Something to keep in mind is it's called Mouthwashing, not Mouthwash. The title might as well be called "Put soap in your mouth". However, the mouthwash's literal and figurative anti-septic usage is put into question when Jimmy wastes the only bottle of rubbing alcohol, and is later forced to use mouthwash as an ineffective disinfectant on Daisuke. Mouthwashing then can almost be seen as an ineffective self-cleansing (of one manic's sins).
@@grey-spark that last part is actually the second reason I believe it's called Mouthwashing, which will be talked about more in the full release video!
@@AsukkaTV Let me put it this way... losing his career... that pregancy... it all put a bad taste in Jimmy's mouth. Crashing that ship was his attempt at mouthwashing. And when Jimmy pieced together that misarable attempt at redemption that was mouthwashing too.
I always thought it was called mouthwashing because Jimmy trying to get the bad taste out of his mouth. But at a certain point in the game (i would say around the time Diasukes dies) he cant really make an excuse for what he does. And then it finally hits him. The fact that almost every bad thing that happens in the game happens because of him. Then we reach the "guilt" section he faces each if his sins and feels horrible about it. But then he reaches the Anya section and he still doesnt feel bad about what he did to her, he still has to deflect the blame. He was just keep trying to "fix" things. So he doubles down and puts Curly in the cryo pod and makes him suffer for 20 more years. He cant be a bad person if he saves his only friend. (This was written in the middle of a Spanish class after a test i definitely failed)
Not to mention the mouthwash doesnt have any usefulness as a mouthwash period. Rather than actually try to clean your mouth with a toothbrush, which you can control and you have intention on where you're brushing, mouthwash is mindless and really is only there to make your breath smell good. It doesn't actually wash your mouth, the same way Jimmy's actions aren't fixing anything. It takes effort to take responsibility.
You mention that film making doesn’t give anything necessary to society. I’d argue that is wrong, and I think deep down you know that is untrue as well. Maybe it doesn’t physically feed me or clothe me, sure. But you’ve never had a day where you felt it was impossible to move forward or you didn’t see the point and a piece of great art got you through and past those feelings? Great art has saved my life many times and I know it will continue doing so. I’m in a really hard lab science program and I know art is what keeps my flame going. More than anything else. Film. Books. Paintings. All of it and more. I need it all for beyond the physical, to keep my physical, if that makes sense. I hope this helps. I’m sure you’ve helped more people than you know.
@niiroki9729 I actually had this discussion with a friend in response to this video, and they pointed out while the body itself doesn't need art, the soul does. The Mind. It's definitely giving me a lot to think about, so thank you for this comment!
I disagree with your very definition of intrinsic value. Intrinsic value isn't the same irreplaceable. We all have intrinsic even if there are 8billion other who could theoretically replace us because we fundementally still bring something. A pear might replace an apple at the end of dinner but the apple still has intrinsic value due to its undeniable nutritional value.
@@AsukkaTV yeah no problem. Great video otherwise. I think your point is still there even if you are talking about intrinsic value. There is still the idea of subjective self worth we have in comparision to the greater picture. Transporting mouthwash is hardly going to increase people's self-worth. And yes, even Elongated Musket with all hos billions isn't that important. The world would still go around without him. But we still have intrinsic value. We can still bring something.
I found your commentary very valuable. Thank you! I’ve written some of it down in my progress journal that’s been culminating in my personal search for meaning. I hope you’re well
I love art like this stuff, dude. Even though the opinion is from an imcompetent artist, I thought that your poems were really good. It reminds me of the poem from Doctor Nowhere made a few days ago ("where has life gone") Seriously keep on trying dude you make good stuff.
@BogChog I really appreciate that! (: and honestly I don't think there's such a thing as an incompetent artist, as long as you're expressing yourself to others and, much more importantly, to yourself, then I don't really think anything else matters. And I'll have to check out Doctor Nowhere's poem, I love their stuff!
I think the title refers to Jimmy. He never uses the mouthwash as in to say that he doesn't feel remorse from his deeds and thus doesnt need to get rid of the bad taste
I thought it was a reference to curly because when you use mouthwash it takes out the bad scent/taste from your mouth. Curly tried to see jimmy in a good way. (Wash the bad feeling of jimmy out)
I feel like an aspect of the mouthwash might be the need to rinse out everything from your mouth after getting assaulted like Anya did. Since she gets flashbacks from the sounds of pills getting forced down Curley's throat, I can't help but to make that connection in my head... I don't know why nobody mentions this, it was basically the first thing I thought of
@raileymorton1296 if I see a piece of art that invokes the topic, I surely will! Back in the channels infancy I did plan on making a capitalism video, but ultimately trashed it as it didn't really fit the channel's identity at the time
You’ve made reference to at least six different pieces of media, you’ve talked about the flaws of capitalism and gave vague philosophical solutions, and yet you’ve probably spent at most two minutes talking about Mouthwashing. You don’t even directly answer your question for why the game is called as it is. This video has nothing to do with Mouthwashing. This is directionless rhetoric trying to ride a trending indie game’s popularity.
@smirokgambeson3020 I think when analyzing media, one of the best things to do is look at other media, as we come to understand the world through the art we consume, so I have come to understand this game based on other games and media I've seen or heard. Honestly it's just my style of video
