"Not you" is the best bit. Shows how much Will trusts & respects Sean.

You can literally see their relationship growing when Robin starts calling him chief, then Will and finally son. Truly remarkable.

What a beautiful reaction. I’m a retired therapist, and KNOW this stuff. And still gaslit myself my whole life. It’s only been the last few months in therapy that I’ve actually understood and BELIEVED it wasn’t my fault. It is freeing in a way I can not describe to finally believe e what you may have already known intellectually.

It kills me that Will's first instinct *after* breaking down and crying is to apologize, even though he's come to realize that it's not his fault.

Whenever I see this scene it always strikes me that Robin Williams can smile with only his eyes better than anyone I have ever seen. He deserved better than the end of his life.

Well, Skylar is essentially emotionally abusing him here, trying to shame him about not being comfortable leaving the one place he's known all his life and gaslighting him by pretending consequences for them are anywhere as near if the relationship doesn't work out (she still has her position at Stanford and he's a complete fish out of water in that scenario).

Underrated scene is by Cristian bale. It brings me to tears everytime. The movie is called Equilibrium. It's the scene where he wakes up because he can actually feel the rays of sunshine piercing through the cracks in the window. The desperation he portrays while ripping the shade from the window is phenomenal acting.

I miss Robin so much. Still the only celebrity death that actually made me feel sick to my stomach like I knew the man on a personal level. He brought me great happiness and I think what kills me most is the understanding he wasn't on the same level.

This scene always broke me because it felt so real to my own personal life. Grew up in a controlling environment, which was very toxic. I didn't think I was good enough for my family as a young kid, which led to trauma and deeper mental health. Thank you for sharing this it definitely awakened something in me. ❤

This scene broke me. im going through my own struggles with my mother they put me through hell and they damaged me in ways that i'll never come back from mentally every day what i went through haunts me and i got out of there 4 years ago so when Robin was saying "it's not your fault" my mind went straight back too when i first sought help and i broke down.

What Sean did as a therapist was daring and showed real commitment. Afaik, and from personal experience, a therapist will push to a certain point, and then a bit further, and then stop before provoking anger at the process. I was once doing a visualization exercise with my therapist and she pushed a little, then a little more, and I resisted. She saw I was on the verge of anger and rejecting the exercise but, unusually, pressed harder. I then had one of the most deep and pivotal insights of my life. She could see something very important was ready to break through the surface. It takes a really good therapist to know the right moment to push harder like Sean did here.

I had a therapist tell me it wasn’t my fault when talking about growing up under my stepdad and I completely broke. It’s not your fault are such powerful words. I was able to make amends with him and we had a great relationship until his passing in 2021.

Good stuff Keilani, So glad you discussed this one. Staying on the Robin Williams theme I think Dead Poets Society fits the bill and would be worth a reaction as well. After the suicide toward the end of the movie, Robin's character and the other students react and deal with it in different ways. Also, several of the cast members noted how they could see signs of Robin's own mental struggles that continued until his own death. We miss him. RIP Captain my Captain.

One of my favourite movies is We Bought a Zoo, also starring Matt Damon. If you haven't seen it I would highly reccomend it! It's about a family grieving after the loss of the mom. Matt Damon's character and the kids all greive differently and it's really cool to see how they grow through the movie and learn to live with their feelings.

The Fresh Prince of Bell Air has a scene that's popular with the "try not to cry" crowd. Will's father walks out again, and Uncle Phil tries to console him.
Another powerful scene that was popular when the movie came out was the rant at the end of The 25th Hour. One part of Edward Norton's character tries to blame everyone else for what is wrong with the world, but he realizes that he is reason for all of his problems.

Fantastic, emotional and impactful scene dealing with childhood trauma. Robin Williams is golden. "It's not your fault" line is so powerful. For example, A Must watch depiction of childhood trauma out of all places is 'ARCANE" and what happens to Powder. She needed someone to tell her "it's not her fault", since her whole character is based on the trauma she endured due to not only losing her parents but also an accident she did not intend to happen. She never got over the guilt and it tortured her mental state because of it. Jinx needed just like Will A Hug and someone to tell her "it's not your fault"

I've only seen this movie a couple of times, but this scene always hits home. I came from an extremely spiritually, mentally, and emotionally abusive home, to the point I rebelled and got involved with a porn addiction and a 5-year adulterous affair. It was by God's grace that I was able to start healing, but it was also being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2013 that helped me realize I wasn't purposely insane or delusional.

Before there was Good Will Hunting, there was 1980's Oscar-winning best picture, Ordinary People. Robert Redford's directing debut. Judd Hirsch plays the therapist and Timothy Hutton the troubled teen. It is too good a movie to miss.

I'm 56, this scene gets me since the 1st time I saw it back in the days. At first, I did not want to know why, it was a bit scary. Years later, somehow it haunted me. After the death of my parents (2 years between them) a couples of years ago, I kind of question myself and asked questions to my 2 big sisters, I m a loner and not really connected with my bigger sisters. I wish I didn t. I was better not aware and with my own personal story. I did not realise I had burried some shit as a survival mechanism probably. I was thinking it had no influence on me, but I was wrong.

Suggestions? Jarhead (2005) is a story of US marine snipers during Operation Desert Storm. Portrayed by Jake Gyllenhall and Peter Skarsgard. The men have trained and dedicated and sacrificed themselves to one thing... the bloody red mist of a headshot. In the finale, for one marine who is consumed by his cause, he is authorized to take the shot. At the last second it is revoked and the Air Force will drop a bomb instead. He regressed to a child-like state screaming and crying as he moves through the 5 stages of grief. It's really great acting. The cinematography of the film is so incredible that virtually every scene is a painting. For what it's worth... there is no combat or killing in this war movie... only the psychologically trying experiences of the troops.

The Green Mile, oddly enough, is one of my favorite movies of all time. Many emotional moments in this one, but the scene between Tom Hanks and Michael Clark Duncan when Paul asks Cofffey what he wants him to do feels on par with this scene from GWH. Not a therapy situation, but one of the best acted scenes I ever witnessed and highly impactful.

I didn't have the choice of a wrench. I got the 2x4. If I moved and it hit my neck or legs, that was my fault. If the canteen belt wrapped around and hit my chest because I moved from the pain, that was my fault. I went to stay with another family for a year and they used paintball guns from 15 feet until you stopped moving. Any movement was my fault. I went from owning a home to living in a tent in my boss's back yard, where my spine would be crushed by a 2 ton tree limb, where I would be mocked and laughed at out-loud by my birth parents. It was my fault for walking away from the house in the name of love. The one I loved abandoned me as I slept in a parking garage for 3 years. It was my fault for continuing to love them. I'm 42 with a gift for programming and small robotics and I've never had anything but minimum wage jobs and the disrespect and dismissal of everyone around me. That is my fault. Nearly 4 decades of pain that I have caused to those around me, and I had an NDE, and I changed for a while, but went back to hurting people. That is my fault.
I deserve nothing but the pain I have caused everyone. As a security guard at a hospital once told me, my existence hurts the entire human specie.

A little humorous and brief but Silver Linings Playbook when he throws the book out the window. As someone who has been in over ten psychiatric units and recovered from the trauma I can actually look back and share some of my experiences with some humor involved. I obviously don't down play the situations however I choose to live within my Faith in God and my belief that these present sufferings are temporal in comparison to an eternal future where sorrow no longer exists.

For anyone who has experienced this type of trauma from someone who was supposedly taking care of/loving them, do we really need a higher educated therapist to explain this scene to us?
What you have to remember is, this scene was either written by Matt or Ben or, both of them and to my knowledge, neither one of them has pursued higher, psychological/therapeutic education.
This is not a a dig of nor am I attempting to gaslight Keilani. I’m just saying, if you’ve been through this or something similar when you were young, you really don’t need anybody to explain this scene to you.
Although, I will give Keilani credit for mentioning that not being able to realize it wasn’t (my) fault, on a sub-conscious level, has led me to be alone for a tremendously, significant part of my adult life - is to me, a bit of an epiphany. (Keilani didn’t mention sub-conscious, I threw that in there but, I know that’s what she meant)
Because, I never took the meaning of this scene to the sub-conscious level.
I just thought of it on a basic level, where it wasn’t my fault.
Not necessarily why, that type of treatment allowed me to build walls and not let people through. Or, if I did allow them to slowly permeate the wall, once they were through so far, I immediately pushed them back and shut the door.
    If ya know, ya know.
