That ledge around the valve seats, how do you smooth that down without knicking the seats? Also, can you fix Edelbrock's one-angle valve job, using the existing valves and seats, or do you throw those out and start over?

    • @edsmachine93
      @edsmachine93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jeffrykopis5468 Hello Jeffry, thanks for the question and the answer is yes.
We unshrouded the chambers with a radius cutter, 15° bottom and came down to the seat while not touching the valve job.
      Did a full chamber job.
And it is really nice now.
We will redo the valve job, 5 angle intake seat and radius valve job on the exhaust.
Narrow the 45° seat to an appropriate seat width.
      And blend the bowls.
      Port work is already finished.
Valve job and resurfaced is next.
      Thanks for the question.
      I hope this answers you.
      Thanks, EM.

I feel privileged, I've known Ed, since before he opened his shop. I've learned a lot from Ed, he has done work for me on a 170 cid dodge slant 6, a Dodge 3.9 V6 , a 239 cid Ford flathead V8 1950 . And a few other projects, a head for an 84 Pontiac 4 cylinder 1.8 . Even helped me with a sounding rod, you really don't want to know what that's for though.
Great machinist no matter what he works on.

Cool video. Very interesting to watch, good job guys! Devils advocate: nothing is going to be perfect. If a person wanted this time spent on perfecting heads, they'd be $5,000 and nobody would buy them at all. It's all relative. Mass production parts of any type equal imperfection, that's the nature of it.

I sent my '65 383, 1 OE head and one '68 head to a machine shop I happened to find out about. He flat out loved getting to see an untouched relic. He was surprised he found 0 differences between the 3 year spread of the heads. Me good with stock heads cause me not building a shiny looksie race engine. Just an old Mopar ground pounder and they took the Mopar double springs without extra grinding.

I would like for a competent shop like Ed's who is familiar with Mopars do a step-by-step all out rebuild and port job on some 452s, since they're probably still the most plentiful and affordable. • @JustMoparJoe

Thanks for the question. The gasket was a standard felpro they keep for torque plate honing. It’s been expanded already, so is a good template for marking. Some stuff in the video weren’t introduced because they are common practices for shops. Checking head Cc’s, vacuum testing ports, etc. The majority of things in video 1 will be repeated in video 2. I’ve got a set of small block Mopar maxx series (basically like the edelbrock performers) that I disassembled to check things over and I was pretty happy with the quality so far. I'd like to hop it up just a bit, but according to my catalogs, all the cam kits are for 68 and up, and so are the shift kits, torque converters, etc. Why?? If I can't get parts to make them faster, I might as well sell them and get a 360. My project is a 71 Satellite, currently equipped with the factory 318 (cracked block), 904, and 8.25 with 2.76 gears. If I go with a 360, I can keep the lame trans and rear end for a while.

I’ve heard edelbrock quality has gone way down hill over the past number of years. If you want to see power numbers for big block Mopar heads check out engine masters on motor trend. They compared stock 906 vs 440 source aluminum vs edelbrock performer vs trick flow. Each step up made another 20 hp. Cast iron 460 hp, all the way up 520hp on the trick flows based on their combination.

Before I decided to rebuild everything myself I would walk into auto parts store and buy something walk out the door turn around and walk back inside and have them to check the new part. It shouldn't be that way it should be quality or nothing or. 10 year waiting list. @@JustMoparJoe cool man, the flashlight is bright isn't it, you figured out the User interface yet? That's what made really got interest up in the brand was from off I can double tap and be on turbo, hold the button down from off be in moonlight or press it normally and be in your most used lumen level. Not many flashlights have that ability from off to get to everything quickly without cycling through other brightness levels. I mean when you needing to use moonlight mode it's usually because your trying to have minimal light so flashlight it through 2000 lumens kinda defeats the purpose lol.

The exact reason I always tried to just purchase completely bare castings as cheap as possible because the time and effort you place into what you think is an already finished head is two different worlds .
They ( the finished heads straight from the chin-foo manufacturer) are great for the fools that pissed the money away to think they are buying something to slap on a car to look cool, think they are making power and selling the car to another moron , is just foolish pricing for little false gain.
I’ll stick to ancient stage v and cast iron.
If my 511 can make 720hp with ‘78 castings than you can too !
    Hah, like a sales pitch.
By the way, even though the X block 400s that I used for my engines were very low mileage blocks they too required almost .024” decking to square off, so I cannot imagine what the standard blocks tweaked to .
