    Britain's greatest ever contribution to the world of music: The Rutles. Their importance cannot be overstated.

    I saw the Rutles TV movie in March 1978. When I saw the album in a store in May 1978 I immediately bought it. Same thing when I saw the follow up album, Archaeology in January 1997.

    Even this bit by CNN was completely in prefab

    I have never seen this clip before. Wow. Thank you!! Somewhere out there must be an HD copy of Shangri-La. One can hope. I'm living in hope. For hope. And for cheese and onions.

    The 4th Rutle was tragically killed by a fan in New York. A box fan fell out of someone’s apartment window and struck him on the head.

    It always makes me mad when I see people saying the Rutles parodied the Beatles. It was the other way round! Without the Rutles, no one would ever have heard of the Beatles!

  • @petemarr824
    @petemarr824 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I still get quite annoyed with that Rutles parody band, The Beatles. Sgt Pepper is a straight rip off of Sgt Rutter. The film Magical Mystery Tour was just a straight copy of the great Rutles Tragical History.
    McCartney and Lennon will never come close to the writing partnership of the great McQuickly and Nasty.
    Leggy will be turning in his Australian rubber raft!

    • @sirarmysuit
      @sirarmysuit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're not they only one who get's annoyed. The Beatles also made "Help!", which sounds EXACTLY like The Rutles' "Ouch!" If you're gonna make a parody of The Rutles you have to put in as much effort as you possibly can.

      No - it's just sad because Neil Innes was such a cool bloke.

    • @zazelby
      @zazelby 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The guy who did the "Paul" analogue's singing parts died first, before Archaeology was recorded, which is why that album has very few songs sung by Dirk McQuickly - some were recorded for the original album. (Eric Idle only played Dirk on-camera, and didn't do any of his singing. He was invited to sing for Dirk on Archaeology, but he turned it down) But Neil was the first on-screen performer to die, and also their head songwriter (a lot of Rutles songs were even songs that he'd written earlier, for non-Rutles projects), and he was really the heart and soul of the band.

    Neil Innes was a great songwriter, he wrote those beautiful Beatlesque songs, which sound just like songs the Beatles forgot to record.

    • @zazelby
      @zazelby 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To the extent that a judge, not knowing what a "pastiche" is, required that all songs on the original Rutles album to be credited to Innes, Lennon, and McCartney, with Lennon-McCartney (i.e., the publishing company holding the rights to Beatles compositions at the time) getting 50% of the royalties. For a while, in fact, Rutles songs seem to have *only* been credited to Lennon and McCartney! This was cleared up by the time of Archaeology, which just lists the *actual* songwriter, Innes.

      Real band with real and talented musicians. No A.I. involved, which did not even exist at the time.
