Man that video, although not a riding video, it's about something I am also passionate about, and turns out to be my favorite video I've seen this week! Brian you were able to state everything so eloquently from your backstory to the channel startup all the way to that great advice for aspiring channels. It reminded me of our awesome road trip talks where we drive for miles and don't ever even turn the music on.... great job dude!

So I somehow came across both of your channels a few months ago...I didn't ride and I hadn't been on a bike since I was a little kid.
After watching your's, Brian's and Seth's videos and seeing how much fun you have riding your bikes I woke up one morning and went out and bought myself a Cannondale Habit.
      Now I'm completely hooked.
I sit in work all week, waiting for the weekend to come so I can get out on my bike and ride. Every weekend I travel from my hometown in Liverpool in the north west of England where it's flat as a pancake to different parts of the U.K. to ride the best trails Britain's mountains have to offer.
You guys have inspired me with your videos and it's pretty much down to you that I've found something I love and know I'll enjoy for the rest of my life.
If anyone here is contemplating getting into riding, then just do it. It will be the best decision you ever make.
Thanks guys, and maybe one day "I'll see ya on the trail" till then "live free, ride hard and get stoked!!"

This is the best thing I've read all day. Thanks for sharing, and SO STOKED to hear you are out riding a bike again. As you have already remembered.... biking is about the best thing ever, and the more people on bike, the better place this world will be :D

Brain, love the videos you do. I think the one thing that I like the most about yours is the fact that your real, no bull crap. You show your crashes, you say your not smooth. But you keep pushing on. You inspire me to ride more, right now I'm healing from a broke collar bone from a ride a few weeks ago. I'm living my riding watching you and all the other shredders on TH-cam.. thank you so much

I said this in my 200 subs video a few weeks ago, but the reason a bunch of us small to medium size channels are able to network and bond is because of the ground work that you and Alexander and Seth built together. I've met so many great funny and skilled personalities as a result of our community, including yourself, so thanks for having that spark and chasing your dream, because if not, I wouldn't have met so many people, and I probably wouldn't have gotten hooked up with my prosthetic. That was all due to a chain of events that started because I decided to film myself riding!

    • @The_Sampler
      @The_Sampler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The community aspect is hands down the most amazing thing about TH-cam imo. Brian, Seth, Phil, and myself have all found not just collaboraters to work with, but honest to god FRIENDS!

  • @TheLoamRanger
    @TheLoamRanger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes. I really relate to the part about piecing the puzzle together in editing. Sometimes I come back from a ride/shoot and think "I'm not sure what the heck I'm gonna get out of that, video-wise" but then one little clip sparks an idea, then you realize that another fits perfectly within that idea... then you're scoring some music all of a sudden haha. I love that process of creating something, something that -- even if no one else were to watch -- I'd be super proud of and happy that I did it . In many ways it's such hard work, but it's those times of creativity just for the sake of creativity that make the hours melt away and makes the "work" seem a whole lot like play.
    That rhymed...
Thanks for the insightful and honest videos Brian!

I feel like there's a difficult balance between creating videos that you want to watch and trying to make videos that others will want to watch. I'd love to watch mountain biking videos where the rider is invisible, so it feels like it's just you and the trail. For me it's about the true POV aspect. I don't want to watch someone else ride, I want to feel as though it's me in the driver's seat.
However, that takes any and all personality out of the equation. Quite frankly, I doubt that many people would be interested in just that. There's no story involved. Watching your videos I'll wonder, "Is Brian going to... hit that jump, make that climb (

Finding this video was kind of a relief for me. I started my mtb channel a few months ago, and feel stuck with my progress. I try to deliver my experiences with good quality video and audio from Peruvian mtb trails and thanks to you I finally realized I'm missing the most important component; the connection with the viewers. I'll try and include myself talking and commenting more on my videos from now on. Thanks for your story and insights, it means a lot to us small youtubers.

Brian, just watched this fantastic video which has (alongside your other videos) has greatly inspired me. I’m currently doing what I can to build my channel which I set up a while ago but as you stated, it’s been dormant for a while, however, I’ve really started to go for it and I seem to be receiving some great feedback (so far!). I’ve been mountain biking since 1986 and I’ve been through the XC racing scene and now I’m in love with the sport more than ever 🥰. In the last few recent years I’ve had some family losses and my mental health has suffered and continues to do so but mountain biking always pulls me out of the darker days in such a positive way. In addition, since really getting into my channel, I’ve found that simply focusing my energy into the editing of my footage helps just as much as shredding my bikes as I relive the moments again and again. I admire your style and positivity both as a mountain biker and a great human being so please continue to do what you seem to do so very well on two wheels, as it gives us newbies hope and ambition. Any other “top tips” you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, I’d like to say thanks for your time reading this incessant babbling and to say “Shred well and prosper” and I can only hope to meet you on the trails on day. Very Best regards... UpHillPhill 🤘✊

As much as having your channel helps you make connections with all of us, me watching your channel and having met you and ridden with you has helped me make incredible connections in the cycling world as well. Whether it was working with the high school kids this summer or just chatting about bikes with people in and around my dorm building, everyone knows who you, Alexander, and Seth are. And similarly to how you said in the video, to make a great channel you need to capitalize on the trends, to make good connections with people you need to capitalize on the trends they focus on. This environment you've created on TH-cam and Patreon is one that I am lucky to be a part of and, like I have mentioned in previous comments on yours and Alexander's videos, I will always support your channel and your mission whether that be with a comment like this, a comment on an Instagram post or even just by old fashioned word of mouth. You have become that authority figure in your niche for sure. Keep on ridin' the best trails in the world!

You were the topic of discussion during our trail building session today. My buddy Ron commented that he can't figure out what keeps drawing him to your videos. I laughed and said that it is because you are one of us, you ride like we ride. He agreed. So, thanks for doing videos that don't have to include 20ft gap jumps. ......or feeling the need to do the jump on the snake pit skinny.
I'm going to keep throwing invites for you to come ride The Trails at Jakes Rocks,on the Allegheny National Forest, when you continue your 50 state shred. I like that you give insights to the places that you ride and this trail system is a really cool story. Be safe.

3yrs later and still relevant evergreen content! This is a really great video and I know I appreciated every 28 minues of it! I'm obsessed with content creating, most of mine has revolved around photography with regular pages.. Video and TH-cam is very new to me!, But I'm absolutely loving the process of having a lot to learn! I have a long way to go but I always try to improve something somewhere in each video. I have a lot of work to do with story telling and "connection" obviously the biggest thing to a channel and one of my biggest struggles! getting in front of the camera is not a strong point. Hopefully I can utilize TH-cam as a tool to grow and get comfortable with stuff like that , that has done nothing but give me anxiety my entire life " being put in a spot light".

I think the biggest issue that I'm going to have to overcome in my videos is really thinking through the content that I want to provide. "Telling the story". I never really thought about these things as stories, and that is unusual for me. I'm a story teller, and it surprises me that I didn't see my approach to content creation as such. We all have stories to tell. My "niche" that I want to explore is mountain biking from a family perspective. So I need to start really thinking about what kind of content I envision with my videos and not just rush out to create something because I feel I need to.
"Create the videos you want to watch". This is probably the most important piece of advice that any creative can receive. If we try to anticipate what the world wants, we will fail. A good barameter for what the world wants is what "we" want. If we want it, chances are there are a lot of other people who want it, too. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard successful artists say that they didn't start getting successful until AFTER they stopped worrying about what the world wanted, and created the things THEY wanted.
I realize that my first video is now more of an experiment. It's just documenting a ride I recently went on. It's not unique in any way, so it probably isn't going to be my best effort. I'm still going to publish it because I went through the motions to get it done. But you've given us all a lot of food for thought in this.
I noticed you didn't cover gear. I'm grateful for that. I don't yet have a gimbal, and while I hope to remedy that soon, I don't know exactly when that will be. I hope the gear I have will be sufficient until that time. I also think I'll ultimately need to figure out my sound. I don't know if that will come in the form of an external mike, learning how to edit audio better, or doing something like what Phil Kmetz does with syncing audio from another GoPro. I've already invested in my GoPro Hero 5.
The timing of this video is awesome. I hope to get my Family MTB channel going soon. Your advice on naming hit kind hard, though. it just felt natural to include MTB in the name. I will give your advice on naming some consideration, but I don't think I'll change it anytime soon. 😂
I will have to learn how to reach out to some of my favorite TH-camrs. Thanks for all of this, Brian. This was very helpful.
Stay upright and keep the rubber side down.

This is the video have been looking for... this video is TH-cam GOLD! When I asked you previously about the possibility of you being a guest speaker in my classroom, this is the message/info I wanted my students to hear and learn from you. I will be showing this to all my classes, I have many students who are already active on social media and specifically TH-cam but, they lack direction and real world knowledge. Hopefully, they will appreciate the wisdom and direction you provide in this video. This is a gem of a video, I feel so fortunate to have found this it; thanks again and Best in 2018! I am a ski racer but have recently started mountain biking a lot and I got "infected" as you called it. It's cool that on top of mtb related stuff you put out this video, because I think you give very useful tips about building a TH-cam channel and how to become a better version of yourself.

Spot on Brian. You put the work in, you'll get the rewards, whatever those are. It can take 5 minutes, it could take 50 years. And you'll only ever put the work in if you've got the passion. I've said it a few times and I'll say it again, big kudos for what you are doing and the influence it's having.
Short story, my other passion (than bikes) is music. I DJ (I have a day job too) and - short story - after 5 years I've finally found my niche (down-tempo electronica) and have been pumping a monthly radio show for 18 months. It has a small listener base that is every so slowly increasing. The parallels to your advice about building a channel are strong: find the niche, produce quality content, interact with your audience, collaborate and offer help, be passionate and do what you'd watch (or listen to) not what you think will work (play to the crowd).
All of that work has started to "pay-off" and resulted this week in a gig at, in my opinion, the best sound system in London. I couldn't help but think about all this stuff and what you, Alex and Seth are doing whilst I was queing up the records.
So a virtual high-5, fist bump and nod that this is what it's all about. Keep doing it Brian!
PS: Here's my channel ;-) (hey, you know how this works!) soundcloud.com/alonestare

TH-cam redemption. Such a good job, Brian. There is so much schlock on youtube that I really did not spend much time/effort there............until I ran across your videos. I was a big MTB guy on the East coast in the 90's, got injured kind of badly, had to stop riding............then started riding a few months ago after nearly twenty years.
Shortly thereafter I saw your stuff. GREAT motivation. I am riding again, but left my hard-tail in the stable and have a full suspension machine now. Losing weight, getting healthy, having FUN again, and get to thank you for adding some jet fuel to my motivation engine.
    Keep it up!!

I recently came across your video. It has inspired me to get out and ride. I just purchased a new Bike and I’m working on my cardio and my fitness within this last week I have lost 5 pounds and looking for more. I have only been on the trails a couple of times and enjoying them and can’t wait to get out on them more.Unfortunately Fall is here and the snow will come as I live in New Brunswick Canada. But I have purchased a fat bike as well and will get out on the trails in the snow. This video motivates me more to do a channel unsure if it will be mountain bike related but possibly some videos and maybe other things that I am into. I have been going through all your videos and enjoying them. Keep it up.

This video is so true. In short: be likeable (can differ for which audience ofc), have footage, be willing to put effort in it.
At the moment I have 15 subscribers, my MTB video's get between 100 to 300 views.
So far it's been mostly just pov-rides and no talking. I'm at the point where a gimbal would benefit my footage a lot.
Thinking about the 'tell a story' or be charismatic, well...not really got a clue where I would be at.
Enough to think about. Thanks Brian.
