Hakeem's rings are up there too...esp the 95 one where they were the 6th seed and won the entire thing with no home court advantage

Dirk was one of my favorite players to watch growing up. He was a beast and his finals run was one of the greatest carry jobs in NBA history. It’s the closest thing to a “solo championship” that I’m aware of.
- Hakeem's 1st run was a solo star.
Random: The narrative for Dirk would have been a step below's Barkley -- if he had not won. Dirk's '06 loss to Wade was mostly (for me): Wade gettin' phantom calls but he was the aggressor and forced the refs to make bad balls. However, that '07 team was the real kicker b/c a #1 seed losing to #8 seed is bad -- but he faced his ex-coach in Nelson who spent several years coaching Dirk so he would be the one to know ALL Dirk's weaknesses.
I still like the 04 Pistons title win. Larry Brown led that team with brilliant defense with the leading Pistons scorer only averaging 17pts per game.
And no All-Stars. Just mostly cast-offs.
I was coming to make this same comment. Also, without that title Ben Wallace is only considered to be an undrafted player that was a pretty good defender and rebounder, not a hall of famer
Edit: it also did a lot for undrafted and offensively challenged players; Draymond Green is on record saying that growing up watching big Ben made him believe he could play in the NBA.
But they went to the finals again the very next year.

Yeah man, I remember back then, it was so hard being a Mavericks fan. But Dirk eventually came through. I made it to the parade. Proudly!
Dirk was in the realm of Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Elgin Baylor, Allen Iverson, etc..... not bad players in the least bit, but winning that ring - especially against that Heat team - changed his legacy dramatically. He really was seen as a great player who couldn't seal the deal before that point.

And Germany became world champion two years ago. I swear basketball is bigger than ever in Europe at the moment! All started with Rick Smits, Dirk, Parker, Sabonis, Gasol. And so many Baltic / Serbian players I am forgetting. We keep going forward guys, keep shooting hoops and help the next generation! I’m 39 in Netherlands and every week coaching the young kids!
Hakeem’s 2 rings, Jordan’s final ring, and the Greek freaks first ring come to mind when it comes to the impact it had on them when they won the titles, but no ring will matter more than dirks

@@jojomazzocchi8968 I would rate it higher than Lebron's Ring for a few reasons.
Despite their regular season record, I actually would not say that the 2016 Warriors were the greatest team ever. Jordan's bulls, Kobe and Shaq Lakers, Showtime Lakers, and even just the KD warriors the very next year were all better, even if their regular season records were not as good. I think also something else to note is that the Warriors played well together, but as far as star power goes it could be argued that the Cavs had the 2 best players on the court. Steph is really the only one you could consider a super star on the Warriors, and I don't think it's unreasonable to say that he is not as good as Kyrie.
In contrast the Heat arguably had the 2 best players on the court, and a 3rd superstar as well. The mavericks did not have any other stars other the Dirk. I would probably say if you were to mix the starting 5s of the 2011 mavs and the 2016 cavs, Dirk is the only mavs player who would be in the lineup. Meanwhile if you were to mix the starting 5s of the 2016 Warriors and 2011 Heat, you would have the all 3 of the Heat's big 3 in there, and probably just Steph and Draymond from the Warriors.
Essentially, if we weigh a ring on a team coming together to be greater than the sum of their parts, Dirk's mavs ring is probably the biggest example of that. In 2016, the warriors were the team who became greater than the sum of their parts, where as the cavs superstars managed to carry it through as one would expect from just looking at the rosters alone.
I also don't give bonus points for going down 3-1. Winning is fewer games is more impressive. Winning in 7 with the last game coming down to pretty much one shot (which Kyrie made not Lebron) is not a convincing win.

There's more to it. Dirk's ring also hurt LeBron's legacy. That put a tombstone to the comparison between LBJ and Jordan, as MJ is portrayed as a winner above anything else. Also, Kobe's 5th ring solidified him as one of the top players ever and helped him surpass Shaq's 4-ring resume. Thus he stepped out of Shaq's shadow in terms of accolades/chips.

There is no debate, because:
- needing to play on teams with players having far more All-Star appearances than any other so-called GOAT......yet results in a sub-.500 performance record in The Finals.
- the sheer hubris of self-proclaimed GOAT-ness after failing to learn anything from: '...not 2, not 3, not 4 not 5!!"

1. Jerry West - 1972 (No ring for the logo? Plus losing in so many finals without a win, legacy changing)
2. Dirk Nowitzki - 2011 (The video says it all)
3. Oscar Robertson - 1971 (Would be known as a great stat guy, that didn't know how to win)
4. Kobe Bryant - 2010 (Mentioned in the video)
5. Wilt Chamberlain - 1967 (Was at that time period considered the NBA g.o.a.t.
But was also thought as selfish and unable to win, the finals and by extension the season kind of changes that)

The same could be said about Dr. J, he only won one championship late in his career, but it was a stacked Sixers team. I’m not sure what criticism Julius Erving got in the 1970s or early 80s though, without a title he would be a legend because we have more footage of him than Elgin Baylor or Oscar Robertson, but Dr. J would be barely be above them without a title.

Dr. J won 2 titles in the ABA then had to contend with the mighty Celtics in the 80s in the NBA. His legacy wasn't in any serious jeopardy.

Another great video. I feel like Jerry West and Oscar Robinson's solo championship's meant more. Jerry was always losing to Boston, then Wilt came along. Oscar was on subpar teams until Lew Alcinder (at that time) joined him. But you made a great case for Dirk.
Jerry West craps on that championship ring. It wasn’t even against Boston. I believe it was against the Knicks.
I’m sure it haunts him that he never beat Boston in the finals.
And Willis Reed didn't play in the '72 finals for the Knicks because of injury.

Johnny I would say, that the Dallas Mavericks championship win with Dirk nowitzki,Jason Terry, and Jason Kidd, is arguably the most impressive championship because of the teams they beat. They beat really tough teams in the Western conference and then they beat the super team in the Miami heat.but I would say it's not the most important championship. When we say most important it's probably the most important one for Dirk nowitzki's legacy as you mentioned in your video, because as you said in your video, if Dirk nowitzki doesn't win this championship he would be considered a great player that didn't fulfill his potential. The fact that he won this put him as one of the best players to ever play the game. By the way long time no speak great video!
To this day I still wonder out loud on why the Miami Heat lost was the biggest upset on the championship run when the biggest upset and shock was how the Mavericks swept a current back to back 2 times champion gunning for a 3 peat, was in the last 3 NBA finals and finished in the top spot in the West (in championship form).

Jason Kidd,Jason Terry and a bunch of role players that played defense and were able to shoot three pointers at a high percentage.
@@dannybecker8639 yeah it was a 4-0 sweep and things got ugly in the 4th game leading to 2 ejections for the lakers. TH-cam the Andrew Bynum violent foul on JJ Beria when the Mavericks were blowing the lakers 100 to 68 in the close out game 4.
Kidd is the one that gets massively underrated from this playoff run. He's a top 5 PG of All Time, and even if he wasn't in his prime, you can't just act like he's just another role player. His fingerprints were all over that team on both offense and defense. Scoring was never what really made him special, and you can't fully account for what it means having that IQ on the floor for 35 minutes per game. Kidd was 9× All Defensive Team, which is tied for the most amongst PGs, and 2nd most amongst all Guards. And even at 38 years old Kidd led all players in the 2011 Playoffs in Assists, Steals, and Three-Pointers made. Kidd finished his career with a +3 winning record against LeBron.

Completely agree with this analysis. I ditched the NBA in the 2000s, briefly enjoying it again after I started to appreciate just how good Kobe was, mainly after I understood just how tenacious his work ethic was! But because of this absence, I had no idea that Dirk was a choker. I only knew him as a champion, the best Maverick in history and the guy that took down Miami. So, yes! Definitely the most important single ring to a superstar's career!
Dirk wasn't a choker. The guy making this video ignored a big part of Dirk's career and cherry picked a couple of bad series. Dirk would have won in 06 if not for blatant referee/league bias towards Miami. Could have won in 03 too if not for injuries.

@@simtelefon Dirk was in fact one of the most consistent playoff scorers ever. His drop off in efficiency is top 10 all time while also increasing his volume. In that regard he was better than Bird who had far more terrible scoring series than Dirk despite his much shorter career.
1 context you didn’t mention on 2007 lost to GSW. The coach for GSW was Don Nelson, the coach who developed him and got them to play with a stretch 4 which seems normal for today. But that was revolutionary and often criticized at the time.
And GSW won (possibly swept) the regular season series.
So for many reasons a "bad matchup".
Many a "Charlotte Hornets" finished 8th in the East... with losing records.
8th in the West likely has 47 wins.... OKC/NO missed the Playoffs with at least 45 wins

Dirk won because his team was better. He was great in the clutch, and was their MVP by far, but he also had the best squad that year.

@Disgruntled Simp Mod KD is not even top 10 currently in the NBA. He played horrible in this year's playoffs, look at the efficiency numbers. Jimmy Butler was the best player in the series with both numbers and the eye test when he played the Celtics, and took them to 7. KD was not the best player in that series in any regard, and he got swept. I used Jimmy as an example but the consensus is Giannis, and it has been for a while now.

KD is only elite at overall scoring and shooting, which is hindered by his complete inability to move off ball(which we witnessed in the Celtics series), while he is good at everything else he doesn't have any other thing he's elite at. Meanwhile Giannis is an elite defender, transition scorer, finisher, overall scorer, and rebounder, while also being a better passer than KD. He also plays for the better team, and he might be in the finals right now if Middleton didn't get injured. At this point there is no argument whatsoever for KD being over Giannis. The fact that the dumbasses in the NBA TV media can't realize it isn't my fault, especially when so much of the NBA fanbase agrees with me.

Not just for his legacy but for the NBA in general. It proved you don't need a single super star teammate to win a ring. In fact I would argue by Dirk winning in 2011 it has made a lot of other players legacies look way worse. Oh you "didn't have good teammates"? Not a valid excuse anymore. Mavs went through prime Kobe, KD, Lebron and DWade.

Marion had noticably declined form his Suns days and was inconsitent on offense, not an all star anymore. Stojakovic? Seriously? Outside of the Lakers series he was nothing but a huge liabilty on defense and reitred right after he got his ring. Chandler was a journeyman who was so injury prone that no team wanted to keep him, he had played on 5 different years the 5 years prior to his stint with the Mavs. Barrea? What? Sparkplug form the bench, nothing more. Terry was a streaky scorer but not a good defender or passer/playmaker. Way to overrated the team. The only thing they had going for was Dirk, experience and patience. They were the oldest team in the league and it showed.

The 2020 ring is not an easy ring, it's the one of the hardest ever. The pandemic had people all over the world scared to death, there were no vaccines yet, and then these pros had to play basketbal at the highest level. The mental strength to be able to do this and succeed is off the charts.

Dirk never played with another hall of famer in his prime. Every other all time great won chips with another hall of famer in their prime but Dirk was never given that other player to be his robin. Lebron, Jordan, Kobe, Duncan, Durant, curry, magic, bird, you can keep going on and on. Dirk s an all time great, being in Dallas made him underrated.
You forget Hakeem Olajuwon? In ‘94 he carried his the load for his team and had NO all star teammate. Just role players. Olajuwon also lead his team in all statistical category even steals & assists in the playoffs. No doubt what Dirk was great too. That’s why they both are so awesome… yet highly undervalued.

One thing ovelooked about that dallas team is that, even when they had the second best record in the west overall behind the spurs, they were put in a lower classification spot becase they also were 2nd in the south-west division, making most of their first round playing against a tough team

I would say Hakeem's back to back rings are equally important. Those rings solidified him as the top 10 player of all time for pretty much forever.

With the 95 Rockets being the lowest seeded team to win the title at 6th. And all 4 of their opponents they beat having 55 wins or more. 2 of them had 60 (Jazz and Spurs).
As a MMFL, I am a bit biased, but I agree. Dirk's run in 2011 was a sight to behold. He was a machine. And Dallas will always love him for it.

Lebron, Wade and Bosh, Kobe and Pau and young KD, Westbrook and Harden. Plus Hakeem was a great player and great performer in Playoffs before 94 , he even beat Kareem,Magic and Worthy in 86 (same team than won in85,87 and 88). On the other hand Dirk usually choked Playoffs

I think Dirks ring is by far the most impressive. He wasn’t in his prime, he had no other all-stars, DAL beat LAL (swept), OKC (KD and Russ) and POR. They were 3rd in the West and wasn’t favorited at all. Then they beat the big 3 Heat (LBJ, Wade, and Bosh). Dirk beat Kobe, Gasol, KD, Russ, Dame, Wade, LBJ, and Bosh in 1 playoff run.
Dirk’s ring is probably equal to Olajuwon’s ring(s). Olajuwon didn’t have an all star teammate in ‘94 in his first championship. In ‘95 Olajuwon and Rockets was a 6th seed yet still won, sweeping Shaq’s Magic. He beat great teams equal to what Dirk faced.

Although I can't stand Lebron...I say Lebron's over GS is the biggest because it allowed people to have an excuse to place him near Jordan. That ONE ring allowed him to be considered the greatest while no one says that Dirk is the greatest.

I still think it's Lebron's 2016 championship. The entire narrative of him leaving Cleveland and coming back and having to take down a Warriors juggernaut all while coming back from a 3-1 legacy put him in GOAT 🐐 conversations. Jordan himself agreed to The Last Dance doc the same night Lebron clinched the 2016 chip. Not a coincidence imo.

The 1983 76ers Ring was massive for Dr. J and Moses Malone. 1971 Bucks Ring for Oscar Robertson. Other Rings were huge at the time but a second Ring that followed shortly after make it less big in retrospect (like Isiah Thomas and the ‘89 Pistons, who repeated in ‘90, Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets winning in ‘94 and then repeating in ‘95, David Robinson’s Spurs winning in ‘99 and then retiring after another Ring in 2003, or Kawhi Leonard’s Raptors Ring in 2019 being so huge even though he’d already been a champion and Finals MVP with the Spurs in 2014).

It was only after the ‘06 season when they keep losing in the first round except ‘09(they beat the suprs R1). Before the “playoff disappointments” dirk led his mavs to second round and conference finals, he never had a losing season to get picks. He just hasn’t had an all star caliber team mate to pair him. his only ring truly cemented his legacy as an all time great. Not even KD so far can match what dirk accomplished.
And Dirk was a monster after 2007. He was consistently great putting up fantastic stats but his team just was not good enough. In fact stat wise 2011 was not even his most impressive year.
In general the teams that won rings during the 2000s is one of the greatest and most impactful rings we were ever see.
Kobe in 09 and 10, Wade in 06, shaq and Kobe in 0-2, Tim in 03, bill and Ben in 04. Amazing rings that to this day are underrated
Eh, Wade's ring in 06 has a massive asterisk next to it. Tim Donaghy, a ref famous for cheating, has gone on record saying the series was rigged for the Heat. He says it was done to teach Cuban a lesson due to Cuban butting heads with David Stern and other higher ups in the NBA numerous times. Looking at the games and rewatching the series, it's easy to see how that could be the case.
Wade averaged 21 points from free throws ALONE that series. I remember being so pissed watching him drive to the basket because you knew it was a whistle the vast majority of the time for no foul.

I think Bill Waltons ring with the Blazers is legacy defining and why he was able to sneak on to the league's 75 greatest club. Make no mistake, his legacy was defined by injury. Although he makes the HOF easy on his extraordinary college run, he had only his 85 game uninjured streak that he was finals MVP, league MVP, on a 70--15 record, another ring in Boston and 6th man of the year to make his claim.

But after beating the two-time defending champions, multiple stars in each round, and setting NBA records, Dirk found his way into the Finals, where he led the charge for a 15-point comeback in the 4th to tie the series, then played with a 102 degree fever in a Game 4 that had the season on the line and tied the series again and just running with it from there.
