That last bit isn't exactly unusual. On submarines, usually everybody comes back or else nobody comes back. Individual casualties are comparatively rare, and if they do occur are at least as likely due to accidents as to enemy fire.

Though he does mispronounce the name of the city of Groton, Connecticut and though submarine duty in World War Two was the most hazardous, no casualties is not that amazing. Like we used to say, "We all come back or none of us do." The problem on submarines is that even if another ship is nearby, they can do nothing to help a submarine in trouble. The entire crew saves their sub or the entire crew dies with their sub.

I was down the pier from the U.S.S. Barb (SSN 596) when it had a steam line rupture. Our crew and other boats on the pier assisted with the recovery. I never new the history of its predecessor until now. I remember reading a chronological history of the US Navy. When I got to world war 2 each page was a month. You would see 5 submarines commissioned and 5 submarines sunk. All in a month. The guys on those boats in WW2 were hard core. DBF.

Great boat stories, thank you! Imagine the additional potential devastation inflicted, (Plus some ruined Naval careers saved) if the Mk-14 torpedo problem was officially recognized/resolved much earlier in the war? In reality it lingered almost until the very end of the war, tainting the sub service somewhat during that time.

Preminin was recommended for the award Hero of the Soviet Union. But the leadership decided it was peace time so he didn't deserve the award and gave him the Red Star posthumously instead. My opinion is his actions avoided the possibility of a war and he damn well earned Hero of the Soviet Union (and a Medal of Freedom from the United States as well).
At the time we were adversaries, but to me he will always be a hero whose actions reflected greatly upon himself and the submarine service.

Everyone needs to see the video done by the TH-camr nicknamed" the fat electrician" for his channel and actually watch his presentation on the USS Barb which is absolutely hysterical and accurate
His presentation will actually make you think and laugh about the exploits of this subs commander and crew and the absolute mad genius of some of what they actually accomplished. Trust me it's worth the watch.!!
You will never look at military history, technology or traditions the same way ever again after you start watching his channel. I highly recommend it

The United States owes a huge debt of gratitude to the sailors of the Silent Service who brought the Imperial Japanese Navy to its knees. The B-29s that ended the war were flying nearly unopposed because the Island nation no longer had any shipping to supply its military forces or its increasingly destitute civilian population.

One piece of submarine history that I would really be interested in seeing covered, and which really is history that deserves to be remembered, is the account of the Ictineo and Ictineo II. Since they were creations of a Spanish inventor during the Civil War.

Before Swede Momsen, submaritime rescue simply did not exist. Not only did he invent the Momsen lung, and the McCann rescue chamber, he invented the escape hatch.
During the salvage operations of the Squalus, a British submarine sank in a shallower depth, about half of the Squalus' depth. Only three men survived if I recall. The idea that 100% of the survivors of the initial accident would survive the rescue was radically different than all previous disasters. Swede Momsen literally invented submaritime rescue.
On another note, the incident was the last time that the Navy's peacetime Medal of Honor was awarded.

I was a surface, black shoe, officer and this video gave me the "chills". I feared submarines while serving on both an LPH and a CV. I will admit it. Subs scared the hell out of me. I could take on a hurricane in the North Atlantic, but just the thought of going down inside a submarine scared the hell out of me. Brazo Zulu to all "bubbleheads" everywhere.

In the 1960's, my school bus driver was a WWII veteran of the submarine service. I asked him if he had ever been depth charged. He said yes and that it was like being inside a barrel while somebody pounded it with a sledge hammer.
