    NixHex here. I spent several years doing copyediting for Smogon instead of playing the game, and the one thing I noticed was that the analyses are clearly written by fellow non-players. I can't tell you how many hundreds of analyses are written in a vacuum. "Magnezone can be used to trap and KO Skarmory to make way for your physical sweepers." Great, but how do I get Magnezone on the field in the first place? Especially when team preview came around, "just use Magnezone" isn't helpful against a good player who knows how to bait with double switches. Furthermore, rarely do the analyses explain how to use the opponent's fear of Magnezone against them and predict the opponent switching out Skarm, only for you to just send in something else. Competitive Pokemon is not an algorithm to be solved, and relying on strats to learn the game just hinders growth. I wish I had known then what I know now lol.

      @@fulltimeslackerii8229 new players (the target audience of Smogon’s analyses) don’t get that, and it’s not explained to them in the analysis. Furthermore, even that solution assumes that the opponent is not going to predict that and send in their Lando-T, who beats your physical attacker AND Magnezone. Reading an article with perfect grammar but written by a non-player does not teach you these things.

    I'll also say, don't be afraid to ask for advice from your opponents. When I was first getting into Gen 2 OU, whenever I lost to a high elo player, I would ask them, "Hey do you have any advice for how to improve my team? I'm not super familiar with the meta."
    I was effectively holding an exp share and leeching knowledge off of people. Sometimes I would get abstract advice that changed the way I thought about my team and the game, and other times I would get extremely specific advice like "Steelix would bring more value to your team than Skarm because he answers X."
    Over time as my knowledge improved, my team slowly evolved from a janky, gimmicky JoltWak team into what you referred to in a previous video as "the offense big 5" + Marowak. And I'm glad I slowly arrived at this team. If I had started with this team, I would not have understood how it worked.

    This is one of my biggest issues for tiers I don't play often. For instance, trying to make a Monolax team in GSC. I was so focused on making up for Lax's weaknesses offensively and didn't know what to do after. Machamp for steels and rocks and then Pursuit Tar for Missy and Gengar, then Skarm to have some sort of Lax answer, Zapdos for the mandatory electric. After that, I just fell short. Couldn't come up with what I wanted to do for the last member, so I gave up and scrapped the team

    As someone who played ou for years and was decent at building, I find that switching to another format entirely really gives you a unique perspective on building. For the last 2 years, I've played BSS (Nintendos official singles format. Lvl 50 build 6 pick 3) and the flow of teams in that format is entirely different from ou. Of course there's stall, hyper offense and such. But it's revealed a deeper level of sorts, especially observing Japanese veterans of the format. I very much suspect that translating those nuances back into 6v6 formats would result in some interesting stuff.

    • @RocketPropelledMexican
      @RocketPropelledMexican 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      BSS doesn't have enough resources in English, would be great for more people to translate between JP/KR who have larger BSS community

    • @yungossan379
      @yungossan379 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @RocketPropelledMexican there's a smogon affiliated discord with all English users. And a spot on the smogon forums for us. But I do agree that we need more resources for us western players. It's why a good portion haven't even heard of the format.

    • @RocketPropelledMexican
      @RocketPropelledMexican 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@yungossan379 One of the best ways I find to get into a format is just to take a look at youtube commentary on gameplay. You'd usually get a sense of the turn by turn decision making process through that, and by extension what the meta dynamics are. And there is a sore lack of such videos for BSS.

    • @yungossan379
      @yungossan379 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @RocketPropelledMexican yeah. It's mostly Japanese stuff. I think anyone searching for bss will eventually find the discord, and it's an incredibly helpful community. One of the nicest on smogon, I've found. Sadly, we just don't have the western presence to get more eyes on us. And I've heard attempts have been made. Hopefully that will change, though. You'd be surprised how many western players are only aware of smogon 6v6 and don't even know other formats exist

    I think base building games and give a pretty good lesson in pokemon team building, the parallels are kind of apparent -- understand why starts work, understand every unit and your base will hold, until somebody skilled checks you. TBH it's kind of rough do you have jack of all trades knowledge to not be ass, and even then that doesn't stop the random -300 ELO transactions from happening at least weekly

  • @orbital1950
    @orbital1950 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The concept can be broken down to what kind of thinker the players are and how that shapes the metagame as a whole. The left brain analytic thinkers that are aiming for the highest amount of consistency & coverage of the most amount of threats possible, essentially trying to create a concrete "Logic" or flowchart of the game they play, then the creative right brain thinkers that are constantly trying to break the mold and defy convention while trying to apply more "mental" pressure rather than technical in the middle of the battle by maintaining momentum, constant double switching, ect. (I.E. Blunder), conditioning you the entire battle to "force" you to play their game, trying to get you to crack and make mistakes.
    Left brain thinkers make the meta,
    right brain thinkers break it, and the left brain has to re-adapt and make a new meta. (until something SO concrete has become the standard that running anything else is extremely suboptimal and detrimental.)

  • @Taliheim
    @Taliheim 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    oh, ive been looking for a video like this for a while! People always focus on the translations and applications of fundamental concepts when you try to ask them what fundamentals are, or just provide what's relevant to the given tier, the present mechanics and available pokemon and new items and abilities and movepools and such, and it gets tiring when you're trying to look for the pre-translated stuff.
    And on the topic of the whole Art thing - where do you think the line lies where expression in teambuilding, personal or otherwise, becomes detrimental to performance? How much is too much, how much objective inferiority can subjective comfort and pilotability cover for, how valuable is intention and synergy compared to general goodstuff?

    Hello Kevin, im unsure if you read these, but still. My brother loves Sceptile and wants to use it in ADV OU. Do you have any teams/team structures you could recommend?

    • @yourdagan
      @yourdagan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I'll offer an answer.
      Perhaps the best Sceptile set right now will be Leech Seed, Substitute, and Leaf Blade. For 4th slot, you have Endeavor and Hidden Power Ice, to name a couple options.
      First, some issues:
      Celebi walls that, mostly. So partner Houndoom is a counter, Dugtrio is a check. Could also go for Moltres or Charizard instead, or Salamence or Gyarados.
      Skarmory can phaze it out. With Fire types, they can always just be switched in on, but Magneton obviously can render it a non-issue, and it has the added bonus of eliminating Forretress in the case of Sceptile lacking HP-Fire itself, which is crucial due to Rapid Spin de-seeding the user, and Sceptile having no other way to pressure it.
      And what if they have their own Fire type? Maybe you'll want a bulky Water or Blissey.
      And even though Blissey doesn't like getting Leech Seeded, without Spikes down, there's no issue just switching round and round till Sceptile's been PP stalled out of them---so strongly consider bringing Spikes.
      The strength is being able to pressure Blissey like this, who otherwise walls most special attackers. And generally, you can stall out almost every non-flying type like this because Sceptile is that much faster than they are, and again, with Spikes down, they are lacking in recourse; and with Endeavor, there's always a nasty surprise waiting if Sceptile's out of HP to sub with.
