Yeah, I got that impression from the Trailers as well... The thing is... That would have made it an actual Movie!
If they were going to do it.. Go the whole way, Get Joker Out of Arkham, Let him slowly begin the madness once more with Harley in tow...
However, I am standing with @The-king-of-ruins ... This Movie did NOT need a Sequel! The Ambiguity of the OG film makes it PERFECT! Is it The Joker or just "Joker"? Is Arthur Fleck the man who becomes the Iconic Prince of Crime or just someone who wishes he was? It fits PERFECTLY that way!
I wish to god they could do a Batman Film Series with the SAME BATMAN for long enough to have the eponymous "There were THREE Jokers" ... Hide Joker so you never see him fully, even though you know that there will be Three Different Actors and ROLL WITH IT! It works, It makes Sense and then you can have audience's even guessing WHO was the Original? Was there an Original? Does Arthur Fleck even fit in? Did he Inspire them? Or is he just a Fantasist?
JOKER should have remained a Stand Alone Movie!

The biggest problem of the main character becoming completely reactionary is that the whole point of The Joker was him being invisible and on his own. It was him vs the world, which turned him into a nihilistic anarchist. This only fed his psychosis which finally made him visible to the people around him. And even though the end result wasn't great, this was still preferable to being an invisible person nobody cared about. It was better to be hated than to be ignored. Now, him suddenly starting to pull back again and refusing to make any real decisions makes absolutely no sense. He's literally trying to become invisible again, which means that this alter ego of The Joker that he created after burning off his old personality is suddenly gone as well. For a movie that leans so heavily on its predecessor it does an amazing job at erasing everything it stood for.

@@gabrielmeth4844 I 100% agree with you. The Hollywood woke machine got to them and shamed them over the "message" of the first one, so this movie was basically a big apology for the first movie, basically saying a guy like Fleck is a loser and pathetic. It made the movie unwatchable because the politics of it overwrote the entire point of the first movie, intentionally.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

You're 1/3 right. For me, one of the sequel's biggest problems is just how imperfect the first movie was. I know that there's fans of the first, and while the 2019 movie had its pros, I can’t ignore its flaws. As giving Arthur Fleck/Joker a reason to be Joker, is both the movie's strength, but also its weakness.
You see, while a majority of Batman/Gotham lore goes into great detail about the pathologies of his rogue’s gallery of villains, explaining what made them resort to their messed-up actions, with Joker's case, what makes him work is that he DOESN'T really have a pathology, let alone is suppose to have one.
Sure, he has certain traits such as his obsession with circuses/comedy, his sadistic sense of humor, and his distaste for people not understanding what he's doing (“It’s part of the joke!”). But why Joker is a psychopathic clown is never really explained or really even hinted at, even in The Killing Joke, which Joker (2019) was inspired by, but this was THE WHOLE POINT. He was written as less of a fleshed out character and more of a manifestation of evil itself. A good example of someone like this too, is Judge Holden (Blood Meridian). Someone who's beyond logic or explanation, not a puzzle that can be solved. He just is who he is. Batman literally calls him out for this when he makes his argument about “One Bad Day”.
Therefore, adding in so much sympathy to the character, strips from him this disturbing ambiguity, contradicting the entire essence of his character.
It doesn’t even help to that the Director stated how he was inspired by a similar movie The King of Comedy. But those who have seen that movie would actually understand the fact that the main character, Rupert isn’t really all that sympathetic. Sure he has a plan and motivation, which may be some can be empathetic about. The dude is narcissistic, disturbed, and kind of psychotic with the way he’s going about what he’s doing. As well as the fact that the people who comes across him, call him out for his dishonesty, with him claiming to the contrary, which leads for us the audience to wonder whether or not he’s even telling the truth or not. Just like most unreliable narrators.
So to see the sequel, try to downplay all this, instead of trying to find a way to work around it to actually make sure that we see that Arthur is 100% in the wrong of his actions, but is already far gone, really feels like the reason the sequel shouldn’t have existed in the first place.

Did you ever see the woman talk about her "joker theme" like it's some work of genius inspiration? it's a musical piece of single notes spaced out so far they almost stop being a song, any beginner cello player can play it. But it inspired joker's...dancing. I've mentioned this before, but the most common fan pitch for a Joker 2, if _you must make one_ is to have Harleen Quinzel already be Joker's psychologist in Arkham for a while now in act one of the movie, become fascinated with him turning into Harley Quinn, and uses his followers to break Arthur out of Arkham.
Then have another Gotham criminal (the "Imposter Joker", the Riddler, or someone else) threaten Joker as the true madman of the city, forcing Arthur to step up as a leader to "protect his new family" and become the better villain out of both necessity and a feeling of belonging, which forces him to also do more violence.
This leads to the third act of Arthur finally gaining confidence as The Joker persona, leaving Arthur behind forever, and having a whole legion of criminals following him behind as the top criminal of the city, as we see a 17 year old Bruce Wayne training in Asia and watching Gotham crumble on television, as he prepares to become the Batman.
I like this fan idea better than the actual movie we got.

Arthur wasn't supposed to be pathetic. He was supposed to be a sympathetic villainous protagonist who's actions are made understandable but not justified because of the life he live. Joker was supposed to make you feel sad and compassionate for a man who was screwed from the get-go by a mental disorder, an abusive mother who constantly gas-lit him, a job that treated him unfairly, and an existence that viewed him as insignificant and disposable. Although Arthur Fleck's actions were unacceptable on a personal level they represented people like him beginning to resist the abuses foisted on them by the rich and the powerful. He didn't kill Thomas Wayne personally but the image of a man preferring to laugh at the ashes of a system that ruined him than live under it certainly did. In Joker he is hard to look at because he is a twisted reflection of the failures of our values as a society and how they make monsters out of the abandoned and the desperate. In Joker 2 he is just hard to look at.
Joker two holds the people who enjoyed the first one and related to the feelings of dissatisfaction with society expressed in it in direct contempt. Part two hates part one and anyone who liked it.

The moral of the 1st movie was that no people are made out of steel, if many layers of neglection stack on top of mentally ill individual, they might be hurt immensely. The main hero of the movie snaps just because of this.
The moral of the 2nd movie? Society neglects individuals who needs the help the most? SIKE! HE DIDN'T NEED ANY CARE ALL ALONG! IT'S ALL HIS FAULT, HE IS A FILTHY MURDERER AND MUST BE ABUSED FURTHER AND DIE. Did you feel bad for him in the first movie? What a silly goose you are, you did not get the point of it then, you were never meant to have sympathy towards MC all along! People nowadays...
I mean, what the actual f? It's not just undoing the hero as critics say. It's also undoing the ideas and moral values this hero represents. And undoing the idea that society should support people like Arthur instead of neglecting them?.. Todd, for real?

But when in first movie Ripley jettisons the alien there is whole nervous sequences as she is strapping herself while wearing a space suit so she wouldn't be sucked into the space with the alien. Alien 2 had literally same premise in the ending outside of few details, she was not wearing any protective gear and was holding ladder bare hands to avoid being sucked into void.
Alien 2 was fine action piece but in didn't felt like a sequel, rather like a spin-off on the concept and it was breaking expectations established previously in the franchise.

It took a while but I got some of the messages
    - Obviously Arthur isn’t the mastermind like the other Jokers we are used to (and love)
-Harley represents the audience who sympathized with Arthur in the first film.
The beginning of the sequel shows Arthur already beaten.
What happened between his arrest, court sentencing, and his first entering Arkum?
There is a huge gap here.
If the sequel was done differently like Arthur’s slow transformation from Joker back to accepting (thru therapy) his responsibilities of his actions, that would explain a lot: killing his mother for lying about who his father is, felt bullied/overlooked by society, seeing his idol Murray Franklin make fun of him, etc.
It would be nice to have an end scene of him behind bars in Arkum.
And there would be an inmate praising him thru a wall next to him that would later be the new actual Joker.
That in my opinion would be better than is terrible sequel.
    Please…stop singing!

I think these movies are great pieces of art that told a complex story about a man who was betrayed by everyone in his life and how the human mind will sometimes give you what you need even if that it's not all real. Every human being can be pushed to brink and outside forces can push a man over the edge. The outside forces displayed in these movies are the same ones we are all dealing with in our world. I never was a comic book reader but what Todd Phillips did with these movies are absolutely brilliant and I look forward to his future works of art.

All they had to do was to make a Harley Quin movie about her slow descent into madness (under the influence of the Joker) similar to the first movie. The ending could be Harley (as the psychiatrist working at Arkham) helping Joker escape the asylum and finally coming into being as Joker and Harley recking havoc in Gotham with a 2-sec snippet of Batman at the very end (watching the chaos unfold down below the building his standing on) Something simple but engaging like that. People love the psychological derangement of characters and have always found Joker and Harley's toxic relationship interesting. That would have been enough. You could further develop Arthur as he curates his persona as the manipulative and calculative Joker will all know and love. There was no need to downgrade him, assault him and replace him as the Joker with some random dude at the end. That was such a terrible idea. I loved the first movie bc it gave Joker such a cool origin story that no other villain had gotten before. Why deprive him of that?

Then he could've realized that he doesn't even like his stans (as he did in the movie), gets betrayed/abandoned by Harley, gets killed by a disappointed stan just for him to adopt the crazier version of this persona... It's all there, just the focus was off

@OlafavonGoeding sure the execution could have been a lot better but I still think scrapping the first movies origin story for the joker isn't an exciting idea. It's not like the new guy is going to be fleshed out and that too in any meaningful way. Tho i do like your idea but maybe instead of actually dying in the end, he could be chased down and thrown in the acid tank. The stans could think his dead but right at the end we see bubbles arise from the tank indicating that Arthur did survive and now would transform completely into the original joker we all know and love.

It could also have worked with him dying at the end, just not like this.
Something like he escapes, gathers followers but then gets shot on stage by someone trying to stop him or his fangirl or whatever. As Arthur is bleeding out he starts to laugh which in turn makes his killer laugh and the entire audience starts laughing. Arthur has a wide grin on his face as he dies and at that point you do a callback to how his mother always said he was supposed to make people laugh.

This movie was advertised as a musical. So guys like me who love musicals, were expecting this to actually be a musical. But I was lied to.
THIS IS NOT A MUSICAL. It's a movie where at certain points, the movie just stops, the actors sing/dance, and then the movie starts again. And the songs aren’t even good.
In actual musicals, the music is there to enhance the story. The songs are actually necessary in musicals. Not only do songs progress the story in musicals, they make the story more memorable because catchy tunes tend to get stuck in your head. If you took away the songs in this movie, the already confusing story wouldn't change at all. Not even Lady Gaga, one of the most talented singers of this generation could’ve saved this poor excuse for a musical.

I have never seen a comic book movie so ashamed to be a comic book movie, a musical so ashamed to be a musical, a film so ashamed of its protagonist like this. It undid everything remotely interesting about its predecessor. This is as cowardly as sequels get.
Putting aside corporate blunders like refusing test screenings, Todd Philips saying the idea for this movie came to him in a dream is some genuinely unheard of shit. And the box office bomb following the cultural reset of the first film make all failures even more catastrophic.

      @lubue5795 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

@@TheSuperappelflap The thing is, dreams are really not good at writing scripts because dreams manipulate your emotions, thinking and memories in ways you could never manipulate your audience. In a dream, you can feel things, know things and expect things without any logic or reason to it which simply doesn't work for movies. So for a dream to be a good movie, you need to capture what makes that dream awesome and build a believable and interesting story around it.
Take your dream as an example. What you describe would be a fun scene but the issues is what are the circumstances that lead up to that scene? Why would you, probably some average guy, be so important during a zombie apocalypse that the military would rather chase you than protect the civilians? What is that thing you have to get? Why is it important and why is it at your parents home? Why even is there a zombie infestation?
If you can answer those questions and tie the answers together to form a cohesive story, you might be looking at a good film. However, if you cannot then the movie will be another of those bad zombie movies with shitty story and terrible writing.
And the issue with Joker 2 is that it precisely didn't manage that. The idea of having a court scene or a interview with the Joker is not bad, as it would give you a lot of interesting glimpses into who he is and why he does what he does. I mean, the heath ledgers Joker is so iconic because he has some really unique takes and the first Joker movie also pulled the "joker in an interview" off in a very succesfully way.
The issue in Joker 2, is the story they built around the ideas.

@lubue5795 the thing to be got is just some valuable stuff that means a lot to the family, can be anything, as long as its believable someone would risk their life for it.
Maybe the main characters house and belongings get blown up or overran by zombies and he needs to get to the family jewelry or antiques to trade them for food. Easy to make something up. The zombies are there because of whatever, virus, genetic engineering, portal from another world, doesn't matter much either what specifically.
the military sets up an exclusion zone and shoots potentially infected civilians and wants to contain things until they get the politicians to agree to nuke their own country, in the meantime they shoot at anything in range that moves, there ya go. Simple movie without magical mcguffins, with an emotional hook, plenty of action, doesn't try to insult the audience.

Even if they wanted to continue on this "Arthur is pathetic" insult to the audience path, the film could still have turned out far better than it did.
Studios are really quite pathetic in that they dream up fantasies of taking advantage of the hype from projects that are now too old for the hype to be that fantastic and making another billion dollars. It used to be that studios would throw together sequels so fast that the original was barely forgotten before the sequel was released. Now, it takes them long enough that the world has long moved on from the original as a discussion source.
