- Byakuya Kuchiki is the noble head of the Kuchiki family, along with holding the title of Captain of the 6th division. He is one of the most stoic and reserved characters to feature within Bleach, but during this video I am going to analyse his character, his relationships with Renji, Rukia, Ichigo and the other cast of Bleach characters to reveal the nuances of his character. Byakuya Kuchiki has several highlights throughout the Bleach series, including his fights with Ichigo, Tsukishima, As Nodt and Gerard, I will be covering the change in his character from one battle to the next.

To me, in that moment, Byakuya showed more devotion to Ichigo than Orihime did. I was wondering why was she fighting Ichigo, because of Tsukishima, even though she was supposed to be in love with Ichigo. Isn't love much stronger than her "friendship" with Tsukishima?

When he first reveals his Bankai Ichigo legit could have taken his head. He showed Byakuya in that moment that he doesn't intent to kill anyone who doesn't truly deserve it, that he's fighting for the right cause.
I think it's more of a loyalty in battle kind of thing, but you do bring up a good point. Why was Byakuya the only one who didn't turn, doesn't Ichigo have amazing bonds with all of his friends? Plothole or meaningful? Who knows.

You missed a small but significant Byakuya moment. After Orihime was captured, Byakuya comes to collect Rukia and Renji from the real world. After that, he allows them to go to Hueco Mundo and outfits them with cloaks. His roundabout reason was that he was ordered to bring them back the first time but not what to do with them Afterwards.
His logic was undeniable .
It was unexpected yet fully heartwarming . Left me smiling ,like a sibling who knows they are loved .
Obeying the letter of the law. Always loved that little scene.

From a psychological stance, early Byakuya could be stuck in a period of extreme grief. He lost his wife that he moved mountains to marry, when you put so much into something(especially your wife, your love) and lose it all it can effect personality and manifest as depression for years. After her death he once again expelled effort to find Rukia, this caused stress on his family side and it is not easy or comfortable to look upon someone who looks like your dead wife. This may have caused him to stay away from Rukia, because it will bring up those old emotions, the old memories, remembering the happiest day of your life and then realizing it will never be again burns deep. He was trained all his life in the business of his family but never about emotional coping. His depression caused him to focus it all in, h tunes out all emotion, what is the point of caring for things when you lose it anyway. But, he perservered, and grew as a person in the end.
Byakuya and Ichigo's relationship also becomes a lot more interesting when you realize they are both members of noble families
I think part of what drove Byakuya to act so arrogant in the Soul Society arc isn't talked about or considered enough; I think he was actually trying to protect himself emotionally. He was obviously a very caring person. He cared about his wife enough to marry her against the family's wishes and honor, and to adopt Rukia to fulfill his promise to her. He obviously cared about his parents greatly, and was ashamed that his selfish love for his wife wounded them and therefore swore on their grave to uphold the law and honor from that point forward. On its own, that doesn't explain why he treated Renji with such contempt and suddenly changed, but I'll go back to what I started with and say it was to protect himself.
Having lost the people in his life he cared about the most and throwing away the law and honor because of that love, he was afraid of becoming close to anyone again. He didn't want to look at Rukia because it reminded him of his wife, and he knew that if he connected emotionally with his subordinates, even his lieutenant, it might weaken his resolve to uphold the law. HIs fears became justified--when Rukia was condemned to death, his emotions were again on the line and he was about to lose the last thing his beloved wife wanted him to protect. It was much easier for him to hide behind the 'pride' and 'honor' of the Kuchiki house and treat them with contempt. But when Ichigo defeated him and defiantly declared that he would never uphold the law or pride or honor if it meant the death of his own loved ones, Byakuya was reawakened to that past version of himself. I have always found it interesting that Byakuya thought of the same man, Kaien Shiba, that Rukia did, even though no where in the manga or anime does it really show that the two had any kind of relationship. I would like to think that Kaien, head of the Shiba household, lectured Byakuya about the same ideals of placing those you care about above the rules, as only another head of a noble house could do. He was remembering those words, specifically, as Ichigo lectured him on fighting the law, and he realized that his rigid devotion was destroying not only the things he cared about or should have cared about, but his ability to experience personal happiness, since he had withdrawn himself into a cocoon of 'upholder of the law' to make sure he would honor his vows.
I've always had a soft spot for villains or antagonists who undergo a transformation and become an important ally, and have a particular weakness, for whatever reason, for the 'tsundere' types who won't admit to changing or having those reawakened sentiments, and Byakuya is one of the most masterfully handled versions of this character archetype in all of manga.

He was conflicted. He made a promise to uphold all rules to his parents that died and said he would never break any more rules after the one he did. Then his wife who he broke a rule for ended up dieing and he made a promise to her to protect Rukia no matter what.
Once Rukia was put in a position where she would be executed, he acted like he didn’t care with no concern. Another Captain was mad at him for acting so nonchalant about her.
In that situation, he was conflicted, but couldn’t show it because of how he felt. He didn’t want his feelings to get in the way again and decided to let Rukia be executed and keep the promise to his parents.
Once his ideals were challenged by Ichigo, he turned back into the guy he used to be before his promise to his parents.
Thing with Byakua is that he didn’t have any character development. Instead he changed because of an event and was more reawakened. He reverted back to how he used to be.

1st of all, what a mesmerizing thumbnail! It gives me ”noble” vibes, fitting of byakuya!
2nd, byakuya is my favorite captain after his filler fight against koga. The senkei animation, ”massacre scene”, was absolutely beautiful. It was like a ufotable animation or something. The sound design as well for each blade forming the ”arena” was ON FREAKING POINT! Love that scene

Byakuya's defeat and him asking Ichigo to save the Soul Society is the TYBW moment I wanna see animated the most. I can hear the music whenever I think about it
Can anyone tell me what is bad about tybw arc? Bleach fans are one of the most unsupportive fans, They complain for everything first they complained there is no character development and chad, orihime, uryu dont get wins so authur made fullbringer arc for that but the fans complained it is boring and Asked his to bring. Captain. The next time kubo made a action packed arc and they still hated it, Fans complained characters dont die when it was fan's own fault they dont die, They complain when a character dies and doesn't die. The only ”bad” thing about the TYBW is it ended too soon. Other than that, its contested to be the best arc in bleach, or at least on par of soul society arc

I am glad that Byakuya didn't actually die because he is one of my favourite characters however the way it was written and where his story was at that point I could understand why it would make sense for him to die at the point and wouldn't have minded if that was route Kubo went. But also not mad we got to see more of Byakuya, I really loved the scene of him praising Rukia's bankai.
Not gonna lie, I teared up after Byakuya lost to As Nodt the first time they squared off and also when he told Rukia that she'd gotten stronger.
I still wonder why he never used Hado or Bakudo in that battle? I’m sure he could’ve blocked most of the attacks with them at least I feel like he went out too easy I understand the power of Bankai but he’s captain level it’s been demonstrated that he is able to do more without bankai

@@kakashihatake6052 It’s all dependent on a soul repears spiritual pressure. Yamamoto has crazy SP so he can simply use Hado to block off a nuke like how he did in the Kageroza Arc. He didn’t even use incantation. Buyakuya is a noble, he will have high SP than the average Captain you know. He should be able to use Bakudo or other types of Hado and Bakudo before he went down even if it didn’t do anything it would make sense for someone to be desperate enough to defend than be massacred is my point. He could’ve also used his Shikai even tho it’s obviously weaker and has less petals and power he could’ve also mixed that as a shield to some degree before he got defeated

Young Byakuya reminds me a lot of Hitsugaya in terms of personality, and even his relationship with Yoruichi back then has some shades of Hitsugaya's with Rangiku.
As for Byakuya surviving As Nodt's attack, I am in the minority who is actually ok with the outcome with got. Kubo drew a lot of inspiration from my favorite manga, Saint Seiya, and the relationship between Byakuya and Rukia takes a lot of cues from the one between Phoenix Ikki and Andromeda Shun from that series. However, the original Saint Seiya ended without the older brother acknowledging the younger sibling's strength and growth, so seeing Byakuya doing just so with Rukia during the latter half of the TYBW arc actually meant a lot to me.

It’s interesting how Byakuya truly embodies the ideology of what “law” is. Throughout the Soul Society arc, Byakuya never shows any emotion, never seems to care for anything or anyone, unless said thing effects the written laws of the soul society. And when something breaks the law, Byakuya seems to believe that whatever punishment that’s given is justified.
I feel like this is a great way to show what laws look like in real life. There are many things that could be considered “against the law,” but due to peoples somewhat good and compassionate judgement, not all illegal acts are given the same treatment.
Love the lessons people can learn from series’ like these
Probably one of the most unique characters Kubo has ever written.
Byakuya had more loyalty towards Ichigo than Orihime & Chad under Tsukishima's "Book of the End".
A Noble and unique character in the series of chaotic people is always soothing.
I still feel the EMOTIONS that his fights with Ichigo, Renji and Tsukishima had. As nodt was infact his ultimate test.
BYAKUYA IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A 'PIONEER' FOR FUTURE CHARACTERS LIKE HIM HIS IMPACT WAS JUST 'BREATHTAKING'
Everybody rants about how byakuya should have died after his fight with as nodt , but I'm irritated at the way as nodt stole byakuya bankai , byakuya and other captains did a very reckless and out of character move , where they activate their bankai when they already know that the bankai can be neutralized, byakuya is to SMART to Do something so reckless, it feels like kubo made byakuya act out of character so he could kill him off.

Its not out of character, they were fighting enemies with unknown abilities. It was reckless, but it did stop others from having their bankais stolen. Now, renji about to use his bankai after seeing byakuya’s taken. That was stupid

He states he was going to use his bankai and get it purposefully sealed and then he wanted renji to use his bankai to beat as nodt. Byakuya knows he has one of the strongest bankais and he said before that renji's bankai is not battle ready. It never made sense to me that byakuya would willingly get his bankai sealed away. Then fight with renji's waeak bankai.

Is it me or does Byakuya Kuchiki Resembles Sesshomaru from Inuyasha. As far as demeanor, calm vibes, warrior instincts & hatred towards a sibling. Both characters where real threats in the early part of a show. Both had bad guy vibes until badder guys arrived in latter episodes. Both got real strong pride & puts that before anything. Sesshomaru as a demon has a heart for a young girl rin. Byakuya same thing for Rukia. Starts of with assassin like shonen vibes. But now you don't know if its pride or the person who comes first?

@@TheBlackMangaArtist1 That's a very good pick. Infact thats probably closes character on there level. Only thing though. With Itatchi & Sasuke its the opposite. Its the lil brother who has the hatred. Itatchi slaughtered his clan for his brother sake. That's Somthn Sesshomaru or Byakua wouldn't do even for a relative. Plus Itachi never had a follower like Rin or Rukia. Even Kenpachi has yachiru, Accelerator has last order.
Byakuya has always been my favorite character since I was young due to his character development and his gorgeousness.
I didn't realize that his" death" caused such a big controversy at the time. No one will want their favorite character to die, but I do agree that his death might make the final arc more impactful.

I really like Byakuya and think he should have survived. Yeah I get people's points about him dying but I'm against killing characters if they have.more worth alive, and Byakuya helping Renji and Rukia, plus his part in fighting Gerard are far more valuable to me than anything his death could give.
I agree , people were so annoyed by the fact that he survived to the point where they think everything byakuya did afterwards was insignificant. But that’s completely wrong. Hopefully when the anime comes back they get a better view on byakuya’s role in the tybw arc after his first encounter with as nodt
The main person I think Kubo should have let die was Kira, Hiyuri, or Momo. Or maybe all three.
Byakuya surviving I don't mind as much because of his immense spiritual energy and the sheer lengths that had to be taken to revive him. And that scene where he finally acknowledges Rukia was amazing. That scene alone made his survival worthwhile for me

same. he's my #1 favorite character and i was literally in tears when i thought he died. was waiting 2 weeks (kubo was sick) for confirmation. so glad he survived. Yes, killing him off would have been dramatic but would it have been necessary? I don't think so. He's the head of the kuchiki clan after all.
His biggest flaw is/was his following to tradition even if it hurts those around him and he was being manipulated. Still, him snapping back to his senses and saving Rukia's life several times makes him quite the badass brother and his abilities only add to it all. Him also tolerating Ichigo's bending of the rules for what's good is also great development.
His family always preached Traditon and rules. He broke the rules by marrying a commoner. He always placed loved ones above the law, but felt that he let his parents down once they died and made a promise to them and turned into the person they wanted him to be the entire time.
After the Rukia incident with Ichigo, he reverted back to how he was before the promise
A reawakening is what I called it. Ichigo snapped him back to who he really is and made him come to his senses
*Some other guy said he acted that way to protect his own feelings. Always cared, but couldn’t show it because of his own resolution after his parents death. Only thing is that he never stopped being that way, but he did go back to his old ideals and views

Byakuya’s character arc is easily one of the best in Bleach. Plus, most of his fights are among the best in series. Excellent video as always!
........Byakuya is a real boy scout among the Gotei 13 and one of the most loyal of em all........perhaps before Rukia's execution, though he won't show it, silently suffering cognitive dissonance he must be feeling tortured mentally between trying to keep his promise to his long lost wife and fulfilling his duties as captain and head of his clan........
Would love to know what Byakuya and Azien would have been like in battle or just what a relationship between them as Captains would have been like. And yes he is one of the best characters in bleach. Him and Aizen are my favorites.

Though what suprises me the most is that no one is mentioning that after Yawch's death Byakuya (out of pocket) has made ALL preparations for Rukia and Renji's wedding with no one other than the captain's being the wiser. THAT is a perfect send off for his character.
Best Bleach character. The way he calls Ichigo “boy” is the most badass thing ever. Complete stoic chad. His character design is also A1.
You know, this might be random, but the amount of work and effort that goes into your videos is seriously commendable. In the plethora of youtube videos, I feel like the whole researching, scripting, and editing process really can get underlooked. As someone who aspires to get into Anitube, I'm only now starting to understand how much effort it takes. Like bro, just being able to explain and really go into depth into the topics you decide to tackle and thoroughly do it justice is amazing. I can barely write a script that lasts 15 mins, but you create lengthy, well thought out, well-edited videos on basically a weekly basis. I came across your channel through your bleach documentary (like many others) and have only come to love your channel more since. Seriously man your videos are such a treat. Keep doing what you doing cause what you put out is quality.
Byakuya was never dislikeable for me in the Soul Society Arc, he was just a cool savage. He might be my fav Captain after Kenpachi

Byakuya could have kept both promises.
If he had tried to object to the severity of Rukia's punishment for a relatively minor offence and work to protect his sister within the law, then he could honour both sides of his family.
That may have worked, but Rukia’s offense was a life or death one. It wasn’t a petty offense.
Either he rebeled like the other captains did or he sided with what was said.
*Another guy described it as traditional laws against liberal captains that didn’t see it as ethical for a punishment being that cruel
A massive respect for Byakuya when he fights the number 7 Espada (not a manga reader). I hated his character, his arrogance and his pride. But when he battles the Espada, he shows that he cares for Rukia. He is a fast thinker and not afraid to take risk for the sake of his love ones.
You really couldn’t see past that? He cared too much in my opinion. Cared too much about the people he had any connections to. That’s why he suppressed his emotions so much.
Sometimes he would say something, but do another thing. Kinda obvious he cared, but only showed it through what he did. All he has left is Rukia and risked it all according to the manga
This was a wonderful analysis, but I'm kind of surprised you didn't bring up anything about his fight with Koga! I know that it was a filler, but it brilliantly supported Byakuyas's character with the general theme of "following his pride".
But Byakuya is easily one of my favorite chatacters in the whole series, as he is definitely one of the best written!
I still disagree with the idea that Byakuya should of died. Instead my criticism is directed at how his character was executed in the TYBW arc in terms of battle growth. But then again Kubo was on a time crunch 🤷

Tite Kubo is a master at subversion. He does it with so many other characters. He's a brilliant at crafting unique characters.
with Byakuga I always think he's been compensating for not rescuing Rukia at the beginning. Now he goes out of his way to show that he does care about her. He also rescues her in the Bount filler arc. He was probably so intent on killing Ichigo because he perceived that Ichigo was the one to hurt Rukia and get her into trouble. Not surprising at all. It makes me wonder if Byakuya found out that Ichigo is a Shiba. Another great clan of Soul Society. they are the ones who push against the rules.

Its interesting to see this portrayal of Byakuya Kuchiki as to the Bleach movie. A man bound by duty and honour brought to his knees by a newcomer. It was rewarding to see him lose to Ichigo and learn a thing or two from him. But his growth as a leader and older brother and a Captain of the Gotei 13 is also rewarding in the end.
I like this too, but I was thinking of it being more of a reawakening that Ichigo made him go through.

Oh yes my Favorite Bankai user, each of his flower pedals are as sharp as steel katana's so his clearly very deadly. he was able to keep up with Ichigo's Bankai form with just his Shikai which is quite impressive.

My favorite Byakuya moment in early Bleach has to be when Hanataro goes to face him by himself to give Ganjo and Rukia time to escape. I love it because Hanataro name means flower that goes to face the guy who is known for 1000 of Sakura petals flowers scatters and kills everything in its path. Hanataro who is nothing but a kind soul that only wants to help and who doesnt deserve any pain or death. The moment when Ganjo step to switch place with him was glorious for me coz I couldn't bare to see Hanataro suffer the same pain as Ganjo went through. And I think it had made Byakuya feel very bad and for his character. The guy who always talks about sakura flowers and petels that is his most pride, killing an innocent flower who willing to sacrifice himself for his friends sake. I think its a beautiful thing and Im glad Ganjo switched place with Hanataro as he did. Really epic bleach moment for me.

Great character analysis video for one of my favorite characters. Byakuya definitely grew on me towards the end of the soul society arc. And I loved the moment when he finally acknowledges Rukia that she has become strong.
One thing I always found interesting was the evolution of Senbonzakura along with Byakuya's character in the last arc. In the beginning it was an overwhelming offensive force which also provided him with great defense and that's all he did with it. In the last arc he actually uses the newly reformed SZ to protect Rukia and Renji.

Byakuya really does have a sort of ichigo/Kisuke like ability to analyze the battle and change or create new tactics to beat an enemy if he can’t outright win the fight. When he fights the guy with the book it’s on full display; he doesn’t even have bankai and dude knows and can use all of byakuya’s techniques so he comes up with a new plan on the spot to win. I love his character, he really did change a lot as you said.

Byakuya being my most beloved bleach character it made heartbroken to think he died. It affected me way more than I thought so I was elated to hear he was alive. I absolutely understand had it been his death it was a fitting ending... Glad he wasn't tho just cause I love him so much.

Really good video, I was a bit shocked that you didn't bring up the famous character poem. Especially in the case of Byakuya whose character poem really convey the way he thinks and therefore act. I'm glad that you started this series before watching it I had dropped my re-reading but I think I'm making time to re-read all the manga thanks to you and the unique storytelling of master Kubo

he explained to Ichigo why Rukia, Renji and Ishida stayed in Hell in order to help Ichigo escape with Yuzu, where he later eventually help him break through the gate in order to save them. That was the moment when I was suprised and realized how he respect Ichigo and care about the others.

Random Fact:
Byakuya was, originally, supposed to die for good during the first Quincy invasion. Tite Kubo revived Byakuya due to toxic fans harassed, berated, and even sent him death threats.
Byakuya is my favorite character and he definitely shouldn’t have died, but F**K those crazy fans who did that to poor Kubo. He didn’t deserve any of that negative backlash.

aaaaa my fave character! i remember my 14 year old self dying inside when byakuya was on the verge of death after his battle with as nodt..
