As someone who writes and edits audio projects, their first main problem was not waiting until the script was finished before getting a cast. I always wait until I have a confirmed finished script before attempting to run auditions (because I do a lot of waiting for people to volunteer and seeing if they actually deliver). I don't expect professionalism, I just want people to have fun with their chosen roles.
I was a sound designer for the game and I noticed the same thing. I worked on character NPC lines (yours included) and I realized a lot were used for SFM cutscenes and not for NPCs. Whole project was a mess and Berkan/Frank was very quiet about it.
AJ Patterson yes, atleast I believe actors can be credited for voice work on video games. For example, I know that on IMDb, the actress who voiced Eleanor lamb from BioShock 2 has it listed in her credits. So Alex could well be listed as doing voice work on there.
Honestly it doesn't matter the race of the voice actor all they really need is to convey the character A person with a British accent won't be convincing as an American Also I think IHE ment that if he's Asian and he's American then it wouldn't make sense for him to have the British accent.

ImmaLittlePip the race of the voice actor doesn’t necessarily matter unless you’re implementing their culture in their character somehow. So it would be really beneficial for a well written script if the voice actor could connect on that level
Hi, 3D Artist (freelancer) for the game here. (You can see my name in the credits under 3D Artists) I feel everything you just said in this video. The unorganized mess the production was, the being left in the dark without knowing what the game even looks like, the lack of direction, etc. I also noticed the red flags but didn't respond to them. I was hopeful that the game was going to be okay because I was reassured that everything was going great. This is depressing to be honest. I put almost a year into the project and my models don't even look the same when they were imported into the game. I can't even say that I worked on it without feeling ashamed, and I think I did an alright job on the models, just when they were imported into the game they look COMPLETELY different. They were shiny where they shouldn't be, they were missing parts, the colors were different, the materials look weird, etc.. I feel like a laughing stock and fear that my reputation as a 3D Artist would somewhat be tarnished because people look at the game and say "Oh so you made THIS?" when in reality it looks nothing like it does on my end. I don't know man, I am rambling. I don't really know what to say. At least I can say that I worked on a game with you in it and I'm a fan so I'll take what I can get haha. I too wasn't really paid. I quit the project mid 2017 and a couple of months before the game's release, I was asked to texture some things because they were short on hands or something like that. I agreed to do it only if I was getting paid upfront which I did, but I am owed waaaay more than what I got on that. I guess I joined the project because I am young to the industry and at my profession in general, and I was picked up and hoped that the game would be great. It sounded very promising and exciting. It was also my first (pretend) job so I was excited for it. I was a beginner in every sense and by working for the game, I was forced to grow as a 3D Artist which I am thankful for. So it wasn't all bad I guess.. Again, I don't really know what to say, I am clearly rambling. I don't understand why this should be a problem. If IHE can't do an American accent then that's understandable, but then it doesn't matter what heritage the character has, since he's predominantly American. When it comes to voice acting, anything goes: women voicing little boys, humans voicing aliens, VA with one heritage voicing character with another. Unless he got the direction to sound Asian and American at the same time there's no issue. Making it one is like demanding a transsexual role in a movie be played by a transsexual (that happened), when it really doesn't matter so long as the actor is good.

I think a good director would: 1. Cast actors knowing what he wants form them and knowing they can deliver that 2. Work with them to help them get the performance he wants None of that seems to have happened here.
Originally based a mapper for this game, I was never credited because I quit early because me and Berkan ( the director ) had a large argument. But, that argument was the best thing of my life... He promised $50 per map, never received. Development was an unorganized mess, none of the developers got a full version of the game until released. Didn't know the story, didn't know there was even a Discord Fuck this shit.

cicada300 I was actually surprised when IHE said his character is supposed to be Asian, since I thought he looked European. Maybe he looks a little Eurasian (emphasis on maybe) I guess.... If he was of an Iranian/Persian and European mix that is. He really doesn't look much like someone with East Asian ancestry. He did in the concept art though, which makes it a bit weirder. Maybe they decided to scrap this Nick character being an Asian-American when they decided IHE should use his normal English accent instead. And just like how they ended up using both his American and British voice lines, they didn't bother changing his in game character model completely either.

for someone who lives from giving the mic an oral, Keemostar really has no idea how to speak in front of a mic for audio recording, i keep hearing him spitting to the mic pronouncing "P"s and "B"s
Best part? Do you have any idea how easy it is to add fake radio static to audio? It's like three or four mouse clicks. There's even different types of static audio you can download if you wanted to switch it up a little.

The thing is, having TH-camrs voice-acting in a game can work even if it's not tongue-in-cheek. Pinstripe and Bendy and the Ink Machine are great examples of this. The difference between those games and Hunt Down the Freeman is that those voice actors were actually given direction and good material, and in some cases were already pretty decent at voice-acting or were given characters that meshed with their vocal style.

I think the bigger problem with an English person voicing an Asian American is the American part, seeing as his nationality will have a bigger influence on how he sounds than his race. As long as the voice actor can do a convincing job, I don't think ethnicity should be a problem in casting (for voice actors at least).
I was gonna say...the fact IHE is white isn't the issue, It doesn't matter if you're Asian, Hispanic or whatever, it's the nationality that's gonna mostly decide how someone will sound. The fact it's an American character...with an English accent is what's ridiculous. Then again maybe they decided to take the Sean Connery approach?
CheetahGaming thats like saying it's dumb for adults to voice act for children. If they do a good job, its fine. Its only stupid if they don't have the acting skills. The most important thing in voice acting is that the voice fits the character. Whether the ethnicity is the same usually won't matter as long as the actor has the skills to sound the way the character would. This isn't live action, so the voice is the only thing that matters.
Just going to add on - most of the people in my town are Chinese, and I know for a fact that ethnicity is not as important as language and culture when it comes to how people sound. The Chinese kids who were raised in China or speak Mandarin or Cantonese at home sound slightly different because their accent affects their English. The ones who were raised here and only speak English sound just the same as all the other kids who were raised here. I can guarantee if I played a sound clip of my freinds of various races, all raised in the same area and who speak the same first language, no one would be able to tell their races apart because the dialect of English we speak isnt associated with any particular race.

Just to clarify: when I wrote this I was pretty emotional about the whole thing and I was mostly venting my frustrations. Because of the way I worded the above it kind of sounds like I am seeking attention or praise or what not. That is not my intention. I don't think I deserve praise or anything like that but I do want to share my perspective as well and in a sense kind of distance myself from the production of the game. That's not to say I think the people at RRE are bad people because I don't think they are. They are just very very inexperienced and don't really take no for an answer when it comes to criticism. So don't take what I wrote as a well thought out thesis about my experience with the production of the game, but rather as a sympathetic venting wall of text haha.

I don't understand why this should be a problem. If IHE can't do an American accent then that's understandable, but then it doesn't matter what heritage the character has, since he's predominantly American.
When it comes to voice acting, anything goes: women voicing little boys, humans voicing aliens, VA with one heritage voicing character with another.
Unless he got the direction to sound Asian and American at the same time there's no issue. Making it one is like demanding a transsexual role in a movie be played by a transsexual (that happened), when it really doesn't matter so long as the actor is good.

I think a good director would:
1. Cast actors knowing what he wants form them and knowing they can deliver that
2. Work with them to help them get the performance he wants

He did in the concept art though, which makes it a bit weirder. Maybe they decided to scrap this Nick character being an Asian-American when they decided IHE should use his normal English accent instead. The thing is, having TH-camrs voice-acting in a game can work even if it's not tongue-in-cheek. Pinstripe and Bendy and the Ink Machine are great examples of this. The difference between those games and Hunt Down the Freeman is that those voice actors were actually given direction and good material, and in some cases were already pretty decent at voice-acting or were given characters that meshed with their vocal style.
In pinstripe, felix and sean's characters are pretty loose to the plot so they can just be their own quirky selves.

I think the bigger problem with an English person voicing an Asian American is the American part, seeing as his nationality will have a bigger influence on how he sounds than his race. As long as the voice actor can do a convincing job, I don't think ethnicity should be a problem in casting (for voice actors at least).
I was gonna say...the fact IHE is white isn't the issue, It doesn't matter if you're Asian, Hispanic or whatever, it's the nationality that's gonna mostly decide how someone will sound.
The fact it's an American character...with an English accent is what's ridiculous.

CheetahGaming thats like saying it's dumb for adults to voice act for children. If they do a good job, its fine. Its only stupid if they don't have the acting skills. The most important thing in voice acting is that the voice fits the character. Whether the ethnicity is the same usually won't matter as long as the actor has the skills to sound the way the character would. This isn't live action, so the voice is the only thing that matters.
Just going to add on - most of the people in my town are Chinese, and I know for a fact that ethnicity is not as important as language and culture when it comes to how people sound. The Chinese kids who were raised in China or speak Mandarin or Cantonese at home sound slightly different because their accent affects their English. The ones who were raised here and only speak English sound just the same as all the other kids who were raised here. I can guarantee if I played a sound clip of my freinds of various races, all raised in the same area and who speak the same first language, no one would be able to tell their races apart because the dialect of English we speak isnt associated with any particular race.
