    I was surprised that many countries saw Korea's technological prowess lower than expected.
    Of course, I understand because I don't know about every country.
    Korea is one of the best semiconductor technology countries, the world's No. 1 secondary battery company, on a world-class level shipbuilder, electronics, machinery, and materials technology...
    It's a small country, but it has enough infrastructure to build an aircraft.
    Except for the engine of the KF-21 fighter jet, other small things were excluded, and advanced technologies such as AESA radar, EO-IR, and electronic combat systems were localized.
    And I left the internal armoured window empty, leaving a path to the fifth generation.
    And there is a stealth shape, but it also has stealth paint technology.
    South Korea is deliberately saying that the KF-21 performance is low to avoid U.S. sanctions. It also has electronic warfare technology. It has long been said that
    For your information, 20% of Indonesia is not a big money for Korea, but because of the need for export performance
    Even if Indonesia leaves, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Poland are waiting.

    Trillion Korean Won...which is not that much in dollars for a fighter jet project. I think Korea is more than ready to terminate the contract with Indonesia but they just don't want to be the first one to bring this up. Korea will just sit back and wait for that pending amount plus interests. All prototypes are in Korea and Indonesian engineers and pilots do not have access to these jets. By the way, an Indonesian engineer was caught with USB containing information on the program which he should not obtain or store. The investigation is currently ongoing..... put in dry words.
    1) Design the shape for a 5th gen fighter, with the help of LM(Lockheed Martin).
    2) Develop avionics indigenously. (integratiion of flight control, mission and weapons)
    3) Retreat to a 4++ gen version, leaving the expensive and unexperienced job of in-laying weapons and sensors, for the future.
    4) Use the 4++ version as a platform for further development such as EODAS.
    5) Position the 4++ version as the workhorse and for replacing aging F-4, F-5 and some of F-16s.
    6) Develop MUMT drones (high-end ISR drones) for manned-unmanned teaming with the 4++ version. KF-21 will be the first fighter which is NOT a 5th or higher gen and STILL performs MUMT.
    SK(South Korea) is good at sensors (AESA radar, EO and IR). The indigenous EO-IR satellite launched at the Vandenberg SF(Space Force) base in Dec. 2023 is doing the EO-IR job superbly. They say "the target was the top 5th country in terms of EO-IR satellite. But the real performance is much better already. We can improve 10% more." The indigenous SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite launched on April. 7th 2024 at Cape Canaveral SF base is also expected to be good. They say "it is one of the best in the world." SK is developing a SAR system for ISR drones with a resoltuion of 15 cm from 240 km. Currently SK's EO-IR drone (the MQ-9-like long endurance model. About 80 percent larger in terms of the body size. About 25 percent heavier with a 30 percent more powerful engine) can read the numbers on a fighter's stabilizer from about 100 km afar.
    Target indication by drones and satellites; missile firing by KF-21s flying below the enemy-radar fence and at the stand-off distance. This is the revolutionary thought by the US Air Force, which is being implemented by SK.
    7) Using this 4++ version as the platform, develop various kinds of extended range missiles with intelligent seekers, navigation and data link, for bunker busting, stationary ground targets, moving ground/maritime targets including ships, enemy radar suppression, any high-value targets for quick neutraliztion and medium/short range air2air. Some are subsonic; others supersonic(ram jet). The primary purpose of indigenous air-launched missiles are not for money or for national pride. They are for high-end drones. Weapons for drones are strictly forbidden for trade by Missile Technology Control Regime(MTCR). If SK does not develop indigenous ones, there will be only two choices left: give in to China or be totally dependent on the US Air Force. But the US is very reluctant to dispatch its highest-end assets in the peninsula. It is only natural from the US point of view: the US wants to have the safety buffer-play for escallation. And it is equally natural from SK's point of view NOT to fall into the fate of buffer or play.
    As long as the above points from 4 to 7 are met, the 4++ version makes more sense than the 5th or higer gen version, since the former is within the range of technology reach and much more affordable. Aftrer all, since SK is one of very few AUTHENTIC blood-bound allies of the US, sharing the existential interest in resiting the expansion of Chinese sphere of influence, the former operates the best-class weapons made by the US. Thanks to the alliance, SK can manage its pace and prioritize the weapons to be developed indigenously.
    The US can trust SK when it comes to handling China. Koreans have played a series of life-or-death identity games with the Continent for the last two thousand years (since Han Dynasty), whoever rules China. The modern world has made this from-ancient Korean game much more meaningful and colorful.

    7:20 South Korea (SK) needs the US (1) if SK does not develop nukes (which will take a year at most, and SK has all kinds of indigenous cruise missiles and ballistics for delivery) and (2)if SK does not want to fall into the sphere of influence of China.
    The US needs SK (1) if ithe US needs a country which has an existential interest in resisting China and which happens to be the next-door neighbor of China (it is only 1,000 km from Beijing to Seoul) and (2) if the US needs a country to arm very fast the South East Asian countries, East European countires and the Abraham Accord Arab countries, at a very reasonable cost with good quality NATO-compatible weapons.
    According to SIPRI (a renowned Swedish institute), in temrs of the ORDER for weapons, during the period of 2022~2023, SK ranked number 2 (just after the US) far exceeding France, Germany, Russia and UK. South Korea has developed a set of good non-nuke weapons because it has prepared for a total war for the last 70 years, considering the contingency of the intervention by China. In the Korean War, China sent 3 million soldiers.
    Another backgound for this 'crazy' arms industry is the fact that the US policy had been (up until several years ago): "Provide arms just enough to defend themselves against North Korea". The US did not want to be provocative toward China. The US has not sold SK Tomahawks, JASSMs, LRASMs, AARGM-ERs and so on. This policy is very similar to that for Taiwan. The only difference is the degree of limit.
    KF-21 is not for national pride. SK wants it to be the platform for most destructive air-launched missiles. A hub for high-end airborne drons for ISR and missile0carring, which are currently under development. A suite for Electronic Warfare against Chines anti-air radars, ships and fighters. Maybe SK is one of the few countries which fully understand the meaning of the military thought invented by the US: a networked multi-domain warfare. Now SK is developing a miniaturized, less costly version of the full set of weapons for this revolutionary thought.

      There are many misunderstandings that there would have been technical support from LM. LM forced the design of the F-16 base.
      So Korea had to develop a program for exterior design first. Thanks to that, we were able to develop an automated cutting and assembly system.
      This was introduced into FA-50 prior to mass production of KF-21, which lowered manufacturing time and cost.
      Rather, LM did not transfer the promised technology in exchange for the introduction of F-35.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GaegolMaster That isn't how it happened. I have spoken with the reps personally in Korea. KAI were the primary designers of the FA-50. They leveraged their long experience with building F-16s and paid for consulting from LM just to check their work and verify it.
      KAI also received 100% of the promised technology transfer to operate the F-35. Tech transfer is not an IP license however, it is simply access to the tech to operate and maintain it.
      KAI also requested IP licensing of F-35 technology and components and 90% of those requests were approved,. The other 10% were too sensitive to share with anyone. A 90% licensing was a huge time saver because only the remaining 10% required extensive research and development and many of the associated features would not be implemented until batch 3 anyways, sometime during the 2030s.
      The partnership between KAI and LM has been productive and amicable on both sides.

    The framework and design of the KF-21 began development in 2002 by ADD, an affiliated organization of the Korean government, and was released as the C-103 model in 2014, and this form is very similar to the current KF-21. Afterwards, additional development was transferred to KAI, a Korean military company, and advice from LM was obtained in the process of materialization through aerodynamic experiments and advice on more detailed design. The currently released version is Block1.4.5 generation. Block 2, which will be modified in the future, is expected to store four meteor rounds in the internal weapons bay, and IRIST will be buried. Block3 will be ready for its full 5th generation within about 10 years, and I understand that many of the technologies needed for this have currently been developed. However, the 5th generation version will be produced in small quantities. This is because KAI plans to immediately develop a 6th generation fighter based on this. In addition, Korea's Hanwha recently began developing a mid-range turbojet engine targeting 26,000 lbf by 2035, and Doosan also plans to begin engine development targeting this market. Upon completion of engine development, it is expected that domestic engines will be installed starting from Block 3. In addition, the developer expressed strong confidence in developing the KF-21N as a fighter for medium-sized aircraft carriers to be built by Korea.

    South Korea has been experiencing excessive power abuse by U.S. defense contractors. Over the past few decades, the korea industry has steadily accumulated defense technology as it progressed. Ironically, Russia, not the U.S. or its Western allies, has provided Korea with an opportunity to dramatically develop defense technology. As the Soviet Union collapsed in the past, Russia had to succeed to a loan that Korea had lent to the Soviet Union and pay its debts with various new Russian weapons. What surprised Korea at the time was that Russia sent Korea the latest tanks ,helicopter and rockets in the same way they were using them. They usually sent their high-tech equipment after they had been removed, but because the internal situation in Russia was confusing at the time, they sent all of them to Korea as they used it. So Korea acquired cutting-edge technology by disassembling and counter-engineering all of Russia's advanced weapons. And Korea began designing and manufacturing the first weapons that combined the advantages of American weapons with technology gained from Russian weapons. Lockheed Martin supported aircraft design when developing the T50, but exports of the T50 to foreign countries were limited by the U.S. and Western countries for that reason. As a result, KF21 succeeded in designing and developing its own version to escape U.S. interference. The last constraint is that the engines are made in the U.S., but Korea is developing its own engines to overcome them. Korea already has the capability to develop gas turbines for ships and is using them to develop engines that can fit in the KF21. Lockheed Martin has no stake in KF21.
    Historically, the attitudes of Koreans are clear past and present. If someone doesn't touch them, they won't invade their neighbor. But once someone invades them, they make the invaders pay the price. Koreans hate to invade, but they are making military preparations with the idea that once a neighbor counrty invades, they will all die with the enemy country

    thanks for your conern for KF-21 as a Korean.
    Compare to Korea's USD 45B national defense expenditures 2024, Indonesia's 20% is not for money. it's just only 1.3B.
    To successfully finish KF-21 project Korea thought economies of scale is essentessential. So Indonesia joined the project with 50 fighters export portion.
    simply protion of indonesia is a piece of cake. but getting on Korean nerves because of no honesty, genuineness, truthfulness and sincerity.
    Until now the project is on schedule without big problem. so some countries(they are already Korea military/commercial product users) focus on and want to join..
    KF-21 will replace old F-4 and F-5. not FA-50 and will upgrade internal weapon bay, ai mum-t, made in korea engine.
    it will support F-35 and F-15K just like middle role f-16.
    Someone said Lockheed Martin is fully involved partner KF-21project so they designed and tested together.
    that's absolutely wrong.. LM's acts as a project observer so there is no share ratio and any kind of rights.
    Except engine majer component parts AESA rader, IRST, EO-TGP, EW suits and Fight control system made in Korea.

      Part of the reason why Korea was able to develop Boramae so quickly was because they asked the USA for technology licensing and 90% of that was approved. Thus they only had to develop the remaining 10% from scratch. They were able to get permission to build local derivative components from the suppliers for the F-35.
      They also hastened the development process by setting achievable goals using existing resources and accepting a stealth level that is only equivalent to a beast mode F-35 with external weapons, skipping the internal bay and the expensive exotic materials and high maintenance of fully stealthy fighters. Since South Korea already operates the F-35 they didn’t need to recreate it. Instead they focused on a complementary aircraft with somewhat lower cost and lower maintenance to eventually replace all of their F-5 and F-16 and become the bulk of their fighter force.

      @@user-nl1we8mp2q Korea has done plenty of research towards the project but the resources used were small compared to the typical costs for a stealth fighter program. This was efficient use of resources and leveraging partnerships that allowed this cost and time savings. Certainly there are numerous components built in Korea.
      This is something to be proud of. Both for the accomplishments and for the wise and prudent use of good relationships with global partners.
      The AESA radar in particular was largely a project of the government Agency for Defense Development and Hanwha Systems. But they also did not shy away from getting help from Elta of Israel for hardware testing and Saab of Sweden for technical advice to LIG Nex1 on software.
      The aircraft was not developed in a vacuum isolated from the world but with the aid of partners and that doesn't take anything away from Korea's innovation and project management - on the contrary it adds to it by demonstration of professionalism and pragmatism. Where other projects got lost in nationalism, waste, and delays Korea quickly found a path to success.

    Not sure how supportive we’ve been with Turkey or what there access to stealth technology or knowledge prior to the KAAN development. But if the tech is there and they had it, With the support, lack of delays, it’s quite possible for them to pump out a 5th gen fighter. Now we don’t have the details on it or it’s combat capability I don’t think they have gotten that far. They still have quite a mountain to climb with testing and finalizing operational fighters. It does show with lack of bureaucracy, proper funding, and other lack of constraints that cool things can be produced under a limited timeframe. I’ll reference as an example the PBR boats of the Vietnam war. It’s no exactly similar too this but in short they took an existing chassis boat and modified it quite heavily and fitted new components too it. It pretty much was a brand new boat (almost), despite all that it was ready within a week. Pretty incredible stuff. I think will possibly see results in the future like the KAAN program with other countries. They don’t seem to have the political BS we have and they are smaller and with specific needs. Most countries looking for 5th gen have much smaller scale military’s with not as much money but alot more technological advantages compared to say 50 or even 20 years ago. Most these “5th gen” fighters like J20 and the Korean one (I forgot the name), and KAAN. Just like the Chinese ripping off American military tech, all these new jets look very similar to the F22. Granted that maybe how stealth tech works (not an expert) but it’s obvious all these guys studied already made stuff.

The US has 6 x B21 Raiders like the KF-21. NGAD fighter will be slow due to the Adaptive cycle engine development. Next, this is not a 5th gen. fighter. It's low observable, Gen. 4.5. It doesn't super cruise and definitely does not have internal storage for air to air missiles.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The point of external storage is to maximize available firepower because their primary threats are likely to send swarms of aircraft and drones in large numbers to try to overwhelm them in a short period of time. They need to take care of more targets than internal storage can service. With this in mind, the level of stealth only needs to be the maximum feasible with external storage, or in other words the equivalent to F-35 in beast mode. They also have F-35 but keep them in fully stealthy configuration. This way they can keep lower cost and lower maintenance Boramae as the more numerous portion of their force and keep their F-35 for use only in missions where that stealth is essential. It s F-16 equivalent firepower with stealth, sensors, and networking capabilities in between F-16 and F-35.

      It is intentional and with good reason. They face the huge numbers of China and Russia next door plus their main adversary of North Korea and cannot carry enough missiles internally to shoot down a large scale incoming force. But the primary adversary has mostly ancient aircraft that are overmatched even by existing F-16s. Thus they can expect to face huge numbers of targets but of lower capabilities. That places a greater priority on firepower than stealth. South Korea also has F-35s for those missions which require deep stealth with internal weapons. The reduced stealth requirements for Boramae reduces operational costs, speeds up development time, and reduces maintenance time for sustaining stealth capabilities. They complement the F-35 well as a team.

      They have space allocated for an internal bay and might get one in the future. But for now that internal volume can be used for other things such as extra fuel or electronics. Passing on it in batch 1 greatly reduced the development and testing time, allowing full production to begin in 2026. They also have a greater need for firepower than stealth in their particular situation and also have some fully stealthy fighters already. Thus unlike some other countries that don’t have access to the F-35, South Korea is in no hurry to develop an internal bay for their own fighter.

    The KAI KF-21 seems like a 4th Gen fighter that's just cosplaying at being a 5th Gen stealth fighter. The fact this aircraft looks like a stealth fighter, but needs to carry all its weapons externally, makes this aircraft no better than a Super Hornet, and maybe a bit worse since the F/A-18E/F was developed by a company with many decades of experience building combat aircraft. Lockheed Martin did help engineer the KF-21 Boramae, but Boeing/McDonnell-Douglas directly produces the Super Hornet.
    The Super Hornet costs $55.7 million, while estimates for the KF-21 range from $68 million to over $90 million each. The F-35A has reached a unit cost of Under $80 million, and the F-15EX is around $90 million making me wonder if Korea hasn't chosen to build a more expensive, and less capable aircraft than it could buy from the US.

    • @lifeextension9217
      @lifeextension9217 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Fighter aircraft are calculated based on program cost, parts and upgrade costs, and operational maintenance costs. The price per unit is meaningless.
      If you have a domestically produced fighter jet, you can develop air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-ship missiles, so the price of armament becomes cheaper.
      Therefore, all countries are doing their best to develop domestic fighter jets.
      Adding all this up, if you maintain one fighter for 10 years, it becomes ~ 3 times more than the unit cost.
      In other words, if you add everything up, the unit cost of the fighter is about 3 to 4 times the unit cost. Domestic products are half of the price here.

      @PlugInRides หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lifeextension9217 Interesting economics that I don't think necessarily check out, or fewer countries would be buying the F-16 and the JAS-39.
      Japan has insisted on co-producing the fighters it buys from the US, The Mitubishi F2 is basically a modified F-16, and the co-produced F-35A has a much higher unit cost than those sold to other partner countries.
      The problem with the KF-21 and TAI Haan, is small production numbers lead to much higher unit costs. This is the main reason the F-22 Raptor had such high costs, because the development costs were spread out over less than 190 aircraft. The long term maintenance/operating cost can also be very higher because spare parts are also being produced in small quantities. By comparison, the F-16 is so cost-effective because more than 4700 aircraft have been produced, and spare parts are plentiful. Also, upgrades and life extension programs are also profitable to develop since the market is so strong.

      It is a bit better than a Super Hornet. The components are largely derived from F-35 components under license. It is not meant to copy the F-35 though but to complement it with greater firepower, lower operating costs, and reduced maintenance. South Korea already has access to and operates the F-35 and are happy with it.
