I've only recently started getting into western classical music, but man, you've got me addicted to this Tchaikovsky violin concerto. I keep coming back to this video and the Seattle symphony one.
Ray Chen is among one of the first worldwide renowned concert violinists to utilize the latest technological advances of the internet in a most personal manner. Although his generous offering reveals his less serious and warm character, one should never underestimate the extremely rare virtuosity and the impeccable technique he possesses.
I simply cannot fathom how many tens of thousands of hours of practice it takes to be able to learn and play every single note from memory and with supreme virtuosity as the lead violinist in a 36-minute violin concerto composed by Tchaikovsky. How is that even humanly possible? I'm absolutely in awe.
wow.And here I am thinking the same thing. how phenomenal the human being is. I'll have to be born again and try to do the next thing, maybe in another generation.
I bet sometimes the other violinists look at the soloist at rehearsal and think, “Why can’t that be me?” Then come showtime they be like “So glad that’s not me!” It’s such a vulnerable position!
This is my favorite Violin Concerto and this performance and recording may be my favorite to date. The soloist and orchestra under Mr. Varga's conducting are as hand in glove. The playing of Mr. Chen is powerful, passionate and mature for a young man. I am so impressed that Ray Chen is deserving of being at the top of Olympus with the who's who of violinists. So impressive ! I love this in its entirety. Everybody all in all the way through. Kudos everyone and especially Ray Chen amd Maestro Gilbert Varga for a historic work of art. Thank you !!!
So glad to see Queen Elisabeth Competition released this competition video. It's so precious and I have been searching him playing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major for so long. From official web site knows Ray is the first prize winner of the year and you see his skill is already telling you that he will be one of the brightest violinists later on. Amazing!
This piece is one of my all time favourites but usually when played, I feel the orchestra falling to temptation to pick up speed and rush it. Here we have an excellent orchestra and a bravo performer who not only shows power and passion but real discipline in playing at the right speed. He uses those extra parts of a second to inject additional passion and power into his notes when required. Bravo Mr. Chen. You brought me to tears every time I listen to this. I keep coming back to it after watching other versions.
12:50 I can't help but imagine Mr. Bean having a conversation with Ray In all seriousness, I just realized it has been 13 years since I first watched his Saint Saëns Introduction Et Rondo Capriccioso in this competition. Thank you for uploading this so we can now finally watch his Tchaikovsky Violin Concert! He has done and is still doing much good toward for the music community bringing more audiences and inspiring the next generations of musicians!
My impression is that this concerto is like a toy for Chen. It is easy for him to play. It sounds so elegant and delicate under his fingers. He feels the music deeply with his heart and soul. I am amazed. Bravo. 🎉❤
I find myself being fascinated by Ray's reversible bow-tie. Suitable for whether the orchestra is in white or black tie on any given night! (Gorgeous playing, Ray. It's fun to contrast this with your recent rendition with the Seattle Symphony!)
Wow! And he has performed on the streets with Karolina Protsenko. Showing her the way to being a better violinist. He is an amazing human being and violinist.
Finally the whole concert in one and with a better quality. Ray Chen was already an outstanding violinist at the age of 19 and was already there with all his emotions. I like it so much and he always takes me on a journey into classical music🎻♥️🎶
Ray I love you. Absolutely lovely . You have great demeanor comes through your playing. Your mighty interpretation. The subtleties. Great phrasing. May you soar far and wide. Live long and prosper.
It's the first time I'm watching this. I see my violin teacher sitting by the first violin group. That's very nice for me to see, I must say. But Ray Chen is a fabulous violinist, and has a good humor. Tchaikovsky remains a topper for sure....
wow.. I am in love with your playing Mr. Chen.. I listened to so many violinist and by far you have the intonation and the soul of the song. I have listened to so many players and I listen to your solos the most because you have a unique quality that I have not heard ...in this lifetime or perhaps the others I have lived. It is magical. It is as if I am in the time period and I transcend to that magical arena of the composer and musician creating this beautiful melody.. I feel every note and transition and everlasting movement of this song.
This was quite a lovely & even fantastic "experience"! I had to deliberately breathe several times because some moments captures my breath. I enjoyed being able to sit still quietly and simply appreciate this exquisite artistic masterful performance. Splendid! Amazing! Well done!
The best version i saw was that of David Oistrakh with the Moscow symphony. David was the master and the conductor and orchestra followed his pace. There is a tendency to be sucked into the frenzy of this composition but David's performance was in full control and he really gave emphasis where it should be.
Dear ray, it's me, Kevin Kumars apprentice, like anakin Skywalker and obi won kenobi...everything is a form of power. Seeing, breathing, thinking, are all forms of power. Do you see what I mean? Your vibrato, your bow grip, are both forms of power. What does your power tell you to do? Listen to your power.
I miss potato quality - it helps cover up intonation mishaps hahaha
wow it's the real ray chen :0
So glad they uploaded this! Can't believe it's been 13 years since I started following you!
!two days ago!!!!????

Sounds amazing anyways 🥰
OMG, he was only 19 or 20 years old at this point in time and already a world-renowned Virtuoso.

I became aware of Ray Chen through the TwoSet violin channel. He is now on my bucket list to see someday!

Ray Chen's smile was so adorable even back then!
Great performance!
Great performance.
This is why Tchaikovsky needed to compose one only violin concerto.
Ray has improved so damn much since this performance!
Thats what I thought, too!!!!!! 💯

YES! It´s been stored accruing dust somewhere for 12 years.
This is history.
Ray was just SO young, funny to see ❤
But he literally won this... 🎉🎉
Can we give a shout out to the Belgian National Orchestra? They sound great
Having just watched his live performance, I'd say he enjoys performing and is a lot of fun to see perform as well as listen to.
I'm so proud of him and this orchestra.
Let only music rule the world fans & let it sound just this good

Hi Cecilia. That is actually why I walked in here today :-D
The same music. But I guarantee he is more famous for his poised recovery from a broken string at Seattle years later.
