Hey man, hobby-game-dev here. I just wanted to say, I really like the more "gritty" or "raw" style of your videos. It feels a bit more authentic. Many other channels give more a "youtuber-vibe" than an "actual-gamedev-vibe" (which is fine of course, but there are so many of those channels already).

Full time job + kids and having a nearly finished game in the pipeline. You can be proud of you. I am a full time dev myself and since 10+ years I didn't get stuff done and I have NO kids. xD
    Wishlisted your game :)

The way you talk about game development always inspires me to keep making things. I don't necessarily need more inspiration, but you still provide that extra boost. Great to see how the game has come together and how muchy you've learned over the years!

I've been following along with the game's development since you first started and it's been quite a journey. Most game devs give up after working on something this long so I'm glad you've been able to stay motivated.
    Good luck

6:04 - Same here. But honestly I think you chose the correct path. Early on I tried using a lot of Unity asset store tools to speed up the process. But in the long run, it's much more work to incorporate into my own scripts because I didn't fully understand how to trouble shoot issues. Nowadays if I can't code it myself, I won't put it into the game. Keep up the grind. 💪

Thanks for the update, good to see you. I wish you good luck and God speed! I appreciate just how much work is involved and how exausting it is to maintain this level of commitment. Stay strong and steady and it'll all be worth it. Rooting for you! Hope you make more content about what you've learned through the process once you've shipped.

Really enjoyed the talk, especially the part about making systems instead of a game. As my technical and artistic skills have grown, I've noticed that game design is still perhaps the biggest nut to crack about being a solo developer. Having a better first guess at things and reducing iterations here would save so much time.
Wish you all the luck for 2025!

I just wanted to say, I've been following the development of this game since the early days, before you upgraded the graphics and character models. I was excited for it back then, but I'm even more excited for it now. Seeing where you are at, and the creative decisions you have made. I love the devlogs, and just kinda coming along in the journey with you. Much love, keep up the good work. And I'm buying this day one when it comes out.

As a professional animator from the TV and Movie space I have been thoroughly impressed with you animations. They seem both fluid and economical at the same time, bravo. For my game all the animation is traditional, throwing economics out the window, and its rough.

I work for like 15 years as mostly environment artist in larger productions with some character and VFX sometimes. I started my own project at home now as well and learning tons of stuff about blueprint (unreal engine) and animation etc. parts I don't have experience with.
Just making animation man is so tricky, apart from making the rig which I also had not much clue about. Then the engine part of it with blending, combining, wobbling, timing with gameplay etc. is so damn hard. My animations still look so cheap xD
Your work looks amazing! I like watching Indie or Solo devs talking about their experience.
    Wishlisted your game

Love seeing the direction the game is going and to see you back on TH-cam! I've had your game wishlisted for quite a while and plan on buying it the second I see it for sale on Steam!
I love the berserker looking mode and the violent viking vibes you have. The additions of different enemy types like poison seems like a good call. It's a classic mechanic and it works so well in so many games. I also love hearing about the addition of RPG elements.

Well done John! You seem to be very clear and focussed in what you have to do next. Having the bulk of the artwork done is a major plus.
I would however recommend lots of playtesting ASAP and allow time for fixing issues and balancing based on their feedback - There's nothing quite like 100 players to break your perfect game and find a 100 new issues! :)
As developer also making a game on Steam, I'm super interested in your release phase, timing, numbers, strategy etc. I hope you will be covering that part of your journey (and beyond) in detail. This kind of information is pure gold. But please take care of yourself and don't overdo it - put your health first. We'll be cheering you on in any event! Best of luck! DaleJ.

Almost there!!! 💪 If you can make a video about your animation knowledge, that would be awesome. I totally get it about creating your own systems. I like to understand what is happening with my creations (games or web apps), so I try to do as much as possible by myself. It is a nice trait, but it works like a sword, and sometimes it can hurt you. Anyhow, your game looks awesome and all the time you spent learning for it is paying. Not sure if it is going to give you the monetary reward you are expecting, but you are already a more robust game developer because of Mead & Blood (and a role model to follow, at least for me) ✌

Hi John. Blood and Mead is looking good. I have a few suggestions regarding the artwork. I think the player's axe should get bloody everytime you attack the enemy. It helps sell the carnage on the screen. In Berserk Mode, I would suggest changing the colour of the aura from blue to red to signify the rage of the character. You could also have blood splatter on the character's body during this mode.
