@@rbrtck I wouldn't say that. Su-30SM is better than the Su-35s. All the Su-35s is is a Su-27SM. Both the Su-30SM and Su-27SM have pretty much the same general weapons, avionics, and even thrust vectoring. Only difference is the Su-30SM/MK is generally a more useful over all aircraft. Su-35s is literally just a stop gap aircraft in short. It isn't a new aircraft it's just a modernized Su-27. This is why the Su-35 is sometimes referred to as the Su-27M or Su-27SM because that is literally all it is. It would be like calling the Su-30SM/MK the Su-38s.
Basically similar to the Su-37 which was literally just like the Su-35 a prototype it was only ever given that higher number in it's name for news papers. But officially it was never called the Su-37. Both the Su-37 and 35 were part of the same Su-27M program and just test beds and their official names were T-10###. But they finally stuck with Su-35s because they had already announced the Su-37 was never going to be built. Basically every time they designed a new prototype modification for the Su-27M program they gave it a new number/name for the news papers and boy did western intelligence agencies go bonkers over them as well. But this was also during the same time period as the T95 scam/scandal a fake tank that never actually existed but was showed off at tank shows in Russia, and promoted in a way that worried western intelligence agencies. Issue is it never existed. Same goes for the Su-35 it never existed, it was just a Su-27M and the final version of the Su-27M the SM is the Su-35s.
Basically to sum it up. It's like calling a A-10B Thunderbolt II an A-15S Thunderbolt Squeeze. When all the A-10B is a is a modernized version of the A-10 to replace the A-10A. Again this is why some still call it the Su-27M because it literally looks 100% identical to a Su-27 to avoid confusion.

Counterarguments: Is stealth not more effective if there is additional 'noise' in the area? Granted, having 4th gen fighters in the area being 'loud' as possible may make it obvious that stealth aircraft is in the area, but, if the tactic keeps Ukrainians from targeting a SU-57, it might be worth it. Also, losing a SU-35 is less of a PR disaster than a losing a SU-57. It's not like Russia hasn't used sacrificial-pawns before.

    Vietnam War
The United States was using a new technology, air-to-air missiles, to shoot down enemy aircraft in the 1960s.
When the Vietnam War began in 1965, fighter aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II did not have weapons, it was believed that the aircraft's missiles would be sufficient.
But American aircraft equipped with missiles came face to face with the small and agile Soviet-made MiG aircraft as the war in Vietnam developed.
Some of North Vietnam's MiGs were nearly identical to the Soviet aircraft that fought on the Korean peninsula in the early 1950s. These were considered obsolete in the West, but could cause problems in close combat where American aircraft could not use their missiles.
Between 1965 and 1968, American aircraft still shot down more North Vietnamese aircraft than they lost, but the difference was rapidly decreasing.
Large, twin-engine American planes were fairly easy to spot from a distance; The small, single-engine MiGs were not.
One of the US solutions to this was an ambitious new design against the increasingly advanced Soviet aircraft.
U.S. defense officials were already alarmed in the late 1960s by the emergence of the Soviet MiG-25, a giant fighter jet capable of flying at three times the speed of sound.
To counter the MiG-25, the McDonnell-Douglas F-15 Eagle was designed to shoot down enemy aircraft at high altitude with radar-guided missiles.
However, Warsaw Pact allies such as the Soviet Union, Poland and East Germany fielded thousands more warplanes that would fly and fight at lower levels.

Maybe 'escort' wasn't quite the right word. Maybe it was a three aircraft attack mission, one SU-57 to do the attack, accompanied (very, very loosely) by two SU-35's possibly used as decoys while the SU-57 flew its stealthy attack part of the mission. In this case, except in other than in non-critical parts of the flying, the SU-35's were never near enough to record the SU-57 in the actual attack phase. Also, perhaps puts the SU-35's close enough that they can offer assistance to the SU-57 if it became necessary - for example, in the event that the SU-57 was somehow intercepted by Ukranian aircraft. But otherwise, why bother with the SU-35's?

The Su-57 was intended from the start as multirole, and at least I've never gotten the impression that air-to-ground was secondary to air-to-air for it. Air-to-ground has always been more emphasized for it than for the F-22, for example, which can do air-to-ground (and pretty well, too, especially when it flies fast, up to Mach 1.72 for dropping bombs), but it is a secondary role.

  • @JetDriver77

The SU-57 is a failed attempt at copying the F-22/YF-23 concept. Round exhausts, antennas, appendages and exposed rivets everywhere. Does it have a smaller cross-section than an SU-33? Maybe, but it's no F-22/F-35. It's also not just about what it looks like on the outside. I'm sure its systems integration with the rest of the battlespace is not up to our 5th gen standards.

Sometimes the tech is specifically designed to defeat other tech, so using the “obsolete” defense might even work better.
“Obsolete” listening stations used to detect aircraft before there was radar may come back against stealth - military jets are notoriously loud.

If any plane would have been shot down in this mission, it likely would have been one or both of the Su-35s since they have larger RCS. I'm sure the very last thing Russia would have wanted was to have a solo Su-57 flying into a combat zone, getting targeted and shot down. Su-57s, of course, are expensive. Getting one shot down would have been a black eye against Fuhrer Putin and his regime, would have been a blow to Russian morale (if it was let known to the public) and a hit to their pocket books.

For propaganda, so the Su-57 is too valuable to risk in an actual operation. Like the T-14 tank, it has to be kept far away in a bunker. Meanwhile, soon Ukraine will have F-16, Gripen and Mirage 2000.
