These days, it's a rare thing to find an artist who sounds better live than they do in a pre-recording. By far an away one of the most talented people I've heard in years.
So true. There is no differences between his voice recorded and live. He is not like those high heads of hollywood and those high head producers. He is himslef and you can feel it in each and everone of his songs.
it's cus he isn't dependent on vocal editing in the production. i really like rob kirwins productions but you're right i think he sounds just as good here, if not better.
Yeah I completely agree! It's so good to see musicians creating real music with real instruments. Sure beats the canned variety we're fed through the mainstream.
It's cool that you correlated talent in that way :) He takes complexity to a higher or deeper (however you may see that kind of thing) level and simplifies it in the layout of his lyric. I like how he addresses subjects I like to call "the P words"...passion, piety, perfection, pride, pointing crooked fingers from a mile high pedestal and pontification from behind a glass pulpit...my grandmother was Irish and good at that as well, so I have an uncanny appreciation for unpretentiousness. He takes a full circle approach to human behaviors and the underlying psychology behind them, which is SO my cup of tea ;)...I could go on for days...LOL. The way he puts it out there is amazingly accurate because it's as you described so well...360 degrees of pure humanism. It's the one point of interest we all share and it's also what makes his music so very interesting to me. Of course the guitar works too ;)
Choir nerd here. I do too! When he sings normally, he’s using a part of his voice called “mixed voice”, which is called so because it is in between the raspy “chest voice” and clear “head voice”. (All of these are called “vocal registers” if you want to learn more about any of this.)When he does those little “tweaks” he’s flipping into his head voice so the voice breaks then goes abruptly but beautifully into head voice. (This is the same thing yodel-ers do, except they usually do it from their chest voice to get a clearer break in between the two, leaving mixed voice out entirely.) beautiful, right?! Sorry I hope you don’t mind me unloading facts on you but I just thought you are someone else who stumbles across this comment might like to know what and how he does that!
Babe, there's something tragic about you Something so magic about you Don't you agree? Babe, there's something lonesome about you Something so wholesome about you Get closer to me No tired sighs, no rolling eyes, no irony No 'who cares', no vacant stares, no time for me Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door Babe, there's something wretched about this Something so precious about this [Live version inclusion: Where to begin Babe, there's something broken about this But I might be hoping about this.] Oh, what a sin To the strand a picnic plan for you and me A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree
Exquisite work. There are full novels within this man's songs. Even as an author, I still covet Hozier's way of saying so much using so few words. Such cool verbal economy. A true poet. Bravo, my man! I WILL be copping that album!
crazy to listen to this in 2020. He sounds so young! Still talented of course. But I feel like his overall sound has matured. Been fortunate enough to see him live twice. Always amazing.
I could never get tired of hearing him sing. It's absolute perfection. I swear I had autoplay on and I didn't realize this was live until I heard a few differences in the way he sings some parts of it. I always love it when I come across an artist who sounds good (if not better in his case) live.
This Artist is my NEW ALL TIME FAVORITE,,dear God he's talented and controversial. At the same time not pointing any fingers, he's quite BRILLIANT and his voice, is absolutely. Amazing! I can listen to his voice and music forever on end. These lyrics a supernatural! !! AWESOME Hozier!
Take Me to Church was my first exposure to Hozier. I was mesmerized by the voice, the song, and the delivery. Artists that freeze me in my tracks and send chills through my body are rare. I'm having a hard time putting into words how amazed I am with the Album and the Videos. Outstanding.
Hozier, a wonderful poet. While I am writing my book, only Hozier plays. Puts me in a certain emotional state to create. Thank you for sharing your art.

Out of curiosity i start finding out what artists were Irish. If i was to list what i've found then jaws would drop. An embarrassment of riches and its awesome.
Seeing the cello in action during this song is amazing. Watching them perform it without a crowd or any pressures is so fun; it gives us a look at them just enjoying what they do. Fuck I love music.
Proof that music sounds best with as few things getting in the way as possible. The simplicity and honesty of the attic set-up makes for a song and a shared moment that captures all of our hearts. x
Honey, you're familiar; like my mirror years ago. Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming; honey, ask me, I should know! I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door... So underrated. Beautifully written...borderline genius
In no particular order, the best singer/songwriters from UK and Ireland now ~~~ Hozier (incredible voice), George Ezra (great voice, bluesy music), Johnny Flynn (one of a kind renaissance man, great musician and lyricist)
I feel like this has more emotion in it. And not only that it feels more real and conveying the actual feelimg more than the recorded version. Hhhhhh this man is beautiful and I can't get enough
I love watching these older videos he produced before being big over here. Different arrangements and different melodies... gives me hope for my music!
Why he isn't he more famous I don't know. CLASS! I hope he won't get any more famous tho'. I don't need every moron listening to these songs and ruining them for all of us.
krakou2 I meant album production, events in venues other than obscure studios and talk-shows. Now that I've cleared that up. You're the closest thing to the stereotype of idiot online troll. Cheers
Damn I wish people would go explore their town and find guys like this. Give small musicians a chance and find gems like Hozier not keep digging in that top 50 shit.
I listen to dis song about 20 times a day- there is someting tragic about all of us. We are who we were so long ago before we knew who we we would be in dis life-
I don't normally comment on anything but this has truly moved something within me. Not just this song but all of them. I've had you on repeat for the last week and shared with anyone who will listen. What a voice! Love the unique three piece, guitar, cello, drums. Something fresh - a great song....sooooo catchy ... great arrangement and liquid gold voice to die for.

Every once in a while you stumble upon something unique and beautiful that makes you think there may be hope for music.....
Your perfect..😍
We'll said he can be great
Yeah I completely agree! It's so good to see musicians creating real music with real instruments. Sure beats the canned variety we're fed through the mainstream.
I agree as well. 360 degrees of talent all day long!

I love that tweak in his voice at every "baaaaaaabe"

jesus. this one is better than the produced version. i like this dude
Yea the album one doesnt have the same intensity as this one.
He needs a live album like this
It's that unplugged feel that nirvana and Alice in chains had. To me those versions sounded so much better than the original
Finally after listening to this song on TH-cam for 10 years, I got to see Hozier perform live 3 days ago. Dreams do come true 🙂
I just saw him finally last week! I literally cried during cherry wine - never had that I experience at a concert
@@vn43twelve finally saw him a few months ago, cherry wine got me too lol

how is he controversial ?
@@arlinnicole6068 he supports lgbtq people, which makes him controversial to some, but awesome to people like me :)
Ooooooo look an artist who actually sounds just like they do on their album when they sing live...

I'll happily 'take him to church' 7 days a week!!😅😅😅😅
Omg baby Alex on drums and fetus Andrew have me weak!!
This one is still my favourite version.

Some people are born with a voice and a soul that are meant to share. Hozier is one of them.
i remember seeing this in my recommended videos almost 11 years ago idk why i clicked it but im so happy i did :) so so proud of how far he's come
There is something so special about this song, I always start smiling when I hear it.

Well you know they say that if it hadn't been for whiskey, the Irish would rule the world.
What other Irish artists do you recommend?
He is lyrically amazing. And that voice is soulful and beautiful. I wish more music sounded this heartfelt.
Irish musical talent is alive and well !
This song has haunted me since I first heard it. I can't get it out of my head. I love all his work but for some reason this one... wow. LOVE it.
he honestly sounds better live and it blows me away
Brilliant. " our music did survive through famine and oppression " and Xfactor.

This is the video that I first discovered Hozier in 7 years ago. Came back to reminisce. Not disappointed. Forgot how much I love this guy.
Nice - love the 5/4 time and his voice and melody. Real refreshing. Reminds me of early Van Morrison. Good stuff!
I couldn't agree more! I'm a ridiculous fan of van morrison and that exactly what I thought whilst listening :)
First one I have seen comment on the fact that it is in 5! I love this.
That first note just killed me... officially a fan! :)
+Nikki95 (NikkiBABY) - exactly !!!! The first note and then that opening lyric, instant fan

Beautiful soul truly from the heart.Thank for sharing your heart it woke mine up.
This is still my favorite version of this song. His vocals, his guitar, the cello, and the drums. That's all this needs
Here I am still watching this seven years later.
Saw you live in October 2019 and it was truly a masterful performance.
Like wine to the soul
Thanks to Hozier, for reminding me that music is magic. I'm in love with this.
Amidst so much crap out there, this is simply a massive breath of fresh air.
Beautiful, original, soulful - Thank you.....
Hozier, I love these in-studio videos! I just adore your talent, your voice and those beautiful, long, talented fingers of yours! sigh!
One of those special songs that will stand the test of time. And no gimmicks or over-production. Classy.

Good Lord. It feels like his voice does things to me no other artist ever has.
