    Another wonderful addition to these excellent primers on French History. I always thought the Restoration of Louis XVIII a poisoned chalice of high expectation, and a political puzzle far beyond the ability of even the strongest & cleverest of leaders to solve, but duty demanded that the sickly second son stand in the ruins of Royalty and do something to restore the Glory of France.
    Almost thirty years of Revolutionary War & Intercontinental Conquest (The Battle of the Nile et al) had left France in the worst of conditions, following the flight from Russia, and to try to summon back the Ancient Regime was a hopeless cause but, as I understand it, Louis XVIII did attempt to mediate something of a settlement to the matter of the property lost to the ruling class; who had not realised themselves that the France they knew was now gone.
    I never thought Louis XVIII weak for leaving when news reached him that Ney had defected to Napoleon, the King couldn`t hope to continue to serve his people if he was guillotined like his brother; King Haakon of Norway left for Britain as did Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands when the Nazis marched in to their countries and took effective control, and they weren`t thought any worse for it. But perhaps history would have been kinder to Louis XVIII if his second Restoration wasn`t likened to: "...arriving in France amongst the Allies` luggage..." following the Battle of Waterloo.
    I have always been reluctant to believe that supposedly contemporary account of the King being put back on the Throne by the Allies, and so I am pleased that you have stated clearly that his return to Paris was celebrated; I think your relating of historical events much more reliable than the opinion of my old history teachers who taught me this subject 25 years ago.
    Thank you again and I look forward to your next video as indeed I look forward to every Saturday when you post.

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Louis XVIII and the restoration. Personally I believe that the Kings placed on the throne after the restoration (both Louis, Charles and eventually Louis Philippe) failed because they were unable to find a balance between the republic minded part of the population and the royalists. As they were products of the Ancien Régime I feel the cards were stocked against them from the get-go, as they were born and raised on the principle of absolutism and didn't know how to deal with a nation in motion as France was at the time. The restoration partly feels like a missed opportunity, but then again, I think it couldn't have been any other was as they were products of their time.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting !

      @@TheKingsofFrance Agreed; how could they - Louis, Charles & Louis Philippe - hope to be anything other that what they were born and bred to be. And the controversy of the biens nationaux is [still] an issue in some parts of France, as I understand it, some families still won`t receive those who ancestors are known to have bought confiscated properties.
      Every time you post a video I spend at least a couple of hours reading around the subject you discuss and my understanding of French history expands as does my appreciation of your politics in France today because the Revolution and its subsequent Republics, Restorations and Empires still characterise your political complexion centuries later.
      Indeed Britain is much the same with old rivalries among the old Kingdoms beginning to surface once more now that a imbecilic albino buffoon (I absolutely detest Boris Johnson if you haven`t already guessed) has been elected to high office and is ruining our domestic Union as much as he hoped to sow dissention inside the European Union with self-serving Party politics and corrosive nationalism.

      @@Kian2002, Towards the end of Queen Elizabeth ll's long, we now see a Catholic Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) and he happens to be there when America has their first Catholic President (Joe Biden) since John F. Kennedy. I can't see Prince Charles upholding and giving The Church of England strength if he should ever reign. A Government Republic is more likely to see that every one is fed and housed. There really needs to be limitations set for Kings and Queens who are meant to be the God aspect of Churches, we shouldn't see them soaking up all resources.

I am American so I knew very little of this period of France until I became so interested in Marie Antoinette. I try my best... as you say, probably here and there there are tiny mistakes, but in general I do attempt to put out quality videos which introduce the royals to an audience that might not know too much about them. These videos obviously aren't made for historians, but for beginners to get a bit of a grasp on the lives of these Royals.

    Louis XVIII was just the king needed in 1815, after the horrors of the revolution and the tumults of the Napoleonic period. He guided the French state to normalcy and soothed the mangled nerves of the French people.

    Funny story about Louis XVIII. When he was in exile, since 1801 for a few years he lived in the Baths Palace in Warsaw, which was back then controlled by the Prussians. When he move in there, the local authorities prepared a welcoming and wanted to play some patriotic French music for the occasion. They played... La Marseillaise. Talk about faux pas....

    This video was amazing! I have an unralated quesiton: What is the title of the third son/second brother of the King.
    Like, Louis XIV's brother was Duc d'Orléans. Because that was the tradicional title of the second son, but imagine if they had another brother/or the king had a third son.
    My guess is Duc d'Alençon or Duc d'Angoulême?

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not all brothers of the king became the Duc D'Orléans. When Philippe and la Palatine had a son who had his own offspring, the Orléans title stopped being given to the brother of the dauphin, but was inherited by the first born son of the couple. The reason why Philippe D'Orleans received the title was because Gaston D'Orléans had no offspring to pass the title on to. Hence I think titles were distributed taking into consideration lands and properties available at the time of a royal birth, or they were given after a certain bloodline died out. I'd have to look this up though !
