The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

In the space of about a year, Johnny Horton had three Top Ten hits on Billboard's Hot 100. Had he not died in 1960 - just six months after this performance - he would have been the biggest Country star at that time.
Definitely one of the most beautiful voices of any singer at the time
I believe he woulda had the level of Fame as Johnny cash
@@lukastaylor1397 they were friends imagine the songs we could've gotten with the two
@@goosem944 yes! Johnny Cash locked himself in his hotel room and cried when he heard the news his fishing buddy was killed 😢
The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Too many people fall to this rule
Such a great Singer. It’s hard to believe that Johnny died just 6 Months after this performance.
Also a damn shame the Country Music Hall of Fame hasn't inducted him yet.
@@Starfox2009100 hold on, really?
@@ilvescuso5538 yeah, really. They have basically shunned him.
@@Starfox2009100 he should be in the country music Hall of Fame I don’t know why in the hell he’s not in there!
@@Starfox2009100 Why did they do that?
Why this man is NOT in either the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and especially the Country Music Hall of Fame is such a shame. He truly deserves both.
Likely because his career was cut short before he truly reached his height
I Still Think He Should Have Been In Both
Well said. Agree 👍
“The Singing Fisherman” Johnny Horton: A Very talented man who left us all too soon.
"Sink the Bismarck" was one of Johnny's biggest hits charting at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 around the time of this performance. It is based on the incident in which a German battleship, "The Bismarck" was sunk by the British in May 1941 during World War II. His biggest hit was "The Battle of New Orleans" in 1959, which he also performed on the Sullivan show. Johnny Cash and Horton were close friends. Sadly, Johnny Horton was killed in a car accident later in 1960 at the height of his fame.
Thank you for sharing! 💖 I didn't know he died in a car accident. Makes you wonder... how much we missed out on. Missed your comments. Everyone seems to go wild if your not doing that wonderful description! 🤨 I give up!

@@that70sgirl90 I haven't been reading the comments or watching many of the videos lately as there hasn't been much which interested me in the past few weeks (with an exception or two). I'm looking forward to possibly seeing more of my many requests if they get posted. I also haven't been reading the comments, so I haven't seen people going wild, sounds interesting! Don't give up! :) It always makes me happy to hear from you and your kind comments regarding my descriptions.
@@diegos.loayza3706 Thank you so much! It always feels good to be appreciated!
First time I've seen video of Johnny Horton performing. Thank you!
Get the Bear Family DVD!
The impact of videos like this on a program like Ed Sullivan cannot be understated. Excellent promotion that no doubt resulted in additional record sales and earned Johnny his second Top 5 hit. He would have one more later that year with "North To Alaska" before tragically dying on November 5, 1960 at only 35 years old, RIP
UNrockin Horse Ron - HOLD yer Hi-Tail FOLK TALES!!
YEARS befo' BIG Ed's lil tits SeX Dolls Supremes.
Cum BIG Tex Horton, plus Rock n Roll GREATS like BIG King El with EIGHTEEN TOP $POT BIG Hits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ron Rossmore You sound like a real jerk. No one is pitting Johnny Horton against The Supremes except you. Johnny Horton contributed much to the Country field and The Supremes contributed to their field. How sad that you're unable to contribute anything positive to this forum.
@Ron Rossmore shyman99 posted a great video of Johnny Horton who's signing a song when our world was at war.
What the heck does the Supremes have to do with it? Maybe you should post a video about the Supremes?!
Right on shyman99, this song peaked at number three on Billboard's Charts, but let's not forget that his first hit, "The Battle of New Orleans" was number one for "six straight weeks" and in the top ten for thirteen! I loved this guy for those couple of years he was on the pop charts. Sad day for me when he died.
Excellent! I've heard that song all my (61 yrs); it never gets old.
I haven't heard this song in a long, long time! Never ever saw him! Makes me think of my dad.

I am his biggest fan I have visited his grave in LA !
I’m 50 years old and been listening to Johnny Horton for 45 years, my daughter was only kid in school who knew who JH was
I’m 17 and discovered Johnny Horton on my own, and played battle of New Orleans in front of my bad once and he was shocked that I knew Johnny Horton. It’s been a great way to bond with my dad singing along with great songs I’ve just fallen in love with and he’s loved for years
@@Fyrestare good to see young people listening to the best music ever made I had a picture of Johnny Horton and Elvis together I wish they would induct Johnny Horton to country music hall of fame
Along with the loss of two beautiful ships, at least 1,415 lives were lost with the sinking of the Hood and at least 2,000 lives when the Bismark sank. British warships rescued 111 survivors from Bismarck before being obliged to withdraw because of an apparent U-boat sighting, leaving several hundred men to their fate. But Only three survived with the sinking of the Hood. The three were rescued about two hours after the sinking by the destroyer Electra. I don't know if any of the crew of the Bismark tried to rescue any survivors. I loved this song when I was a child but when I listen to it now, it makes me sad.
History in a song...someone will complain about it and they'll take it away. Love Johnny...rip!
I agree... it's history! My father fought in Korea. I know how important it to know the sacrifices that were made for our country.. I took my son to see the movie Hacksaw Ridge, based on a true story. He was old enough to understand it. They've already done it the schools!
Possible the State of Florida will pass a law that forbids playing this song in schools.
@@chrisnnh I wasn't talking about the song., I was talking about the curriculum. I should've worded my comment differenttly. I'm sorry I confused you. Thank you for sharing! 💖
It is history. just hate the first line.
@@tonylove4800Agreed, as a Canadian.
love this song too
In memory of my Dad's Cousin in England and my Uncle in Western Canada, proud Navy men. Up the RN and the RCN!
That's just great! Bear Family Records released a DVD of his performances in 2012 but this one is missing from that release.
Obtaining the rights for the 2 Ed Sullivan performances was probably too costly.
Still, my favorite country singer till this day. I don't know if he is in the hall of fame, if not, he should be.
I used to be so in love with him lol... This might have brought it back lmao
This song of Johnny Horton happens to be a favorite of mine
Such a great story teller. Love listening to him.
Very great song
A TRUE LEGEND THAT WILL NEVER EVER LEAVE=HE HAS BEEN GONE FOR A VERY LONG TIME,BUT HIS MUSIC WILL FOREVER REMAIN:FOREVER🩷🙏🙏🩷
i was listening to this while building a 1/350 model of the bismarck, awesome video!
Such a great song and a great singer R.I.P Johnny Horton
My history teacher played this song and the battle of New Orleans. He made history fun
What a great singer and great song! I loved his ballads and historical songs! I first heard this song in the sixties when I was a kid! My parents had a console record player/ stereo that came in a cabinet with speakers! It sounded so good! I play the album over and over!
one of the Catchiest ,tunes ever sung...
Johnnie one of the great ones
Great presentation. Thank you for sharing it.
I bet Great Britain love this song.
I bet hood stay at bottom of the ocean
It is really tragic how Johnny Horton died too soon in a car accident. Just imagine what if Johnny Horton lived a full life and died of old age.
Awesome !
I was itty bitty, but I remember my dad having this on 8 track. I didn't know what it was until many years later, but I do remember the large plastic rectangle going into the slot in the dash. I mean, by the time I realized it was 8 track, I was in college. Records were a distant memory... Johnny Horton lived in my heart through all of that, and he is still there to this day!
Easily one of my top ten artists of all time...amazing
I love the sparkly chimey tones coming from the guitar in this version.
thanks for sharing this epic song
Great Song and the best Way to treat the german!
Such a great performance
“Singer” We hit the decks a-running boys and spin those guns around! “Chorus” AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I always thought he did this song to make up for the British being the bad guys in The Battle of New Orleans.
I was just thinking that 🤣
@@gregolson4713 I believe it was made to promote the British movie, "Sink the Bismarck" that came out in the U.S. right around then. It was a British story with no American involvement and they needed a way to get people interested. Great song, but the British and other Commonwealth folks laugh at the beginning line, "In May of 1941, the war had just begun...", given that they'd been fighting the Nazis for nearly 2 years by then.
I was born in 1956. So I dearly wish Johnny Horton did not die in that car accident away too soon and lived a full lifetime, so then I would been able to have seen him perform on a concert tour,
Good career move - don't know if Johnny was planning a European tour that would have included the UK, but considering that we had just fought a war on the same side, I doubt that the line from his previous hit, "...there wasn't quite as many as there was a while ago" would've exactly endeared him to the British public. Sadly, we'll never know - rest in peace, Johnny.

My favorite ww2 song then it was made into a British film in 1960 starting Kenneth More
The 2 British battleships that found and sank the Bismarck were the HMS king George the 5th and the HMS Rodney
*_Rest In Peace Johnny_*
*_Job Well Done, Sir_*
How did this performance garner over 70,000 watches in four days? It usually takes months for a view to get that kind of view ship count. There is a nothing wrong with this performance by any means (much more interesting and better than this channel's consolidated and repeat premieres lately, especially the Everly Brothers again!), but I am really surprised by that this many people watched it in a matter of a few days.
It mystifies my that Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by the Platters has only seen a 1/5 of this many views and that was uploaded back in early April and that song is one of the most famous songs of 1950's. Bizarre.
I seem to recall a schooldays joke about a line of washing and the Bismarck. But the punchline is sadly lost in the mists of time.
Are you sure you're not thinking of the song, "We're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line."? Vera Lynn sang it during the war.
@@JohnCampbell-rn8rz
No, it really is a schoolboy 'joke'. If I recall it involves spies signaling, via a line of washing which includes a pair of unwashed undergarments, that the German warship is leaving harbour.
The punchline involves a pun on 'Bismark'.
No doubt my ten year old self found it hilarious.
@@YorkyOne Aha. Yes, that sounds like it has the makings of a proper schoolyard rib tickler.
On the 24th May 1941 HMS Hood was in the Denmark Strait in pursuit of the Bismark and the Prinz Eugen when she was hit by German shells from the Bismark. She exploded and sank in 3 minutes with the loss of all but three of her 1,418 crew, one of the survivors “Ted” Briggs MBE was from my hometown. He remained in the Navy after the war and served for 35 years and retired in 1973 and died in 2008.
No mention of this terrible loss in the song, seems to be all about the Bismark
We are losing some of the great ones
The sinking of the Bismarck was retaliation for sinking the HMS hood and. Under Winston Churchill's ordered all British battleships were sent to look for the Bismarck and when they found the Bismarck they were to sink it
So American. In May of 1941 the war had just begun. Tell that to Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and the list goes on.
Epic song. As Johnny Horton lost his life three days before the election of John F. Kennedy, one must wonder, if part of his career progression, if he would have been asked to perform this song or 'The Battle of New Orleans' at the Inaugural Ball in January 1961.
Omg that was epic. wait what this was aired in 1960? I thought Johnny Horton died in 1959......
He died in 1960
@@thecrippledrummer now i know my friend
Buddy Holly/Ritchie Valens/Big Bopper were in 1959
The song was much better than the British movie.
1000000000000000000000000/10
Irony. You score a UK top ten hit with a song celebrating a British defeat and then fail to chart in the UK with a song celebrating a British victory.
Sounds like it's saying British ship The hum 0:28
This is what Kayne should be doing.
People wondering who Chrurchill is it was the president back then
He was married to Hank William's widow when he died. She was a young widow twice.
the Bismark was sunk by the Royal Navy after a flight of carrier-based Royal Air Force torpedo bombers from a Royal Navy aircraft carrier had disabled her by taking out her rudders in a torpedo attack, leaving her a sitting target
The Bismarck was a beautiful ship but the country was run by a loon
Correct
Technically hood fired first
What about the string bag.
Invoking the 14th amendment theme song
Not to be mean but what year did he die? I love his music
Dang 1960 I feel bad for him
5 Royal Navy battleships vs. 1 German battleship Bismarck. That wasn't a fair or heroic fight. It was easy to sink the Bismarck. 2000 German soldiers lost their lives on this morning may 27, 1941 at 10:40am.
Great singer but as a re-enactor I’m tempted to say his uniform is Victorian not ww2 style lol
At least it's British. The Americans sometimes forget they did not win WW II by themselves.
@@ronwatson4135 no country won the war by themselves
I know that’s so depressing
And theres a footnote
After he died it was reported to died as he was on his way to meet my hero Ward Bond to sign to be on Wagon Train .in fact tho both died aane day ni such truth to the story some still believe is true.Tomk historian futurs author of Wagons Ho The Ward Bond Story.
Killed by a drunk driver, as he had prophesied.
개처량한 세상.. 피 맺히는 음악..
Pretty much a cookie cutter remake of "New Orleans" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't like "Marches" or "Battle-Songs" 😠...no matter if it was a so called "History of War" or the horrible war we have today! War is cruel...it is, it was and always will be!
But i like Johnny Horton👍 (but not with this song 👎...sorry)
you probably would'nt like Johnny Reb by Horton another top 40 hit. All his big hits were about battles and war/history. he found his niche and had big hits with that music. You would probably like "When it's Springtime in Alaska" which was on his greatest hits album
History is written by the victors. Johnny’s history album is based on propaganda. Lincoln was the worst president ever. Having said that, I LOVE everything he ever recorded. Great artist.
