED strips are UV lamps and reptile UV lights.

    The yellowing gives them a mandalorian look.

    I've seen stuff like this done before but was always worried about the paint on items I'd want to try it on. Kinda shocked that the troopers paint looks to be totally unaffected.

      Yes, I was slightly worried but the Star Wars figures I had seen done were all unaffected - I think the quality of the paint is very good. I imagine some colours could be affected more than others. The only way to know which might is to... risk a figure, potentially. I know, for example, that some GI Joe colours fade. It depends on the manufacturer. My Little Pony, for example, is fine if done in Hong Kong. ut South-American ponies' paint fades.

    Hi, great video. I just wanted to let you know that you can use the Oxi Action to retrobrite too. In essence its baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip, James! I didn't know Oxi had hydrogen peroxide. I use it for cleaning the ponies, it works wonders -- but I never soak them for more than a couple of hours because it can damage the painted symbols or jewel eyes. Have you tried this, and if so, how long do you think the snowtrooper would have taken if done in oxi? Do you combine it with sun/UV light?

    • @jbeller2
      @jbeller2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroGeekCrafts Yes, I use been using this method for about a year now, I put the parts in the Oxi water and leave them in the sun for a few hours, depending upon how much yellowing it can be anything from 4 to 12 hours. I do live in the Middle East, so it gets quite hot and that reduces the time considerably. I have had no issues with Star Wars figures and vehicles, but depending on the paint applications, it mighty cause issues. I did the process on a vintage A-Wing about 6 months ago and I was concerned that the red paint would be damaged, so I only had it submerged for about 2 hours.

      @@jbeller2 That's actually great to know, as some people don't want or can't buy peroxide in their country. I live in the UK, so sun is not usually an option :) Thank you so much for letting me know, I'll give this a try in the summer!

    • @jbeller2

      @@RetroGeekCrafts I'm from the UK, so I know that the sun is rarely an option. It should in theory work with your UV box, but it might take longer.

      I think you can replace oxiclean with baking soda. You might have some of that, it's used for baking. I know they are similar although I haven't personally used beaking soda because I have a ginormous bucket of oxipowder :P

    Bromine aging?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bromine is a flame retardant used in toys, and it's the "ingredient" in the plastic that turns yellow with time and temperature ☺️

  • @leahrowden3939
    @leahrowden3939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish I could do retrobrighting too, but I don't like Star Wars, unfortunately.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are lots of other toys that can be retrobrightened if you want to give it a try. You can also do it with sunlight, you don't need UV lamps (I just don't have much sun where I live). Right now, I'm working on some power rangers and GI Joes. I want to try Polly Pocket too. If it's white and plastic, it probably yellows and can be made white again :)

    • @leahrowden3939
      @leahrowden3939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RetroGeek Crafts Thanks for the advice. But I might end up turning the doll's hair completely white. White plastics are fine, though. But I’m curious about how they can be turned from yellow back to white.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leahrowden3939 Yeah, the hair color can definitely change. When I do ponies I normally cover the hair with masking tape. It depends on the color, some are fine but most will get paler if exposed to UV.
