Do you think people care about "coincidence", I don't think so, I think a goalkeeper that blocks every single shot by "coincidence" is overall better and will be overall seen and preferred better over one that dives in the corners spot on every time but blocks no shots. Is there a difference? There is Does it matter AT ALL? It doesn't
@@-Sergioxx- thing is no keeper will ever be able to block every penalty in a shootout, at least not often, so the keeper being able to dictate where a player shoots maximises the chances of saving it. Showing that Krul has a great understanding of the psychology behind penalties

He played the sub conscious mind of the opponent. Before every penalty kick Krul warmed up on one side of the goal and dived on the other side to save the kick. He let the opponent subconsciously think that the other side from where krul did his stretches was vacant.
That's not something you can count on, so he still had to wait and react to the shot.

When you influence the subconscious mind, you don’t have to guess the direction.
Krul did not guess any of the dives. He knew what influence he had put on their subconscious.
He touched Ruiz’s right shoulder, subconsciously telling him to shoot in that direction. SAVE.
He would walk around the box, either on the right or left. Subconsciously telling the shooters that that side is covered, so shoot in the opposite direction.
Thrice, he dived in the correct direction, beaten by the power of the shot. Third time is the charm, SAVE.
Learn about the subconscious mind and use it to your advantage. It’s a “superpower”.

Glad Tim Krul finally getting some recognition. I remember 2014 WC Netherlands vs Costa Rica, game went to penalties but in the 118 or something minute, Van Gaal subs on Krul for Cillessen just because Krul had saved 2 penalties in his career and Cillessen hadn’t saved any. Krul went on to guess the right way all 4 shots and saved 2 of them. Louis Van Gaal looked like a genius because of that move

In 2014, I only watched soccer/football, but I didn't know much about it and I didn't know many players. So I'd never heard about Tim Krul, however I'm Dutch. But from that moment I knew who he is! What a great penalty shoot-out that was, awesome! / In 2014 keek ik enkel nog maar naar voetbal, maar ik wist er nog niet zoveel van en kende ook nog niet zoveel spelers. Dus had ik ook nog nooit van Tim Krul gehoord, tot dit moment, toen wist ik wie hij was. Dat was echt een gave strafschoppenserie, geweldig!
it was actually mind games, he tricked the players to shoot the ball to the direction he wanted, if you pay close attention you will see that he walks to one side of the goal, this tricks the players and gives them some sort of a block and small space on the side he was walking, and makes the other side look like it has more space, so they shoot to the side they think has more space!

He literally asked for a minute of silence for and he literally carried a dole of the man who scored 4 goals against him in the final. And Argentina has no problem with that man’s appalling behavior but they waged a war on the Netherlands for a bit criticism from our coach which wasn’t even meant as criticism but only to bring forward facts that would highlight the Netherlands chances on winning the quarterfinal.

Now that I revisit this, I don't know how Costa Rica's last penalty wasn't retaken, as Krul clearly stepped forward from the goal line.
Lower the playback speed and pause before the player kicks the ball and see it for yourself.
You'd have to retake every penalty then. Both navas and krull came out a lot by todays standards

The only thing costs Rica had to do was shoot way harder… because normally goalkeepers guess where the ball will go and then jump in this direction… this time Krul waited until they shot and jumped after the ball and because they were more softly he could save them

I'm not sure it would have worked out again though if he replaced the keepers for the second time. I think the suprise of this decision played a big part.

The fact that this game ended in a penalty shoot out is very weird. Netherlands are 10x better than Costa Risa, so this should never have happened.
Van Gaal asked Krul if he wanted to this job one more time at the 2022WC in Qatar but he didn't want to leave his family. Wonder what had happend if he was there against Argentina, Noppert wasn't a penalty killer.
I don't understand why the Costa Rican squad got on their knees. It signals desperation. Stand tall. Its not over untill its over. You may have lost the shootout simply due to having the wrong attitude.

I’ve always randomly thought about these penalty kicks, ever since I saw them, live. I think this is the first time I’m watching it back, since then.
When I thought about them, three things always stuck with me:
1. The gutsy call by the Dutch boss to sub his starting GK for one off the bench 2. The camera panning to Cilissen, right after he got subbed, showing him kicking a garbage can.
3. Bryan Ruiz missing - just watched this right now. Var would’ve called for a retake on this. Both of Krul’s feet were off the goal line, while the shot was being kicked.
