That explanation using the center of mass and how it affects the gravity was amazing and very easy to understand! Great tips. Also what skatepark is that, it looks amazing 🤩
Thank you so much, this video has really helped me. I have never been able to get to the top of a ramp for my whole time skating, but when I watched this, it changed everything! Thank you!!!
Great video, I was at the ramp having some trouble to pump... as soon as I watched the video I got the logic behind the movement and killed it. Thanks bro
The way you explained this was so perfect. I was kind've just trying to throw my weight up hills... but now I will jump at the base of the ramp and see how that works. I bet this is going to help a ton. Thanks!
You have some of the most comprehensive skate videos I have seen. I just started skating because my son wanted a skate and your videos have been great. I like how you break down the physics of the process as well. Keep it up. ✌️🤘
*I love longboarding, surfing, and skating, but man I love the physics too. and the science and math behind music makes it even better too. I love science. and skating. and music* :)
pumping around is called carving. you need somewhat looser trucks in order to carve, since you do not lift your front truck. it is very different than a kick turn.
Thanks, I've been having trouble pumping and this helps, regardless of the physics 😉. I watch the movements more than the science behind so all good 👍. What a great park too so cool. 🇦🇺
You can also pump from side to side to accelerate instead of pushing, this is a core skill for surfing. You can do it at a skate park but its easier with any kind of longboard, because of improved horizontal leverage and no wheelbite. This works better the faster you are going, but you can even pump up long gentle hills without pushing. Approach the hill with enough energy, at least 15 or 20 mph, and you can maintain that energy all the way up.
I tried to teach myself to skate when I was a kid. I could stay on the board, push, and go around right turns in a lazy fashion. That was it. If only TH-cam existed back then (if only the internet existed back then). At least I can watch good videos.
Your tutorial helped me to finally pump all the way up to a high ramp without getting off my board. And what an awesome skatepark that is! Where is it? Thanks.
Justin Lauria Skateboarding Good news! I was able to go back and forth, and make it to the top of the ramp while pumping. Honestly, I cannot thank you enough. Not a single lie in this video. You just got a new subscriber.
I need to know how to get up those ramps that go down and there length is a bit longer than the other ones because I can get up normal ones but when I get to those other type I get almost up and then fall down cause I dident go all the way up
Great video. I've been told that on a mini ramp you need to push down as you go down.... you are essentially saying that you just need to get low, but I can see that when you come off the transition you do push down with your legs and your head kinda remains the same height. Can you explain the idea behind your technique here?
Ian Donald It's all about the timing of when you are squatting down. By the time you get to the bottom of the ramp, your head is going to ultimately fall the height of the ramp, and if you were to keep your knees locked out the whole time, you'd gain a little bit of speed in the process. But if you make your head fall that distance at the exact right TIME, by squatting down into the curved part of the ramp AND pushing into it with your legs, you can maximize that speed boost you're going to get, since you're actively adding to your sideways momentum by pushing away from the ramp with your legs. Once you try it out for a little while in real life, it'll be so easy to feel it happening and your body will instinctively start to do it properly.
Justin Lauria, thanks man. I know it's clearly one of those instinctive muscle memory things. Starting skating again after a seriously long break and it's harder than the first time! Plus only skating flatland before doesn't help.
Hi thanks for video my village only has a half pipe probably about 6 foot plus it's on a slight downhill angle, I'm finding it hard to get get more than 3 pumps then I stop any tips?
Oh man, that half pipe sounds pretty intense! But you're dropping in from the top and then you're coming to a stop after 3 pumps?! That is unreal! It sounds like it's not entirely your fault though, maybe your board has really 'frictiony' wheels/bearings or maybe the ramp is made out of something kinda rough and that's slowing you down. Is everyone else having the same sort of problems with it? If so, you can try to focus on tricks that you can do underneath the coping (early grab, fs 180, ollie to fakie, kickflip to fakie, etc...) If not, it's either your board or you just have to put in more practice time (fun practice though, don't think of it like 'work')
Justin Lauria thanks for getting back to me, I'm nowhere near dropping in yet I'm a noob so starting on the flat, I go when no ones down there and why they are ive not seen anyone on the ramp, there is skate park near buy but wanted to practice in a smll village first so i didnt get in people way.
OK, then you're exactly on track man! To be honest, it's extremely hard to pump at low speeds on a ramp with a long curve (like your 6 foot ramp almost certainly has), so to make it easier, you would need to start out with more speed somehow (i.e. push really hard when you're starting from the bottom),or if possible, work on it on a smaller ramp. Anyway, don't feel like you'll never get it, it'll come (especially once you are able to drop in from the top). In the mean time, just find other fun stuff to do and periodically come back to try the half pipe. One day, it'll just start working :)
Okay man firstly this video was super helpful and it's awesome BUT I'm doing it EXACTLY as is in this video on a half pipe (which I can drop in on and kickturn and that) but if I drop in and ride up one side I pump up and it is a bit faster than if I were to do it without pumping and then pump down and it's fast still but then I go up the other side pump the exact same and it still gives me kind of a boost and I keep pumping the exact same really hard but it just slows down and stops after like 2-3 pumps up each side and I wouldn't even be tired it just stops?!? I've been trying it for so long but everytime this happens will it just get better with even MORE practice or have you anymore tips? Thanks in advance man!
+Conor Spierin Definitely man, that's what happens to everyone at first. It's a very particular motion that you have to drill into your muscle memory. Once you get it, you can really emphasize the motion and use it to go faster and faster rather than just trying to maintain your speed. I know it's really hard to see day to day progress but if you compare yourself to maybe a month ago, it should be easier to see the practice paying off. You'll get the hang of it soon man, I promise! One thing to check, though, is that your wheels and bearings aren't holding you back. If your wheels are deformed or really soft, they can slow you down. Also, make sure you can push and just cruise on flatground with very little friction for a good ways; if not, you might want to clean your bearings or get a new set. If you're not sure, try borrowing someone else's board for a minute and see if there's a difference.
When I first started I had the same problem. Your truck are probably kinda loose, so make sure your footing is proper on the board. Look up some different styles and choose what's most comfortable for you.
Hey! So, first off, I just want to let you know that I very recently did a second video on this topic, and I feel like it explains things much better: th-cam.com/video/8AJKN3QTfoE/w-d-xo.html But to give you a quick answer, before you get to the transition point a tthe bottom of the ramp where it changes from being slanted to being flat, you want to stand up, which adds to the forward momentum you're going to have once you start rolling on the flat part.
@@NeverStopImprovingSB Thank you for the reply and the video, this helps a lot! I just saw others at the park going much faster and never really got why. Hopefully with this information I can do better next time I skate.

Hi was wondering how your progress is going

Best pumping video on youtube. Bar none, trust me I've watched them all.
Michael Jonaitis this is the only video of pumping
why the skateparks are so empty? dreamy places haha great tutorial bro, gonna practice the steps!
I wish mines was that empty
I wish i had a skatepark.
This skatepark was cool
It’s typically what time you show up
Its cool when there are more people there, just to talk and chill with.
that park looks awesome
dude I was just about to type that
pretty sad that we don't have this kind of skate parks in Germany
I dont have skateparks like taht
I mean that
Just started longboarding and I used this on the big speed bumps and it works great.
That explanation using the center of mass and how it affects the gravity was amazing and very easy to understand! Great tips. Also what skatepark is that, it looks amazing 🤩
Thanks a ton! The skatepark is in Pflugerville, Texas, it's one of the biggest in the US!

What a great way to explain going up a ramp. Jumping up the ramp is a good frame of reference.
I was trying to explain to my friend who isn't a skater, but is a physicist, how pumping works. This was perfect, thanks!
Squidalert Yeah man, no problem! When I first learned how to do it, my mind pretty much exploded haha
best guide to pumping on youtube!
Great video ! any chance we can get a "How to Pump around a Bowl!" tutorial ? Just getting into bowl skating now and this was super helpful !

Fantastic video, explains everything really well. Also, that's an amazing park!
really digging the rad surfy feeling in this tuto! great stuff right there! thanks!

Just getting back into skating did it in 7th grade. But had no motive and didn't know what I was doing lol thanks man.
there's this ramp at work like at the skate parks, I usually go down it but ima pump next time I go, thanks for the tip

doing an ollie onto a ramp is harder than pushing. also uses more energy. but looks way cooler

Whats the best wheel size to learn to Pump
You don't need any special wheels to do it, but if you want to go faster, getting bigger wheels will help!
