Junk merchant, petty criminal, philosopher, legal scholar, even a bit of a scientist and all in two brief appearances. If Nikki & Steven follow this show up with Better Call Saul I'll definitely be following along, and I'll be bitterly disappointed if they don't previsit this character there.

This is the best season of television ever. The creator of BB wanted a clear ending for the show and didn't want it to run on and lose it's spark, so season 5 was absolutely intended to be the final season.
I don’t consider it a spoiler to say so either. The writer’s announced in advance that the 5th season would be the final one, so everyone watching at the time knew they were watching the final season.

JMO, I have BB #2. True Detective Season 1 is the GOAT in my mind. Walt may be my 2nd favorite character, but after Rust Cohle for sure. It's a shame these two were airing at the same time. So many people missed out on TD due to BB or just not having HBO. If you haven't seen TD Season 1, do yourself the biggest favor in the world, watch it, and pay attention! So worth it.
@@lagronemikal TD S1 is indeed amazing. But it's easier to make a masterpiece of a TV show when you producing just 1 season. That's why BB is way above TD S1.
Regarding the bear... Just for what it's worth, they planned *very little* out ahead of time. Vince has always been very forward about that. Rather, they constantly went back through older episodes and found elements to bring forward and payoff in their new scripts. Instead of planning everything out, Vince likes to develop stories organically and sequentially, and he thinks that when you get an idea for a scene and start writing to that moment, you lose authenticity. The writers' room intentionally wrote the characters into corners that were nearly impossible to resolve, at which point they would often spend days trying to figure out how the characters would realistically react and escape.
Yeah. The teddy bear foreshadows Gus's death only in hindsight. That is, they didn't have Gus's death in mind when creating the teddy bear in the first place. But when they decided on how to kill Gus, they saw the burned face of the bear and thought.. "be kindof cool to do something like that, wouldn't it?"
As in all great works of art, there's a few happy accidents.
More reasons why they're such brilliant writers!!
@@ianwestc they didn’t even think about Gus being a recurring character when the bear was introduced. It wasn’t until they were creating season 3 when they decided to make Gus the main villain.

The reason Breaking Bad has such perfect foreshadowing is because, when the writers are doing future episodes, they're looking back to see what symbols they've already made. They call it "backmining" because they have no idea what they're going to do next. Like with the machine gun, for example. Vince has said in numerous interviews he and his whole team have no idea where they're going with that.

Can you really fault someone for forgetting a detail in the first episode of a show that they are now on the 5th season of?

1. There was some possibility that amc wasn’t going to bring BB back for a fifth season. They felt like the end of four was a good conclusion if that happened (though they had definite ideas for season 5 & that wasn’t the actual end of their story)
2. The season being broken up into 2 eight episode mini-seasons allowed them the time they needed in production to ensure the quality was where they wanted it
3. The Denny’s scene - not product placement, they just liked Denny’s as a meeting point so used it again. That was the first scene shot as they did it before Bryan shaved.
4. The machine gun is the same model as Rambo’s
5. AMC exec Brian Bochrath (no idea on spelling) was an electrical engineer st a forklift factory or done thing & helped them with figuring out how to do the batteries
6. All the cops were real Albuquerque police, and that was a real police location
7. Super high security on this season’s footage...nothing is allowed to leave their editing studio, except by Vince, and even what he takes home has a giant watermark
8. That was wasp spray Mike sprayed at the cameras - it’s what burglars might in theory use because it sprays so far up into trees

I have watched this show three times, and now four with you guys, and I have never noticed how much Walt has changed in this episode, compared to the other seasons. He is calm. Prepared. In control. It is scary to watch.
Walt acts like the people he's killed.
The moment Walter said "because I say so" and his face after saying that, to me seemed like Walt becoming Gus. Then the way he talked to Saul and what he said to Skyler at the end just confirmed that.

Walt's not in his 40's. In the pilot episode, Walt turned 50 and was diagnosed with lung cancer. Skyler arranges his turkey bacon into the number 50.
Also I couldn't tell if you guys were able to hear his "Because I say so" moment. It's almost like Walt has a god complex now.

Yes, the writers knew that this would be the final season. The hype at the time for the final 8 episodes was just like the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones, everyone was super excited.
At least these lived up to the hype.

@@NikkiStevenReact It's a much different show, and it is slower-paced. That said, it is amazing and brilliant in its own way. I've seen many differing opinions on this, but I'll just say: I think there's a reason that SOME people even like Better Call Saul more.

@@KyuzouTV BCS peaked at season 3 and Chicanery is the show's masterpiece.
Season 4 is probably the best in terms of pure acting performance from Bob Odenkirk, but a few of the episodes felt like filler. It also had some questionable character plot threads that slowed down the main story too much. That's the most I can say without spoiling anything.
For me, the series become a 9 after season 3, but season 4 dropped it to an 8.5. Let's see if season 5 can raise it.
Vince Gilligan (if I remember correctly) always planned for 5 seasons. He wanted to tell a good story, not a long one. He wasnt interested in drawing it out for money.
He didn't have a specific number in mind. Nothing was planned.
Going all the way back to Season 1 Episode 1 you'll see a similar scene with Walt on his Birthday getting a plate full of eggs and bacon as the number 50, while the scene in S05E01 had a 52 in it. So this is another great throwback from the creators of the show that should remind you how far they've come.

My favorite parts of this episode were when Hank is investigating the lab and they discover the address on the evidence of Gustavo, besides the cold open. Really like the way they did that underground Lab scene with the music and camera work and Hank wearing the hazmat.

Much like Seinfeld, Breaking Bad ended while it was still on top. This was the number 1 show on TV at the time this season aired. Everyone was talking about it and watching each episode was an event. They knew this would be their final season. They chose to end the story.

He was 50 at the start of the season and has not passed his next birthday yet and all the first for seasons until now were less than a year, IMAGINE THAT!!!! But in the cold open it is his 52nd birthday.

Once you guys finish the season, you should react to the Screen Prism videos on Breaking Bad. Don't look them up now, as some of the thumbnails and titles contain potential spoilers for season 5, but they have some very interesting interpretations of different characters in the show. The one I most want to see your reaction to is titled "Gus Fring: Man as Corporation".

@Nikki & Steven React Walt got pissed about Gale because he was getting “credit” for Walt’s work (the meth itself) and his ego couldn’t handle that. With Gus its a different situation. That (building and running the empire) was Gus’ own work Gus is getting “credit” for.

The show runner and writers did know that season 5 was the last one. They made an official announcement that season 5 would be the last season, which would have 16 episodes and be split into part 1 and part 2 which had the last 8 episodes. ALSO, it should be noted that when they were making season 4, they were not sure they would be picked up so they made that finale very conclusive. The wait between each season was a grueling year including between the first part of season 5 and the last part! Keep in mind that the long wait was due to meticulous writing and filming in ABQ.

I noticed the cinematography changed in this certain season. It has become more serious and everything feels intense, every single thing is in panic, running and always moving.

I fuckin love Mike. He never ever EVER takes any of Walt's egomaniacal shit. He's probably the only person on the show, save for Skyler and Gus, who's able to go toe to toe with him, but unlike those two, Mike can truly see Walt. He can see through the bullshit Hisenberg facade and knows behind it is a scared, pathetic old man desperately holding onto this drug Kingpin persona for relevance and personal satisfaction. Mike's just the best.

When Walt says "because i said so" to Mike that is such a chilling moment, because that's when we know that Walt is taking the reins and he's in charge now. When Mike just has to take Walt's shit and can't talk back that's when we know Walt's the new boss.
