    That sounds really rough, Matt, it should be quiet on tickover, and smooth to rev. The lumpy start, and odd sooty plugs sounds like the firing order is wrong, the cylinder numbers, and firing order are cast on the alloy inlet manifold webs. It should be 18436572, odd and even on opposite sides of the engine. Number 1 lead on the distributor , and the rotor arm sould be pointing nearest to the radiator at TDC on the firing stroke. Pull the distributor out and spin the rotor around 180 degrees if it's pointing towards the back. The static timing, running on unleaded, needs to be set to 6 degrees BTDC. The cam timing is idiot proof, both timing wheels have a Woodruff key locating slot, and a dot timing mark that should face forwards. When they're set, the two dots should be set to align adjacent to each other, the crank one at 12 o'clock, and the cam one at 6 o'clock. Make sure the oil thrower, a deep thin dished washer is in place on the outer face of the crank timing wheel. There is no chain tensioner on the Rover V8 to worry about. You just assemble the chain on the wheels with the dots aligned, then the assembly is a tight sliding fit over the two keyways, which you turn carefully on the cam and crank. Then fit the washer, bolt and lockplate on the cam fixing bolt. There is also a proper layout and spacers for the ignition leads, they can cross fire if the leads are old and touching. This is easy to spot in the dark, a static blue glow can be seen where HT current is leaking.

      Lumpy/not smooth running on SU's often down to worn/bent needles or no/low oil in the damper pots. Also an air leak in the vacuum advance/retard line.

  • @Juntasification

    Set the ignition timing first with a timing light. Then fiddle with the carb idle jets.

    • @joshonthetube
      @joshonthetube ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might take a few back and forth between the two to get the idle down low enough that the timing reads correctly. (don't want it to be doing any mechanical advance when you adjust it).

    • @Bratfalken

      Late ignition produces glowing headers.

    • @tonys1636
      @tonys1636 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being SU carbs may be worn needles or a bent one and possible low oil or none for the damping of them. A check that the vacuum advance/retard has no leaks and is connected.

    My Morgan plus 8 with a 4.6 Rover v8 doesn’t sound as ropey as that, lots more work needed to get it to run sweetly.

  • @Saaketti
    @Saaketti ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Since there is non stock cam you definetly have to check the correct timing from the manufacturer. When "bigger" cams are timed they are always more in advanced when they are timed correctly. So with cam with more degrees of duration is at the stock cam time it wil be hopelesly late in time. That will cause red hot stuff at the exhaust side. More agressive cam will too mix up the mixture near idle speeds.
    There should be timing chart with the cam where you can locate the correct cam timing. Usually it is told how many mm intake valve is open at the tdc or just crank degrees.

    Fantastic to see the P6 up and running. This project was how i found your channel as i searched around youtube to see how hard it would be to rebuild the dead 4.6 in my P38. I've since completed that rebuild and its great to see progress on the car that showed me i could be brave enough to do it myself. Im PROPERLY invested in this project and it would be SO cool if it made it to the NEC with you. Well done Matt!

  • @Adam.Piper62
    @Adam.Piper62 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fantastic! So happy to see a P6 again - all you have got to do now is give it a proper tune. Personally I'd lower that idle speed drastically back down to what it should be and then you can start to consider mixture and timing settings - you cant set anything at 3000rpm. Plus, your gearbox issues could be that the engines running too fast they're designed to idle at 500-750 RPM so no wonder its creeping lol.

  • @gbentley8176

    Concur with all the comments on double check vacuum, carbs and timing also leads and firing order. My Landrover V8 from 72 is very carb sensitive. All adjustments on fast idle. New fuel also required a needle change for smoothest running but yours sounded very rough.

    Apart from the timing that needs to be set with a strobe light listening to your findings with some of the spark plugs black and others " lean " definitely points to one carb running lean and the other running rich .
    On Right hand drive cars the carb on the drivers side feeds cylinders 1and 7 ( passengers side) & 4 and 6 drivers side .
    The passengers side carb feeds cylinders 2 &8 ( drivers side) and 3 & 5 passengers side .
    As your p6 is 4.6 litres with a fast road cam assuming that the normal needles BBG in the SU hif 6 carbs may not be suitable for the larger capacity engine and the potential increase in airflow into the engine.

    I have a TR7 V8. 4 port weber, mallory twin spark distributor and a Tony Pond single exit exhaust. Something always went wrong. The last thing was my oil pressure sensor blew off and I spewed oil all over the carpark at work on a night shift. I managed to find a blank Wade air fitting to replace the oil pressure sensor. I refilled my oil (I always have a spare oil supply in my boot, amongst anything to not break down). I drove home and parked up. That was in 2014!!! Ive not touched it since 😅. Maybe I should have started my own TH-cam channel back in the early 2000's.

    @garethdavies7326 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Before you set the timing with a strobe… you cannot trust the timing marks on these engine, the crank pulleys inner and outer sections can slip out of alignment. You need to set the engine to true TDC and qualify the original markings or make your own new ones. Also, if half the plugs show lean then one of the carbs needs adjustment. Double check the firing order for the sake of a few minutes. It would be nice to check the cam timing but do the easy things first.

I don't know if you can still get those old Colourtune thingies from Gunsen but that will give you a visual view of the mixture oh and they used to do a xenon timing light for checking the auto advance that could be useful. The sticking float could well be your issue. If one of the carbs was getting no fuel (may have been stuck closed initially) then it would still be sucking air through the venturi while the other carb only provided half the required fuel (running very lean). Also with fuel only coming in from one carb, that might explain the uneven distribution of mixture to the cylinders, with some richer than others. I would guess there may be some dirt in the carbs which could still cause the floats to stick unless you give them a good strip and clean.

    It doesn’t look good without wings. I think they bolt on like Citroen DS

    Red headers are probably down to running lean with over advanced timing.
    Get it to a rolling road with SU carb experience. You are never going to get it right by ear, especially without a timing light while revving it silly.
    Capacity, cam change and E10 fuel make it inevitable a those SU needles are not correct.
    You may get it right at a single point in the rpm range, but never across it.

      You probably handled it all lot better than I would have under the same circumstances,defo a garage to be avoided in future!@@furiousdriving 🖖edit to add,just seen the leak..eek! coul;d be a sticking float or blocked needle in one of the carbs, I think each carb feeds different cylinders? so if the lean or rich cylinders match to one of the carbs could be that?

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grrfy i believe that’s right and explains the uneven rich/lean plugs. Going to check them again now it’s run better and the floats been freed off

    Cards need balancing and mixture setting . Looking at plug colours is a waste of time if it's not running under load
