These specialized "carts" have articulating remote control axles. Some are controlled by the driver in the cab - but many are operated by a passenger in the following pilot car. It's quite an operation. There is training/certification involved.

Andrew Keller it's funny you ask that because yes. A coworker went to process out of the RCA and when he put his dosimeter in the computer, he lost 33 mrem from his yearly allotted dose all in one night. We know for a fact he didn't catch more than 0.2 mrem in that night. So definitely a glitch

The container is lead and concrete. The actual cargo space is not very large. They have seriously upgraded the trucks though. Last time I saw one up close, it was 100,000 lbs on a 24 wheel trailer.
It said on the side of the container that it was 333,00 pounds. I'd say it's an appropriate size considering that is well over 3 times the weight of a regular loaded tractor trailer.

Additional information on this. This is transport ID WVDP-TC-471. West Valley Demonstration plant, in west virginia. a Fuel reporcessing test plant. so that was either ' going to the Nevada test site to offload low level waste, or heading back to the site to pick up more.
I saw one of these DOE rigs go through Lodi,Ca. once. I was nearly run of the road by DOE pickups with men inside with ARs visible through the pickups windows. Ca. Highway patrol motorcycles and cars with DOE vehicles took turns leapfrog to block the intersections as the rig went down the middle of the two lane hwy 12. It never stopped as the law enforcement blocked all intersections. Must have been 30 vehicle convoy
