  • Satara Rest Camp: A Rich Blend of History and Wildlife
Nestled within the heart of the Kruger National Park, Satara Rest Camp offers visitors a glimpse into history and the wild beauty of the African bush. Though its exact origin remains uncertain, it is widely believed that Satara may have received its name from an old map drawn by an Indian surveyor in the late 1800s. The word "satrah," meaning 17 in Hindi, was possibly used to mark the area, though the full story remains elusive.
    Some Historical information
Tourism amenities in Kruger only began in earnest in 1928, with Satara being one of the first camps to receive “rest huts” along with Pretoriuskop and Skukuza. In 1929, Satara saw the addition of two rondavels, modest yet important accommodations that paved the way for future development. Over the years, it has grown into a hub for tourists seeking a classic African safari experience.
Today, Accommodation Options are varied and numerous:
Satara Rest Camp provides a range of accommodations to suit different preferences:
Tent or Caravan Camp Sites: Featuring electrical power points, communal kitchens, and bathrooms. Guests need to bring their own tents or motor homes, with a maximum of six people per site.
    Bungalows:
Available in two- or three-bed configurations, these units come with private bathrooms and air-conditioning. Some bungalows have kitchen facilities, and all are equipped with a fridge.
    Guest Cottages:
Larger units that can accommodate five to six people with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.
    Guest Houses:
These luxury accommodations are ideal for larger groups of up to ten guests and come equipped with kitchens.
    Activities & Facilities
Visitors at Satara can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including guided bush walks , and game drives, led by experienced guides.
Note that children under six are not allowed on game drives, and children under twelve cannot participate in bush walks.
The camp boasts a range of amenities including:
    - A restaurant, deli, and shop
    - Laundromat and filling station
    - Communal kitchens and bathrooms
    - A swimming pool and children’s playground
    - An eco-information centre and amphitheatre
    - First-aid assistance and picnic areas with bomas for day visitors
Though cell phone reception is limited, visitors may get some connection via the MTN network.
    Interesting Facts and Rules
When Kruger first opened to tourists in the late 1920s, rules were minimal. Over time, regulations evolved to ensure safety and conservation. These include speed limits, restrictions on nighttime travel, and prohibitions on littering and damaging natural objects-regulations still enforced today.
Satara Rest Camp offers the perfect balance of historical significance and thrilling wildlife experiences, making it a must-visit destination in the Kruger National Park.
