I was born in the late 60's growing up in the 70's & my dad would always sing a line *_'I pulled into Fairbanks the city was a boom'_* . I had no idea what it was from and have not heard him say that line in close to 40 years. He passed almost 20 years ago. That line still goes through my head, so today I looked it up and arrived at this song. Now it all makes sense! I felt my dad's spirit with me just now as I listened to this song
I always loved Horton I was always interested in his death I remember reading he knew he was going to die the night he did but he left where he had just performed anyway
I'm biased when it comes to this song, since I was born and raised in Alaska. Still, I think it was one of the best songs ever written and nobody could ever sing it better than Johnny Horton.
My Dad drove us over the Alcan Hiway in 1961 to Anchorage. It was a tough trip because it was a dirt road back then. I was 9 and a little afraid of what I envisioned Alaska to be. Turns out it was a great experience except maybe the 1964 earthquake....
That is the Red Folly show . Johnny Horton was married to Hank Williams Sr. Wife. Handsome men back then..nothing like listening to the old music.thanks for the travel back in time when things were a lot simpler.
Theres a Red Dog Saloon in Oklahoma City where I live. I used to work in the oilfields with my best buddy Joey. He dated a girl who worked in the Red Dog, we sure raised a bunch of hell together!!! What memories......wherever you guys are at, i miss you!!!
I have been listening to Johnny Horton singing these kinda of songs for over 50 years and there is nobody better to sing them know don't get me wrong I like the old songs from Bill Anderson and Johnny cash and alot of the other singers there is no other music to compare the old songs to but Johnny Horton will always be the best
And its not only that he sings his own songs better than anyone else, but imo his cover of Hank and Joe and Me is just delivered much better and is more powerful than when Cash sang it
I went to alaska after highschool. I served i the 813 th aritic combat engineers. 87 to 91. I stayed in alaska to 2002. It was the best time of my life. My wifes wedding ring is made from gold i panned from the creeks. I love alaska best place on earth.
Now this is real music I like this kind of music and I love the classics and I even the classics like the Gemini NASA program the 1960s was a magical time and I love the classics yep that's a nice coat he is wearing !! Keep up the good work on the classics I love Jonny Horton !!
Can't tell a story in a song other then Johnny Horton..Saids it just like it is..sensational singer and guitar player..rhythem and melody is fantastis..a beautiful person in life
I SURE MISS ALL HIS LOVING SONGS SUCH A VERY GOOD VOICES TO SINGS THOSE BEAUTIFUL GREATEST SONGS.WHAT A LEGENDARY LEGACY HE LEFT TO CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO HIS SONGS.I DO LOVE ALL HIS SONGS .
One of my all time favorite! Singer's Because He sang a lot of Songs especially about Alaska!!..One reason because I spent a lot of time in Alaska!! Back then it was unbelievable!! Now it has changed so much!! But have driven the Alaskan Highway!! One more check off My Bucket List!! Next on my List!! Drive Route 66!!! Johnny Horton died too soon!!
When I was a young boy, my grandparents took me on a vacation to Alaska. This song had just made it to the music charts. While visiting Alaska the song was being played in the diners. Every time I hear this song I think of this vacation and my grandparents. ❤
We moved because my husband got a great job offer in Texas. Alaska is a completely different world. It’s beautiful, but depending where you live, will take some time getting used to. We lived on the Arctic Tundra, it was a completely different way of life than most people are used to.
I have always loved this song for a long time my uncle leant it to me and he was a great man I loved him and I know that he loved me so as well and I will never forget him and he name will live on and he did the best that he could and he was a drinker and them kind loved to drank and I love him so
Johnny was a terrific singer and his ballads are haunting. This song tells a story much like El Paso by Marty Robbins. I think I have just about all of Johnny Horton's music. He left us too soon, he was one of a kind. Johnny Reb and Comanche the brave horse were storytelling at it's best. Now, political fanatics have taken down statues and banned books about the Confederate side of the Civil War. What's next?
Poor Johnny always had a fear of being hit by a drunk driver. It was his worst fear. It's terrible that it actually came true. He was hit and killed by one
Nick is correct, 40 below Fahrenheit is, coincidentally, equal to 40 below Celsius, but in the 1950s nobody in Alaska, the lower 48 or Canada used Celsius except a few scientists. So, he was referring to 40 below Fahrenheit. When it's springtime in Alaska it does, occasionally, get 40 below even as far south as the Matanuska Valley on the north bank of the Cook Inlet.

It happened on a bridge and Horton & Co., could not avoid the collision as the bridge was so narrow. Jeeez, after being in touch with a fortune teller (or several ones) he wouldn't take an aircraft...and died in this freaky accident. Talk about being unlucky. He was only 35. RIP
He had a premonition that he was going to die so believable that he gifted his Martin Guitar to another country singer and then it happened at a crossroads in the fog.

The best for sure. I hope he was saved when he left us.

I think it has to go without saying that this is the GREATEST BALLAD EVER WRITTEN.

Love the guitar riff between lines, best version
Now this is real music! I love this man
If Horton had played rock'nroll, he'd be Elvis. What a voice. What a performer!
He was killed by a drunk driver at an early age. Not enough time to make him a number one star. I have loved him since the 50’s.
Better than Elvis dude
I love Johnny and all his songs.
Johnny Horton was a man of his time. Love the song and him. He died too young.
I went to alaska after highschool. I served i the 813 th aritic combat engineers. 87 to 91. I stayed in alaska to 2002. It was the best time of my life. My wifes wedding ring is made from gold i panned from the creeks. I love alaska best place on earth.

My dad's school teacher was Jimmy Driftwood and he wrote many songs for Johnny Horton who sang them wonderfully ❤
That is awesome! Pardon my silly question, but what the hell did "Jimmy Driftwood" teach in school? Music?? Lol

Sometimes I miss living in Alaska.
Did you move away? Honestly, I'm thinking about moving to Alaska lol
We moved because my husband got a great job offer in Texas. Alaska is a completely different world. It’s beautiful, but depending where you live, will take some time getting used to. We lived on the Arctic Tundra, it was a completely different way of life than most people are used to.

My youngest daughter lives in Fairbanks. She tells me The Ted Dog Saloon moved to Anchorage. 😮😮😮
Thanks for posting this. Any info on where/when this was broadcast?
mwms71 It was on The Ozark Jubille if you haven’t found it yet
I think
He and the Big Bopper made some of the first music videos. For instance, this is video tape, not a kinescope.
He would of been one of the greatest western singers
The movie, North To Alaska was a good movie, also a great song.
A beautiful song, in the language of the Czech republik, ( music group Mustangs )." Until spring in Alaska visit us." I"ll put champagne in the cabin.
Look at that FIT
My impression of him is Johnny Horton's A man among men
Looks like the kind of guy that all the girls would like
showing to my kids🎉🎉 2024
All I said was Johnny Horton was a handsome man
And if you didn't like him it was probably because you were jealous
Rumble shake and honky Tonka is rock n roll
31/12/2019
Never forgotten
I had the album one of the few I had but I had that one
Johnny was a terrific singer and his ballads are haunting. This song tells a story much like El Paso by Marty Robbins. I think I have just about all of Johnny Horton's music. Oh the birds and bees please
💗👍
One sings like him!
Poor Johnny always had a fear of being hit by a drunk driver. It was his worst fear. It's terrible that it actually came true. He was hit and killed by one
he was a advocate against alcohol as well
was a very handsome man
Great song, not questioning that. But is he talking minus forty Fahrenheit or minus forty Celsius?
Doesn't matter, they are the same!!!
Dang.. Still so good after all rhis rime.
Spring Time in Alaska is a coming.
I want that coat

Killed by a drunk driver 1960 in texas
Tony Mazzola I believe he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt
He said that how it would happen
Sad ending
It happened on a bridge and Horton & Co., could not avoid the collision as the bridge was so narrow. Jeeez, after being in touch with a fortune teller (or several ones) he wouldn't take an aircraft...and died in this freaky accident. Talk about being unlucky. He was only 35. RIP
@@skinflutey when you see how the carcasse of the car looks... The seatbelt wouldn’t saved him... sadly :/
He had a premonition that he was going to die so believable that he gifted his Martin Guitar to another country singer and then it happened at a crossroads in the fog.
Red Foley emcee?
Yeah! Pat Boone's father in law.
