  • Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, duc de Chartres, and later on duc d'Orléans, also known as Philippe d'Orléans and Philippe Égalité after 1792, was a French prince of the blood born at the Château de Saint-Cloud on 13 April 1747. He was guillotined in Paris on 6 November 1793. He was the father of the French king Louis-Philippe I.
    Son of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans and Louise-Henriette de Bourbon, Princess of the Blood, he was titled Duke of Montpensier at his birth in 1747 and then, on the death of his grandfather, Louis, Duke of Orléans, he was given the title of Duke of Chartres. He descended in the male line from the regent Philippe II d'Orléans and King Louis XIII, but also from King Louis XIV through Françoise-Marie de Bourbon, the wife of the regent and legitimate daughter of Louis XIV and the Marquise de Montespan.
    Louis Philippe has become infamous due to his vote in favour of the execution of his cousin King Louis XVI.

    I have never ever been a fan of Orléans as a whole. These are people who betrayed the King when he needed them the most. He should have supported the king. I felt bad for most of the people who were killed during the revolution except Louis Phillipe and Robespierre. He might have thought he could have the throne for himself if the King was executed/ deposed off. But karma came in at the right time and served him a hot dish.
    A great video as always. 👏👏

    The video was perfect and beautifully done but Louis Philippe II is one of my least favorite French royals. The way he voted against his own cousin has always bothered me. There was a spot where you showed a portrait of a lady, then next to it a letter she had written. That really brought her to life for me. She suddenly looked so real.

    Fun fact, his son, the one who became king, didn't just marry a princess of Naples-Sicily, he married a princess of Naples-Sicily who happened to be the niece of Marie Antoinette, the daughter of her closest sister Maria Carolina. Needless to say that Maria Carolina had some strong reservations about her daughter marrying the son of the man she held responsible for the downfall of her sister's family and their eventual deaths, and both Louis Philippe and Maria Amalia went to bat hard for the match even though it was controversial (if I remember correctly, he had a sit down conversation with Maria Carolina where he apologized for his dad's actions and promised to answer any questions she had about him, and Maria Amalia just straight up told her dad she'd join a nunnery if he didn't agree to the marriage).
    Other fun facts include that his other sons also died as a result fo tuberculosis they acquired while in prison for Louis Philippe's defection (which I imagine has to be a bit traumatizing, to be technically responsible for the deaths of three of your family members), and while in exile the three sons went to America for a bit and actually met a lot of our founding fathers, including Hamilton. For how interesting Égalité was, his son really had an equally interesting life himself.

    I have a question about history and I do not know the answer. It doesn't have to do with this royal. This has to do with Queen Elizabeth the first. I would like to know exactly what she was buried in. Was she wearing any jewelry? Like a crown? What dress was she wearing? I've looked and looked and have googled but there's no answer. Can you please make a video on this. I want to know more about what royalty is buried with. Like crowns and treasures and stuff like that. Like if we will go to the church and open up her coffin. What would we see? I did some reading and I think you can see the E.R on the coffin. Because it was opened in the Victorian times or something like that. But if you could help that would be awesome!! I love history and this channel!

    Well, that seems like a _very_ unfair execution, but yeah, as you say, suspicion was enough, unfortunately. That's so brilliant about the smallpox vaccination tho- wow! I think Catherine the Great of Russia did something similar?
    0:21 OMG, is that meant to be a cat in his lap? I've never ever seen a portrait of a royal or noble with a cat, or heard of them owning one- I don't think they were popular as pets, but if this _is_ a cat, I highly approve!

    • @beth7935
      @beth7935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @A W Oh yeah, I know pets in general were popular, & I've certainly seen loads of portraits with _other_ pet animals- I love the one of Margaret Tudor with a little monkey- but never a cat. I don't think cats were really a "posh person pet" til more recently- probably more hanging around catching mice & rats, & scamming milk & scraps. That's brilliant about Maria Theresa! She can go on my "historical people who did awesome stuff" list with the others.

      @beth7935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @A W Aww, how lovely! I've never heard of a cat-loving king, but of course I'm a Louis XV fan now! I didn't know longhairs reached France & England that early, or that they were at Versailles, but "grey angora cats walking over the gaming tables" is such a beautiful & magical image, it makes Versailles seem more beautiful in my mind- & it's so typical of cats, lol. It's so cool that it's known he had a white Persian cat, so it might be the one in this painting! It looks like a shorthair, but then it's not exactly photorealism, so who knows. I do think there were kitchen cats in Tudor & Mediaeval England, & farm cats etc, but not so much as pampered indoor pets for rich people. I like hearing about exceptions tho, like an Irish monk who wrote a beautiful little poem about his cat in the margins of a manuscript he was copying (& from the name, "Pangur Ban", where "Ban" means "white", probably also a white cat!)

    I have been told the story of Mme du Pompidou that on the day of her execution, she did not go stoicly, but begging for her life. The normal cheering and jeers of the crowd was replaced with silence and the occasional gasps of horror. I was told that this was when the Revolution saw that the far-reaching guillotine had overstepped and beheaded an innocent. This lead to doubt and the eventually fall of the Revolution.
    Is this anywhere near being correct or is it just a good story?

      Du Barry made it out to England safely, but she was greedy and after a while, went back to France to claim some jewelry gifted to her. She was arrested, tried and executed, mostly for her own stupidity. Mme du Pompadour is the one that I am talking about, the 1st mistress of the previous king. After she fell out of favor, she used her money for charitable reasons to the point where she was recognized for being generous and empathic to the people.
