    In this video, you'll learn how to tie a cleat hitch for a recreational boat roughly 50 feet. We used a J170 sailboat in this video.
    Follow the steps below to learn how to properly tie a cleat hitch.
    Step 1: Wrap the line under the horn of the cleat, around the backside of the cleat first, then the side furthest away from the opposite attaching point.
    The angle of the line from the cleat to the other attaching point should be less than 90 degrees.
    Step 2: Turn the line ¾ of the way around the base of the cleat. Do not cross over the line under the horns that goes towards the opposite attaching point.
    Step 3: Lift the line over the cleat, crossing the top, and then wrap the line under the horn. It should look like the beginning of a figure 8.
    Step 4: Pull the line back over the top towards the opposite cleat horn, crossing over the line that was just wrapped around the cleat horn.
    Make a small loop in the line and place the loop over the opposite cleat horn. Pull the line tight.
    It is important to spin the loop properly so that end result is one line over two perpendicular lines. If done correctly, the line will easily unload when needed.

    The process for tying a cleat hitch I’m presenting is the American Sailing Associations recommended cleat hitch. There are certainly other versions. I’ve used this method for many years, and it works just fine. I can unwrap for surging easily. It will not bind even if it’s not been untied for months. No contact with the standing part, as would be the case in a full round turn. Thx all for the comments. Fair Winds. Capt Dave

    When done correctly, as shown here, the locking turn cannot jam. The locking turn will only jam if one doesn't do a complete all-around turn followed by at least two cross-over turns. When attached correctly, the locking turn carries very little loading and is always easy to unlock. Also, many make the mistake of doing the locking turn in the wrong direction; After the initial all-around, every other turn must cross the cleat.

    Correct me if I'm wrong: This is the temporary cleat hitch (lunches, shopping etc.). For longer unattended stays, the rope eeds to wrap a full turn around the base for a double binding & the rest of the steps remain the same, correct? (prob should be mentioned in this video also)

    Do you have a video on now to walk your boat around at a slip? For example, right now my houseboat is docked with the bow forward. I understand that you can walk the boat off the dock with a rope on the stern, push off the bow of the boat to one side, and pull the boat around rope, without starting it up. Then it can easily be pulled back into the slip. I can't find a video on it. Someone told me it's "walking the boat," but there is nothing.

    The half wrap cleat hitch is fine for temporary docking (fuel docks, restaurantson the water, etc), but if it's for long term (over night or several days) you are better off using the full wrap cleat hitch.

    The first thing I judge about a captain and his crew is how they tie-up their boat. The vast majority of recreational boaters don't do it well. As far as I am concerned, when using a hitch, the cleat hitch described in this video is the correct way. I agree with the sea scouts, local law enforcement and Harbormasters, the Coast Gaurd, merchant marines and the U.S. Navy on this matter.

    To belay or knot belay, that is the question. There are two schools of thought about that. 1) The big boat operators who make fast with figure eights. 2) The small boat operators who make fast with knots. See “coastguard boating education “.
    When I was studying for the yacht master license, the class was told that anyone who puts a hitch on a cleat during the practical test, will fail. Because if the knot is needed it will jam. Possibly beyond your ability to undo it.
    A demonstration on tying the perfect granny knot might also interest novices.

  • @nevillecottee7629

    Professional boatmen never put locking hitches on cleats, unless the boat is small, with undersized cleats. Try not to overlook the fact that they too were once novices.

    Right you lot!! Before I even hit play I could see this was incorrect!!! When mooring to a pontoon or a quayside or anywhere, you only put the end of the mooring warp ashore, the rest of the rope goes back to the boat and all adjustments and making fast are done onboard. Learn to splice an eye ands simply drop it over the cleat, job done.
    Okay? Got it all you unqualified boat owners who call yourselves captains but who have never passed an exam to justify the honourable tile!

      @@railroad9000 with all due respect sir You are wrong! That is how the US Navy & USCG teach securing a line to a cleat, bit or bollard! "Always make a complete round turn around the base". I have spent 37 years in the marine industry, 22 years USCG & 15 years commercial maritime industry (Chief Boatswains Mate and Chief Mate of a commercial seismic vessel). If properly done I have NEVER had a full round turn jam! I do however agree never use a weather hitch (locking hitch) wet or dry conditions. I have seen those seize up many times!

  • @warjacare

    Captain Dave, it ties the boat well, but the last locking turn SHALL NOT be done! Unless you have a special need to to do it.
    Not long ago I learned from the British Navy that it is safer to make several unlocked turns. It might not look beautiful but makes it safer to untie the boat. Me and probably 99% of all sailors have been tying the boat the way you show here for ages, but unfortunately it can jam. It happend to me in the past.

    👎 Okay, your text-based instructions were distracting. Had to quickly switch from watching carefully to reading carefully, and back again. And, while reading, also had to try to figure out why some words are in bold, others not. For example, in the first step, why is the word "line" in bold? It's no more important than the rest of the sentence.

    Uh ... GetmyBoat Captain ... sorry to be picky, but those lines really aren't perpendicular to the others. They do however cross the others at the same angle. Perpendicular specifically means a line that is at 90 degrees, aka right angles, to another. Those three lines cross at more like 45-60 degrees. Just saying. That was a well tied knot, just not quite accurately described. Oops!

  • @flick22601
    @flick22601 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    NEVER underwrap the last loop. NEVER. The purpose of a cleat is to fasten a line by friction. When a pull is exerted on the line, it will tighten on the cleat. Should the line around the cleat become tight say, an object trying to drag your boat under or a load that is increasing toward the lines breaking point, you won't be able to loosen it. Just do the figure 8's and be done with it.

    • @nevillecottee7629
      @nevillecottee7629 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deadlata9767 .. .Did he say that the hitch on the horn of the cleat should only be used to secure small boats?
      Study my comment more carefully. I said “Big boat operators make fast with figure eights. Small boat operators make fast with knots.”
      I’ve seen lots of jammed hitches, but never on a pontoon in a sheltered bay. In the unlikely event of a hitch jamming there, nobody would know except the guy who has to release it with a knife, and he wouldn’t blab about it, because the most probable cause at a safe haven is when a skipper forgets to cast off a line that’s been secured with a hitch, and then attempts to power away.
