The owner was at home, and repeatedly refused to let his employees leave. The last call to the owner took ten minutes more until he agreed to let them leave. Lawsuit and criminal negligence would be apropos.
Why does the owner have any control over them leaving ? They are not slaves...last time we had a tornado siren at work my boss called to see if I went to the muster point/shelter....I was like yeah, NO! I'm halfway home boss, going to check on my family see you tomorrow. He said ok be safe man...I moved my wife and daughter to a safer structure 10 minutes b4 the tornado passed 1 mile west of our house. Take care of what's really important and let Nothing stop you. They let these clowns have that power and it cost them everything. That is the biggest tragedy, the mindset that let themselves be dictated.
@@metalzhenry This is the worst victim-blaming I've heard in quite some time. Some people do not have the means to just...not go in to work, even in bad weather, because that one day of missed work (or being fired) is one day closer to being unable to afford that month's rent for their families. Risking it all on what, at the time, was still a "maybe"? In this economy? Not everyone can do that. So ALL of the blame should absolutely be on the owners. Not only for this negligence, but for the fact that they didn't tell them to say home in the first place AND also didn't pay their workers enough overall to be able to stay home - no matter what the company dictated.
@@metalzhenry Wow, what an "if you had a gun to the head" commentary. What a nice boss YOU had. Beyond having a responsible boss, you had the wherewithal in a situation that allowed you to follow your priorities. These workers had none of that. Bottom line, the employer has the responsibility for employee safety, including hazardous weather. And I agree with @sharpest... about the work circumstances. You, sir, had it easy. PS Speaking of employer responsibilities, wouldn't blame your boss for firing you for not following company emergency procedures - you put everyone else at risk trying to figure out where you went and what you did.
Impact plastics senior management obviously had some really dumb management at this plant, and I hope they and their insurance carrier pays out millions for their negligence.
I don’t think your insurance pays when you commit a crime, but I’m not sure. If the employees had life insurance, of course that gets paid out, but as far as liability insurance for the company? I think the management and owners are on their own for that.
They didn't keep them. When the power went out, that was when they were told to go home. But by that time, the parking lot and the service road leading to the plant were already under water. Some people in four wheel drive vehicles rammed through the fence along the Interstate and got out that way. People without four wheel drive vehicles had no way to drive out. Some of them broke through a back fence and walked out on the railroad tracks. Others took refuge on a flatbed truck in the parking lot. It didn't go well for the people on the flatbed. But yeah, they should have all been out of there long before that happened.
People died to try and keep a job which never gave a crap about them. Heck, their positions are probably already filled. Your job does not care about you
This is American culture... ALL ABOUT THE MONEY💰! This company and ALL companies should proactively do a few simple things: have at least 1 competent person monitoring the storm 24/7 to understand the severity, practice flood drills UPON HIRING, that way employees know EXACTLY what to do during severe storms, have an EMERGENCY MEETING AREA ON HIGHER GROUND(THE ROOF when possible), determine ahead of time if allowing the employees to stay home for 2-3 days is the best idea. If the storm is a dud, then call mandatory overtime within 1 week to make up lost money and working hours. This is a great case study in profits over empathy; this shows how America has a lack of compassion and smart thinking. This is not just some company in Tennessee, it's emblematic of America, a nation full of greedy, selfish, thugs!
ANYONE here who has worked. You know that the Jobsite has a Duty to Ensure that All Employee's Leave. Emergency Protocols required by Local and State Laws as well as Company Policy needs to be followed. And You DONT have Employee's come to work when No Power is going to be available.
Unfortunately as much as they should, they have no case. Edit: North Carolina is a right to work state. They can fire you for any reason or no reason as long as it doesn't violate civil rights act or protected classes. No one in North Carolina expected it to be anywhere near as bad as it was. They expected some flooding, but no one had any idea the river would overflow by 30 ft. The state has literally never seen flooding like this since white people have been in North America. Residents only had a few minutes to react, because by the time people knew it was happening, it was too late. Impact cosmetics was not the only business that had employees working that day. Impact Cosmetics has absolutely no reasonable expectations for things ending up this bad. By the time they knew the extent of the flooding, they told their employees to go home, but it was already too late, same as it was too late for the hundreds of other people who were swept away from their homes.
Oh yes they do ! That company was fully aware of the situation and they intentionally put their employees in harms way. Employers are responsible for the health and safety of their employees, including protecting them from anticipated hazards during natural disasters.
If your boss doesn't tell you to run for your life and shows no empathy when a situation arises, then do what you know is right and you need to do! Don't wait for people. People are flawed. I'm so sorry they were not supported and people are dead now. How sad. How tragic.

These people are hurting bad and money doesn't replace the last but hopefully it provides a little solace knowing those responsible have paid, even it's a high amount. They should have known better.
This just brings backs memories of Katrina. I was told to report to work the day before the hurricane or I would loose my job. I almost did not make it out. Greed Cost. The fear of not having a job to support your family from these Creedy no good owners cost the everyday people so much with lost of life and grief.
