    I'm so inspired! I bought your mitten pattern and made 2 pairs of mittens from my Mom's cashmere sweaters. I know not preferred material for mittens but these are for my sisters in memory of our mom. The mittens came out great!!!! I am totally hooked.
    Thank you so much!

    I saw your bin of cuffs in the video. Do you sometimes use cuffs from an acrylic blend sweater as a cuff for felted wool mittens?

    • @JanHowell

      Yes, I have before. They work well.

    You can also boil wool in a pan of boiling water with a few drops of dish soap

    Great ideas but I can't wear wool at all, allergic, is there any other kind of sweater I could use?

    do you line your felted mittens so the wind doesn't blow through? I really like your ideas. Thanks!

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. They are lined with fleece or cashmere sweaters.

    You’ve inspired me to try using sweaters in my up cycling projects! I currently use silk ties and denim jeans for my crafts.

    Hi, was wondering if you could tell me why my bobbin is not getting tight when I wind it? Thank you.

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like when you are loading the bobbin the thread is not going through the tension guide. Does your machine have a manual? You can go online and for your machine model, google how to wind bobbin for your machine. Try making sure the the thread is going through a tension that is between your spool of thread and the bobbin. Let me know if that helps.

    Hi Jan!! I bought your mitten pattern and some wool sweaters. For Christmas, I made my family mittens and they loved them. I am now in the process of making more to sell next winter. I decided to use lavender oil and cotton balls to add to the stored sweaters. My question is, how many cotton balls should be used? I know it depends on the size of the container, but is just a few OK or add several? Thanks for doing your videos!! I have learned a lot from them. Happy New Year!

      2-3 should be antiquate.

    Hello Jan, Can you please explain how to treat a boiled wool jacket? Is it a good material to use? Would I still felt/shrink it further or not? It will need cleaning anyway, if not felting, would I dry clean it? How would you handle it? Thank you

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not ever cleaned boiled wool, but I found this link you may find helpful.

    Jan -- I thrifted a 100% cashmere hot pink sweater with an Escada label - it has barely shrunk if at all - so it's a fake right? lol Can I still use it?

      My question too. Hot water and dryer, and about 10 percent shrinkage. Use that way?

    I just tried felting for the first time. The sweater contained 80% merino wool/20% nylon. The sweater pattern had small holes throughout the sweater and after coming out of the washer, the holes remain. Would you suggest closing them using needle and thread from inside before cutting it up to use? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you could do that.

    Hi Jan; Do you ever use wool skirts, pants & jackets? Would you hot wash those thinner types of wool before cutting? Love your video & ideas

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sherrie. Yes I do use wool clothing and I wash all wool before making projects. That way you'll know how much it's going to shrink and how much fabric you have to work with. Wool skirts are great to use. However, if you're making a project like slippers or mittens that need a little stretch to them, a wool skirt or pant would not be a good fit. Let me know if you have further questions. Enjoy your day!

    I like this tutorial a lot but one thing I don't do is cut my sleeves all the way down in case I want to use the cuffs for mittens, which I often do.
    Thank you also for the essential oil tip. I would never have thought to use those and even though I've never had a pest issue, they'll smell great when I go to use them!!
    Edit: wrote my original comment halfway through your video then I came to the part where you have a bin of cuffs. LOL!!
