That is a plus 5 Dreadnought gain versus pushing a already probable belligerent into war. The gain far outweighs any consequences. Plus, as a post- war bonus , you eliminated a good deal of colonial competition. All that oil is waiting for the victors. Just stay away from Galipoli Mr Churchill.
Churchill did his job. Remember, this was the guy that created the SOE, the SAS, MI-5, MI-6 and all the crazy weird and special warfare stuff in WWII. Sneaky dude.
Churchill was a bit of a scoundrel with his dealings with friends and foes alike during his tenure in the Royal Navy and in politics in his later life. The important issue here is that he did what he felt he needed to in view of the fact that a major war would breakout in Europe shortly. Great video! Well done!
Another excellent and informative doco. I hadn't realized Eagle has such an interesting start. And the "mercenary" admiral made me smile. I was particularly impressed by your resolute intention to stay within the scope of the doco and not investigate extraneous matters. Well done you 👍🏽👏🏽
Hindsight is 20/20. At the time Churchill had England's interests priority #1. Selling battleships to hostile countries, the British learned, was not a good idea.
Yes, he thought England was Britain. It isn't, regardless of what people claim. But my favourite of his type is "this country is an island" and in the next breath "Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom". You still hear this rubbish being stated today.
Oh, had to stay awake for almost 1/2 an hour just to hear that theme music! By the way, well done, great content, and great research, almost made wait for the theme worth it! 🤣
it was an interesting video, but i am curious what cruiser was being build for the dutch as the dutch had their own dockyards. no personal insults here, but Agincourt at Jutland fired several full broadsides, something the admiralty was not happy with as they feared the ship was lacking structural support due to the 7 big holes in her decks for the turrets. most of the Royal Navy's "Jutland" ships would be turned into scrap within 10 years after Jutland when the navy had to economize on a level that kept few ships active.
Everyone needs to stop making this about Churchill! If anyone else had been in his position at the time, with the same circumstances, they would have done EXACTLY the same thing.
But it caused a huge outrage in the Ottoman Empire, especially among the populace who had raised the funds for one of them. One or two battleships in the hands of a neutral Turkey hardly mattered. But when the German battle cruiser Goben along with a light cruiser showed up at Istambul and were added to the Ottoman navy the population loved the idea and the Germans got another ally.
@@dovetonsturdee7033And a good one. The book was much better than the movie, although the movie had a great cast. Anthony Quinn was one hell of an actor. He played every person except a Black Man, although he was preparing to play a Black Man, but that too controversial, and he did not make that movie.
I wonder if in 1914 the reason that Britain did nothing to get Turkey (Ottomans) on side was because it was considered a liability? Britain did so little that it did not even respond to peaceful Turkish overtures in July 2014! In the Balkan Wars of 1912 it had been shown to be weaker than the emerging Balkan nations. I.e. getting Turkey on side might encourage more dynamic Balkan nations to choose to join the other side e.g. in hope of being rewarded with Turkish territories. Only, after the defeat in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign it must have been clear that this was not the case. Ignoring Serbia, Greece and Romania did belatedly join the allies though neither successfully while Bulgaria, which only after the 2nd Balkan could have gone either way, chose after the failure at Gallipoli, to join Turkey with the Central powers.
Seizing is a nice descroption for theft. Like always Churchill realized his plans without any consideration or scruples. Maybe it will be a good idea to make a special Video about Churchills life and his crimes.
Thanks for watching everyone! A bit of a different video today, let me know if you want to see more videos like this!

It was also perfectly legal and the contracts stated that the UK could take the ships
Only then ? Try ALWAYS

One of the most interesting videos you’ve made. Really enjoyed it. Some great footage of the ships added greatly. Cheers and thanks. Peter N.

Nice to hear of Lairds shipyard, my hometown of Birkenhead. 23,000 men once worked there for the British elite.
Another great video!
Interesting and well done video BZ
Great , nice vid!! Keep it up!!!

not only that but the sales contract had a clause that allowed for it. Not there fault the Ottomans didn't read the contract.

Yes, it was standard during war. Perhaps if had happened in 1910 or 1920 it would be unusual.
@@jollyjohnthepirate3168 Which, of course, was a very foolish decision on the part of the Ottoman Empire.
And we think, we live in crazy days....
Question is there a story on the guns of Naverone?
No. It is a fictional adventure story.

Does not delivering a battleship count as seizing?
Requisition hardly needs the standard of an art.
well.
for the most part, civility seems to be holding in the comments.
I, personally, am no Churchill fan.

What's a little battlehship theft between "friends?"
They were fully compensated 📚

Not theft the contract clearly stated the UK had the right to take them if a war broke out or was likely
It might be an even better idea to read a few accurate facts about Churchill?
That's Churchill.
It's was done in the Nation's interest . Period . Any other world political leader would have done the same in similar conditions .
I get why he did it but it's still shity
