Holy cow! 2:35 was my grandfather on cowbell!
He got to keep the bell and my uncle did a video of him restoring it into a headlight cover for his Honda bike.

@CreatureFeatureFred Are you kidding about the 1970s? The 1970s, not jaded or angry or hopeless? You must not have been alive then. Vietnam, the energy crisis, Iran hostages, environmental mess, blackouts, gas shortage, population explosion...you may not remember Carter and the "national malaise" but I do. We were plenty jaded and hopeless back then. In fact I remember the Bicentennial celebrations being rather bleak because the country was such a mess.

At 2:01, perhaps the only Super Bowl half time broadcast mention of "cole slaw" in the illustrious game's history. I think this spectacle was the inspiration for the Simpsons Super Bowl episode half-time show: "People of Earth, we've come millions of miles to bring you this message: One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock rock!...."

A bit corny, yeah. But the choreography was excellent and some people were actually singing. After suffering through some of the recent overhyped and gaudy halftime shows (except for my babe Shakira!) this one is actually refreshing to watch.

@kknotes How did you feel when you first found out that you would be featured in front of millions of television viewers during halftime of Super Bowl X? Did they give you enough time to practice? I noticed that you all sat on bleachers at one endzone. What else do you remember from that day?

Despite many critics' negative reviews of the "Up With People" halftime shows, I think this is a lot of fun to watch, especially having performed in a high school show choir myself for a couple of years. That's basically what this is--a large show choir. IMHO, the Super Bowl halftime show jumped the shark BIG TIME in the early 1990's. A minority opinion, I know, but I definitely prefer these old-school halftime shows from the early years of the Super Bowl.

0:01 It's a good thing Rollen Stewart wasn't behind them; the cops would have a hard time trying to restrain him while seated behind the crew.
Now media types and bloggers are knashing their teeth over whether there will be a halftime show for next year's game in New Jersey. Far as I know, none of these kids would mind dancing and singing in a blizzard. So how about it, NFL? We're getting SICK AND TIRED OF DANCE POP ACTS every year!
UWP cast won't dress provocatively or flip off the camera.

I'm willing to bet after the camera's left Brent Musberger he was pulling out a flask.
I am also willing to bet that this made Pat Summerall's alcoholism worse.

Brings back memories of being a little kid in the 70's. I like that the girls still wore dresses. Today girls dress like guys and have tattoos like them too and it's not feminine at all. Sad

This isn't half bad. They got more lame and cheesy in later Super Bowls. They are at least singing current popular music of the era. I did hate that Up With People theme, however.

I just wish they hadn't ruined it by using the word "damn" during the opening medley. It kind of spoiled it for me, but I'll admit I'm kind of old fashioned. I just don't understand why young people feel the need to use profanity.

I'm torn on this halftime show because from a technical standpoint, it's fine. These people are good singers, the choreography is fine, and there are some songs I like mixed in there (Rock around the Clock, Take Me Home Country Roads, Philadelphia Freedom). However, I think this hits the musical equivalent of the uncanny valley. A big part of my brain is telling me that people this chipper should not be singing these songs. The 1970s seemed defined by a lack of self-awareness and Up with People seemed to be cut from the same mentality that allowed love songs sung by siblings (Donny and Marie Osmond, Richard and Karen Carpenter) to become big hits with no controversy whatsoever. Also, this halftime show seemed to embody the mentality that would eventually evolve into modern Republicanism. I'm willing to guess that most of these performers who aren't dead voted Trump (then again, I've heard that there was a disproportionate amount of gay people in this group).
If you like this, I have no problem with you. There's some quality here. However, just know that popular sensibilities have long since moved on from saccharine stuff like this.

    • @revjaybird2
      @revjaybird2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

"I've heard that there was a disproportionate amount of gay people in this group" Um, yeah, they were. I'm really not sure why it would matter one way or another. It's hilarious that you think a bunch of happy, singing teenagers from the 70s automatically turned into Trump voters 4o years later. You seem deeply upset that people could be happy.

    • @jimjam51075

Since UWP, the Superbowl halftime shows have always been the radio at a muffler shop made manifest.
UWP was the same kind of thing. The teenagers were just a sanitization filter/stand-in for the real people that wrote these songs.
Then they started getting the real people and it was lame for a whole lot of new reasons.
Except for Michael Jackson. He got a 2 minute ovation before he even sang while he just stood in the same pose. I wasn't even a big fan of him in the 80s, but we'll never see another like him.
If UWP were getting 2 minute pose ovations, the Vietnam War would have never ended.

Why use the song Philadelphia Freedom? Simply because it refers to Philadelphia? Admittedly it's a great song but it was written by 2 Englishmen! There is a rich tapestry of American music that could have been used instead and I believe, would have been more honest and real.
