@@sfmc98 A friend of mine called and told me about auditions at SDSU. Radio City had us sign paperwork and then we were given the music and had practice sessions there on campus. We also had a couple of rehearsals at the stadium. It was quite an experience and it opened my eyes as to how these shows are put together.
How they made all the elements come together … 88 grand pianos to jazz band to Rockettes to cheer squad to Chubby Checker to dancing football players… amazing. And Chubby Checker is a great entertainer, all enthusiasm and engaging the fans. It was like watching the Ed Sullivan show on steroids.
CAN WE PLEASE GO BACK TO THIS STYLE OF A HALF TIME SHOW!!!!????? MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE ENTERTAINING THAN WHAT WE HAVE HAD SInce the wardrobe malfunction and not at all tomorrow show will impress. This here though is impressive and entertaining! @nfl
I'm from San Diego and one of my brothers was in college and played trumpet in the band that day. He had a blast. I was so bummed because I couldn't find him when I was watching from my house in Texas!
From the old SB shows this the best I've seen. Great piano players and pro-super big band. The Rockettes. Then you have Chubby Check a major artist performing! Good quality sound on the TV! There was so much going on that it's a shame that the old 4:3 aspect ration didn't do the show justice as all! But that was the tech of that time. Personally I also liked it because I'm a keyboardist and trombonist so it was really great! This was a precursor to the modern halftime show with a main music artist and supporting artists musicians and cast.

I came here looking for a poor halftime show, but tbf this was really good, I never expected it. I think Radio City Music Hall did a great job when they produced the halftime show, a hundred times better than Disney's
Did anybody know that this production has more civil rights significance than anyone cares to remember? While Radio City Music Hall Productions didn't make such a big deal about it, this production was really the first time in its 50-year history that a woman of color (a Jennifer Jones; but her mom was white), integrated the previously all-white Rockettes!! She comes into camera view @ 5:26 mark. So the whole chiaroscuro, black-&-white theme of the pianos was actually MORE SIGNIFICANT and HISTORIC than what RCMH Prods made out!!
We need to go back to halftime shows like this with real music that was fun! Not the lame rap and pop crap we have today. Of course the best Superbowl halftime shows had to occur before my adult years. Consider yourselves fortunate if you were able to witmess those wonderful 80s years live. I mean, Chubby Checker and the Rockettes? They'd never allow that these days.
Maroon 5 was one of the worst halftime shows IMHO. When the lead singer took his shirt off and showed off his heavily tattooed chest, I thought that was in really poor taste.
I always get nostalgic for these old-school halftime shows around Super Bowl time also. I like them much better than the overdone and sometimes tasteless (see my comment about Maroon 5) "extravaganzas" that pass for halftime shows nowadays. The Super Bowl halftime show jumped the shark BIG time in the early 1990's, IMHO.
I've stopped the screen a few times and counted only 80 pianos (36 white and 44 black). Is this another "fake" wherein they say "88" but there are actually less than that? LA 1984 used 84 (+ one white one with the orchestra) for its Opening. Beijing 2008 only had 2006 drummers in its opening sequence -- NOT 2008 as they claim. (When they say "88" pianists, they usually mean there are 8 standby pianists in case of absences.) I wonder how many of the male pianists here also played at the LA 1984 Rhapsody in Blue section?

There are really only 80 pianos - count'em. Like the Olympic shows, they practice this is segments and then put them all together at dress rehearsal and in the final performance.
How did they sync it? The speed of sound would make it so that a pianist on one side of the field would hear the music of the pianist from the other side a bit late
San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium had a massive upgrade for this event. Now it's being abandoned and only utilized for the mediocre-on-their-best-days SDSU Aztecs!!
I was on one of these pianos and it was a blast!

a lot of rehearsals, individually, then by specialty, then 2 days rehearsals on the practice field - the show was the only time in the stadium

Update: They demolished it in 2020 :( theres a really nice brand new stadium in its place though, called the Snapdragon Stadium. -current Aztec :)
