My dad was a truck driver and I grew up listening to all of Red Sovine's music because of his love of truckin. So tonite, with tears filling my eyes I listen again, because tomorrow we say our final goodbyes as he is makin his last run to that truck stop in the sky.

My Daddy was a long haul trucker. I grew up on these songs. I missed him terribly when he was on the road. But soon as he got home he always took me riding with him and playing this and other trucker songs such as Teddy Bear, and many others. Country today just don't compare. I don't like it, this young country and others that don't tell stories like then. Today, dad's gone, I love him so much, and memories flood back when I hear this song. And so do the tears. Anybody remember when Walmart rigs were cab-overs and they were blue and white? A Walmart driver saved my life in 1987. I wrecked my Mustang on a slick rainy night. As it turns out his name WAS Joe and his truck number was 1309. I came around a curve heading south on highway 61 south out of Muscatine, Iowa and over-compensated and wound up in the ditch. Joe drove me back to the gas station just out of Fruitland. To this day, I still think he was an angel.
Brian when i saw your post you sent chills thru me my name is Logan my handle is the Barbarian and I used to know Joe and that's just the way he was and many of us too ,we would kid him a lot about that truck and his name but he wore it proudly I was young then and had lot's to learn yet , I'm 64 now and trying to retire now , It's hard to let go but these old songs help and it's nice to find people like you who remember us . One of my school friends from about 20 yrs ago lost his Dad. His Dad ran a big rig and got burnt up one day in a terrible accident. This song is a reminder of the great sacrifice good men make. This was my Dad's favorite song. I grew up listening to this song being played on the record player. Dad used to play and sing this song on the guitar. Dad passed away in December 2014, but all of his favorite songs I listen to all the time. My Dad liked Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph....gosh...so many. I know the names of the songs but I forget the artists names. I love you, Dad!! Happy Father's Day!!
I took the full impact from a 46 tonne truck (101,413lbs) at 70 kph to save the people infront of me. Dislocated shoulder, whiplash and torn tendons. Only thing that saved all our lives that day was my reinforced chassis. I miss that truck :'-( I owe her my life
Red Sovine had to have been one of country music's greatest storytellers. His songs were so down-to-earth, sentimental, and could tug at your heart. His own death was somewhat tragic. RIP Red.

I’m a truck driver, my dad was, & my grandfather was. My grandfather was struck by a car & killed on the side of the road while helping an elderly woman change a tire on the Hammond exit on I-94. My dad sounds so much like this it’s eerie. But I can’t help but picture my grandfather being the kind of man who would risk his own life to save another just like the song speaks of. These were my "good old days" when I first began my coast to coast trucking career. The national speed limit was 55 mph, fuel was 18 cents a gallon, cab-overs were in vogue to allow longer trailers which allowed more freight on board but keep under the strict 55 foot overall length, there were no radios just headlight signals and hand gestures to warn of "smokey" or trouble behind you, truckers were courteous to a fault and we were all proud to be so respected by the public who said we were the "kings of the road". These songs and memories of that by-gone America still bring me to tears. But I feel fortunate to have the memories which no one driving semi's today will ever have a chance to enjoy. But I do not miss the all spring ride rigs that would beat you to pieces by the end of each day, with brakes that would heat up and fade away after the second time you pressed down the pedal on a steep grade, and the bias ply tires that sent every road imperfection right up your spine. Not to forget the lack of power steering and dampers to minimize the effects of hitting a pothole that would spin the steering wheel right out of your hands. If you were not careful the spokes in the steering wheel would jamb your thumbs, sometimes even break them. And these new walk-in sleepers were a welcome sight as I neared the end of my 50 year career looking back at the day when you had to climb out of the cab to enter the sleeper until somebody came up with the idea of taking out the cab rear window and cut a hole in the sleeper box so you could just crawl into your tiny 28 inch wide bed. Triplex transmissions were all the rage and are still in use today, but most drivers are not aware that the two other sticks have been replaced by air powered actuators that do the same thing. Yep, those were the days !
This song brings back memories. I remember when I took my driving test. 62 B Model Mack. That was 1974 . Had to retire in 2019. Because of a back injury. Jeez time flies when you're on the road. My darling husband was a old log hauler for over 25 yrs he sure did and still does love it but misses it terribly for he had to give it 2 yrs ago do to his heart but you can tell from a distance how much he misses them old trucks to my sweet darling husband Charlie Brand you are so amazing and I love you dearly

I stumbled upon this song a few years ago because of my interest in trucking songs! Phantom 309 got my attention instantly. I lost count with how many times I listened to this cool song! The song makes me sad because Big Joe was a great guy!! I would love to meet someone like Big Joe!!

My husband was a long haul trucker for 27 yrs same company out of Washington State. He lost his battle with congestive heart failure and respiratory failure on March 7th 2017. He loved his trucker songs
My dad is thankfully still alive gonna turn 80 this year and we are both retired truckdrivers. But these damn songs make me wish i was still behind the wheel sometimes! lolI miss the trucks and driving but dont miss the BS and there gets to be more of that each day in truckin..One old driver trainers said me and him were last of the old time truckdrivers so I'll take that as the highest praise you can get. My grandpa father a truck driver for over 30 years a OTR drove all over the USA missed a lot of family time but boy was he the best damn trucker around remember him telling me stories about making bets that he can back up any kind of truck and he did getting my cdl and gonna take him with me over the road with me every chance I get god bless or truckers 🙏🏽💯

Years ago, when I was a kid, there was a restaurant called Minnie Pearls Fried Chicken. I think. They didn't last all that long, but Daddy liked their chicken. Liked Minnie pearl as well. They had some sort of thing going on where they would give away a record. So we had two of those records. They were just alike, and one of the songs was Phantom 309. I think that was my first favorite song. Maybe along with Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Brings me back a while.
My mom had a stroke in 06 it was snowing on the grapevine and a trucker told the chp I was his wife. I had an all terrain car and a convoy got me through it. My late father in law was a trucker. Thank you for truckers

I don't even know any truckers, but this has lots of nostalgia to me. It reminds me of going back and forth from Indiana to New York with my grandparents on road trips and seeing all the damn semi trucks on the road. As soon as I saw any of the drivers; I would always motion them to honk their horn. The sound made me so happy. I miss those times with them 😭

Takes me back to long rides with uncle in the cab of a big Corbitt, 60 years old, noisy and cold, a pain to drive and more so to steer. On a hill you could pick any gear, she'd pull anything. When uncle died, my cousins CUT HER UP. That was 15 years ago, still haven't forgiven them. He loved that wagon. She was always Ol' Seth's wagon, everywhere we went. The real men knew her a mile off.
@@jonslack7891 that's cold. Kinda like what my mother did to me. My father was killed in a coal mine cave-in. For years he'd wanted a 3/4 ton pickup. Nothing fancy he just wanted to pull his camper with it. When he died i wanted that truck. I told ma but she said the plates were expired. I told her i'd pay everything but she never seemed to have time to do it. One night i comes home from afternoon shift and the trucks gone. I called the cops and they said they didn't have a report, that's what I'm doing ya dimwit. So the next morning i call ma to tell her it was stolen. At this point she tells me she sold it. I know it was just for the money but she didn't really need it. Through the mine pap had an insurance policy that she got it all. She got $114,000 tax free she didn't need the money. This was back in the mid 70's and that was a fair chunk of change. I didn't mind her selling the camper, even if it was for a lot less than it was worth, but i wanted that truck and she knew it. I never forgave her for that. I was pissed, i probably didn't speak to her for about 6 months. People can be totally insensitive sometimes.

@@mmatthews61687 my father left me a 1949 Ithaca 16 ga model 32 featherlite very accurate for a shotgun. He also left a Winchester 30-30 saddle gun with gold inlay and octagonal barrel, paid over $300 in mid 60's, a Springfield. 222 with 14 power scope, and a 22 Hornet (Stephens i believe). I had the Ithaca checked about 25 years ago and they said due to the low serial number it was worth over $800, the others are worth more. The only one i don't have is is the Hornet. That's because i lent it to my brother and he gave it to his father in law to shoot pigeons with. The 1st pidgeon he shot blew the soffit off his house. It's shoots a bullet about the same size as the 222. They are a collectors item since they're not made anymore. I've informed little bro i want my hornet back. I actually hid the rest from my mother. I told her i did. One other shotgun that should be mine is a model 32 Ithaca 16 single shot that belonged ro my grandfather. We were going on our annual family Thanksgiving rabbit hunt and my uncle said he did have any shells for his Remington 12 ga 1100, was a semiautomatic. So dad told him he'd let him use it for the day. When we finished uncle tossed the single shot in his car and left. About a year later Pap was killed in the mine, when i went to get MY single shot the fucker had already sold it for a bottle of whiskey. I was pissed, shoulda kicked his ass. It's sad when you can't trust family. If they'd at least give you a heads up so you could make them an offer, but no. Sadly.a couple years after Pap got killed ma passed from cancer so i kinda had to let that go.
My dad was a trucker too. And he too loved Red Sovine and it's easy to understand why. My dad had an experience close to the one described in the song only it wasn't a crossroad. He was driving eastbound on I-40 coming down Black Mtn outside of Asheville during a winter storm (sometime in the late 60s to early 70s) when a car cut in front of him, he swerved right to avoid plowing through the car and took out one of those big interstate signs (the kind that has support post on either side of the interstate). When my dad asked the statetrooper how many he had killed car the trooper told him none, he hadn't hit a car. My dad asked him was he sure? Because he said he knows he hit them, it was a green car. Witnesses verified my dads story including the color of the car. When the trooper re-examined the front right of the truck, there it was. The green transfer of paint as described. However there was no green car in sight. After causing a wreck and almost getting his passengers and my dad killed, the driver had continued on, probably never realizing how close he had come that day to not getting home at all. So Red Sovine has a lot of meaning to me and this one most of all because my dad could very well have been Big Joe.
Whew! That was a scary story and took place on a dangerous piece of interstate. The four mile grade just outside of Black Mountain was a Hairy ride even in a car back in the 1970's. Saw more than a few 18 wheelers that crashed on that stretch of Interstate as well as running off into the sand traps. Remember one truck that went all the way through the sand trap and flipped all the way over on it's cab and trailer (upside down) at the end of the trap. The four mile grade was no joke! My Dad was a Trucker too.
So sad to see that a lot of our truckers now are foreigners, who do not respect our country, our highways, our citizens on the roads, our truck stops, or our roadsides. And many of whom barely speak English. ~Daughter of a deceased, big rig daddy.

Never heard this song until just now. Brought tears to my eyes. I've known many Big rig drivers through the years. And I have yet to meet one who wouldn't give you the shirt of his back if thats what you needed. I'm sure there are many "Big Joe's" that are in Heaven because they would rather die themselves than take the life of another human. Glad to know now they're angels ridin up & down the roads of this world taking care of their brothers & sisters who still do this lonely, hard, but very necessary job! It would look like a Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories episode. Someday I'll write a story of a Middle East veteran who, while trying to get from Houston to his home in Chicago on his motorcycle encounters a snowstorm...and a mystery trucker who gets him and his bike through the storm.
Used to watch trucks go by my grandparents house coming from the chicken plant going about 70mph back in ‘79. Just bought my black Pete and thought of this song. Ironically the number on the hood was 309……
My dad and his dad were both truck drivers, I grew up listening to this and tons of other old country. One of my first cassette tapes was 16 greatest truck driving hits and this is one of the handful of songs on there that I could tell you every word to. I got my first cassette player when I was about 5.
the black 379x at 2;10 is identical to the one my dad and i built in 89 sadly i lost dad in 92 i carried on the life for several yrs till my kids started to not know who i was so i gave it up truckers are the first to give you a ride when needed and buy you a meal when your hungery
They were mostly back then . But everyone should always respect truck drivers because the bring produce, cars and other miscellaneous things to keep other people happy
Have loved this story since it first came out, listened to when I was in the Navy and the Army. Listened to it while we were in a combat zone and it was one of my favorites when I drove truck for a short while. Red Sovine had a way with these stories, he could tell them and bring tears to your eyes. I am now a 70y/o lady who is disabled and unable to do the things I once did and I still listen to this when ever it is on or when I drag my LP's out and listen to the old music. I was a trucker in Britain. Drove 44-ton tankers most of the time. Often listened to stories of Big Joe and Phantom 309. Wanted nothing more than being a truck driver after watching Convoy at the cinema in 1978. I quit when I was only 40. Driving trucks in the U.K. became an absolute nightmare. Listening to this track and other old favourites has brought a lump to my throat....
This is the first time I have heard this song. I am 16 and this was a pretty cool song till it got to the end and he talked about how Big Joe gave his life for the kids. It sent chills down my spine and I teared up. So sad. RIP Big Joe and Phantom 309

Hi Dave Nolen- I played this song once for my now-13-year-old granddaughter, and she loves it too! I first heard it, when my Stepdad had a tape of c.d. songs. It was one of my favorites, and I found it on here! I had my Granddaughter come over and listen to it with me. She thought it was pretty eerie like I did! I've played songs of this type for my grandkids often when they were smaller, (she and her 12 year-old brother) because these songs are timeless, and part of Americana! I'm glad to see young people like you and these two grandchildren of mine listen to these sorts of folk songs and appreciate them like we older people do!
Drove a cab over International back in 79. This song was one of my favorites. I wonder why there aren't any cab overs these days. I guess they all went the way of phantom 309.

Terry Sharpe me too. I gave up mine. First CDL was special Endorsement class B School Bus. Then went to Class A over the road. Then gave it up because my Kids growing too fast. Gone for a week turns into 3 sad but true. I am now 55. When I just turned 51 got stopped by hi way patrol. He came with ticket book in hand. Looked at my License and said "Oh just had a birthday. Your 51 now. How's it feel?" I replied "Confusing?" He asked "Why? 51 not that old?" I said "I know. But got a question for you..... Last year I was 50. And this year I am 51. Does that make me a 5150?" He laughed said "No I don't think so. I need to pull this on my sergeant. He turns 51 next week. Get your left brake light fixed and thanks for the laugh. Drive safe."
Hang in there Terry..I spent 39 and a half years OTR..And yes I miss it ever since I retired in 2013..I would still be out there today but diabetes made them force me to retire..BUT my heart and soul will forever be behind the wheel of my KW W900 running the west coast..God Bless ya Terry but we must face it..We will forever be truckers..

Been a truck mechanic, driver and lover of old trucks for over 45 years. recently, decided to let my CDL go because my left eye's vision has gotten to the point that I was worried about checking my mirrors. I would never forgive myself if I killed someone because my poor vision didn't let me see someone in that left mirror. No, I wish I could have kept it. Sure. But I'm still a truck driver at heart. You better believe it.
You got that right I did 30 years over 3 million miles with no at fault accidents was blown over by the wind in 2002 in the canyons of Utah, laid up recovering for years got back on the road in 08 ended my driving 2 years ago body cant take it too messed up but I wish I could addicted to the road and I really miss that 1800-2400 a week
I have lots of truckers in my family. But my cousin BJ is my favorite because he let my disabled son check out his awesome rig and sit in it. Boy did my son love it. Truckers are the bomb!!! Much respect for big rigs.

This is the very first time I'm ever hearing this song. Incredible!!! This gave me chills!! It's really amazing that we never make music like this anymore.
Tis not the technology. Starting in the 1990s they compressed the digital music to save on storage. Digital compression takes off the highest and lowest frequencies. Most people cant hear the difference but some can. MP3s are the same. Lossless digital compression is superior to anythign since it can never degrade like vinyl or tape and it does not remove any of the music. Also, modern music is just quick selling soundbites from the past.
These type of songs had substance. Im proud to say I grew up in these old trucker songs cause my dad drove a rig for 50 years. Storytelling at its greatest.

I was born in 1975 my dad an mom was driver's there isn't a truck driving song I haven't heard and at 47 yrs old I can sing 95 Percent of them in my head and still do. Kids now days will never understand what it's like to hear a 4an quarter cat leave the driveway at 1:00 o'clock in morning and wondering if they will c there parents again . I had a good raisin ass whipping win I needed an hugs we I needed. We are missing this now day's cause good old truck drivers are dieng off. All the good ones are gone! God bless!

My dad was a Truck driver and whenever I could I always used to go away with him sometimes just for the day sometimes for 2 weeks and every evening without fail he'd play this to me and I felt so happy, the happiest times of my childhood was when I was in his cab, I felt secure and safe. Well that was when I was 7-8-9 and now I'm 25 and me and my dad no longer talk due to stupid family stuff :( but I always come back to this track when I'm feeling low and it's my time when, even though he lives 100 miles away from me and we don't talk, I feel like im right next to him. a friend of mine drives a truck for the rail road (yep the railroad) and whenever I see him he ends up complaining about how retarded people are around trucks, it seems like trucks bring put the stupidity in some people and cause them to lose all sense and try to cut off trucks or other stupid moves

My dad was a truck driver and I grew up listening to all of Red Sovine's music because of his love of truckin. So tonite, with tears filling my eyes I listen again, because tomorrow we say our final goodbyes as he is makin his last run to that truck stop in the sky.

But soon as he got home he always took me riding with him and playing this and other trucker songs such as Teddy Bear, and many others. Country today just don't compare. I don't like it, this young country and others that don't tell stories like then. Today, dad's gone, I love him so much, and memories flood back when I hear this song. And so do the tears. Anybody remember when Walmart rigs were cab-overs and they were blue and white? A Walmart driver saved my life in 1987. I wrecked my Mustang on a slick rainy night. As it turns out his name WAS Joe and his truck number was 1309. I came around a curve heading south on highway 61 south out of Muscatine, Iowa and over-compensated and wound up in the ditch. Joe drove me back to the gas station just out of Fruitland. To this day, I still think he was an angel.

One of my school friends from about 20 yrs ago lost his Dad. His Dad ran a big rig and got burnt up one day in a terrible accident. This song is a reminder of the great sacrifice good men make. I took the full impact from a 46 tonne truck (101,413lbs) at 70 kph to save the people infront of me. Dislocated shoulder, whiplash and torn tendons. Only thing that saved all our lives that day was my reinforced chassis. I miss that truck :'-( I owe her my life

Red Sovine had to have been one of country music's greatest storytellers. His songs were so down-to-earth, sentimental, and could tug at your heart. His own death was somewhat tragic.

I’m a truck driver, my dad was, & my grandfather was. My grandfather was struck by a car & killed on the side of the road while helping an elderly woman change a tire on the Hammond exit on I-94. My dad sounds so much like this it’s eerie. But I can’t help but picture my grandfather being the kind of man who would risk his own life to save another just like the song speaks of. i grew up on these songs... my mom and dad listened to this, classic country, 50's, and some modern rock... love it...
These were my "good old days" when I first began my coast to coast trucking career. The national speed limit was 55 mph, fuel was 18 cents a gallon, cab-overs were in vogue to allow longer trailers which allowed more freight on board but keep under the strict 55 foot overall length, there were no radios just headlight signals and hand gestures to warn of "smokey" or trouble behind you, truckers were courteous to a fault and we were all proud to be so respected by the public who said we were the "kings of the road".
These songs and memories of that by-gone America still bring me to tears. But I feel fortunate to have the memories which no one driving semi's today will ever have a chance to enjoy.
But I do not miss the all spring ride rigs that would beat you to pieces by the end of each day, with brakes that would heat up and fade away after the second time you pressed down the pedal on a steep grade, and the bias ply tires that sent every road imperfection right up your spine. Not to forget the lack of power steering and dampers to minimize the effects of hitting a pothole that would spin the steering wheel right out of your hands. If you were not careful the spokes in the steering wheel would jamb your thumbs, sometimes even break them. And these new walk-in sleepers were a welcome sight as I neared the end of my 50 year career looking back at the day when you had to climb out of the cab to enter the sleeper until somebody came up with the idea of taking out the cab rear window and cut a hole in the sleeper box so you could just crawl into your tiny 28 inch wide bed.
Triplex transmissions were all the rage and are still in use today, but most drivers are not aware that the two other sticks have been replaced by air powered actuators that do the same thing.

This song brings back memories. I remember when I took my driving test. 62 B Model Mack. That was 1974 . Had to retire in 2019. Because of a back injury. Jeez time flies when you're on the road. Years ago, when I was a kid, there was a restaurant called Minnie Pearls Fried Chicken. I think. They didn't last all that long, but Daddy liked their chicken. Liked Minnie pearl as well. They had some sort of thing going on where they would give away a record. So we had two of those records. They were just alike, and one of the songs was Phantom 309. I think that was my first favorite song. Maybe along with Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Brings me back a while.
My mom had a stroke in 06 it was snowing on the grapevine and a trucker told the chp I was his wife.

I don't even know any truckers, but this has lots of nostalgia to me. It reminds me of going back and forth from Indiana to New York with my grandparents on road trips and seeing all the damn semi trucks on the road. As soon as I saw any of the drivers; I would always motion them to honk their horn. The sound made me so happy. I miss those times with them 😭

Takes me back to long rides with uncle in the cab of a big Corbitt, 60 years old, noisy and cold, a pain to drive and more so to steer. On a hill you could pick any gear, she'd pull anything. When uncle died, my cousins CUT HER UP. That was 15 years ago, still haven't forgiven them. He loved that wagon. She was always Ol' Seth's wagon, everywhere we went. The real men knew her a mile off.

My father was killed in a coal mine cave-in. For years he'd wanted a 3/4 ton pickup. Nothing fancy he just wanted to pull his camper with it. When he died i wanted that truck. I told ma but she said the plates were expired. I told her i'd pay everything but she never seemed to have time to do it.
One night i comes home from afternoon shift and the trucks gone. I called the cops and they said they didn't have a report, that's what I'm doing ya dimwit. So the next morning i call ma to tell her it was stolen. At this point she tells me she sold it.
I know it was just for the money but she didn't really need it. Through the mine pap had an insurance policy that she got it all. She got $114,000 tax free she didn't need the money. This was back in the mid 70's and that was a fair chunk of change.
I didn't mind her selling the camper, even if it was for a lot less than it was worth, but i wanted that truck and she knew it. I never forgave her for that.
I was pissed, i probably didn't speak to her for about 6 months.

@@mmatthews61687 my father left me a 1949 Ithaca 16 ga model 32 featherlite very accurate for a shotgun. He also left a Winchester 30-30 saddle gun with gold inlay and octagonal barrel, paid over $300 in mid 60's, a Springfield. 222 with 14 power scope, and a 22 Hornet (Stephens i believe). I had the Ithaca checked about 25 years ago and they said due to the low serial number it was worth over $800, the others are worth more. The only one i don't have is is the Hornet. That's because i lent it to my brother and he gave it to his father in law to shoot pigeons with. The 1st pidgeon he shot blew the soffit off his house. It's shoots a bullet about the same size as the 222. They are a collectors item since they're not made anymore. I've informed little bro i want my hornet back.
I actually hid the rest from my mother. I told her i did. One other shotgun that should be mine is a model 32 Ithaca 16 single shot that belonged ro my grandfather.
We were going on our annual family Thanksgiving rabbit hunt and my uncle said he did have any shells for his Remington 12 ga 1100, was a semiautomatic. So dad told him he'd let him use it for the day. When we finished uncle tossed the single shot in his car and left.
About a year later Pap was killed in the mine, when i went to get MY single shot the fucker had already sold it for a bottle of whiskey. I was pissed, shoulda kicked his ass.
It's sad when you can't trust family. If they'd at least give you a heads up so you could make them an offer, but no.
Sadly.a couple years after Pap got killed ma passed from cancer so i kinda had to let that go.
My dad was a trucker too. And he too loved Red Sovine and it's easy to understand why.
My dad had an experience close to the one described in the song only it wasn't a crossroad. He was driving eastbound on I-40 coming down Black Mtn outside of Asheville during a winter storm (sometime in the late 60s to early 70s) when a car cut in front of him, he swerved right to avoid plowing through the car and took out one of those big interstate signs (the kind that has support post on either side of the interstate). When my dad asked the statetrooper how many he had killed car the trooper told him none, he hadn't hit a car. My dad asked him was he sure? Because he said he knows he hit them, it was a green car. Witnesses verified my dads story including the color of the car. When the trooper re-examined the front right of the truck, there it was. The green transfer of paint as described. However there was no green car in sight. After causing a wreck and almost getting his passengers and my dad killed, the driver had continued on, probably never realizing how close he had come that day to not getting home at all.
So Red Sovine has a lot of meaning to me and this one most of all because my dad could very well have been Big Joe.
Whew! That was a scary story and took place on a dangerous piece of interstate. The four mile grade just outside of Black Mountain was a Hairy ride even in a car back in the 1970's. Saw more than a few 18 wheelers that crashed on that stretch of Interstate as well as running off into the sand traps. Remember one truck that went all the way through the sand trap and flipped all the way over on it's cab and trailer (upside down) at the end of the trap. The four mile grade was no joke! My Dad was a Trucker too.

So sad to see that a lot of our truckers now are foreigners, who do not respect our country, our highways, our citizens on the roads, our truck stops, or our roadsides.

Never heard this song until just now. Brought tears to my eyes. I've known many Big rig drivers through the years. And I have yet to meet one who wouldn't give you the shirt of his back if thats what you needed. I'm sure there are many "Big Joe's" that are in Heaven because they would rather die themselves than take the life of another human. Glad to know now they're angels ridin up & down the roads of this world taking care of their brothers & sisters who still do this lonely, hard, but very necessary job! My dad and his dad were both truck drivers, I grew up listening to this and tons of other old country. One of my first cassette tapes was 16 greatest truck driving hits and this is one of the handful of songs on there that I could tell you every word to. I got my first cassette player when I was about 5.
the black 379x at 2;10 is identical to the one my dad and i built in 89 sadly i lost dad in 92 i carried on the life for several yrs till my kids started to not know who i was so i gave it up truckers are the first to give you a ride when needed and buy you a meal when your hungery
They were mostly back then . But everyone should always respect truck drivers because the bring produce, cars and other miscellaneous things to keep other people happy

Have loved this story since it first came out, listened to when I was in the Navy and the Army. Listened to it while we were in a combat zone and it was one of my favorites when I drove truck for a short while. Red Sovine had a way with these stories, he could tell them and bring tears to your eyes. I am now a 70y/o lady who is disabled and unable to do the things I once did and I still listen to this when ever it is on or when I drag my LP's out and listen to the old music. I was a trucker in Britain. Drove 44-ton tankers most of the time. Often listened to stories of Big Joe and Phantom 309. Wanted nothing more than being a truck driver after watching Convoy at the cinema in 1978. I quit when I was only 40. Driving trucks in the U.K. became an absolute nightmare.
Listening to this track and other old favourites has brought a lump to my throat....
This is the first time I have heard this song. I am 16 and this was a pretty cool song till it got to the end and he talked about how Big Joe gave his life for the kids. It sent chills down my spine and I teared up. So sad.

Hi Dave Nolen- I played this song once for my now-13-year-old granddaughter, and she loves it too! I first heard it, when my Stepdad had a tape of c.d. songs. It was one of my favorites, and I found it on here! I had my Granddaughter come over and listen to it with me. She thought it was pretty eerie like I did! I've played songs of this type for my grandkids often when they were smaller, (she and her 12 year-old brother) because these songs are timeless, and part of Americana! I'm glad to see young people like you and these two grandchildren of mine listen to these sorts of folk songs and appreciate them like we older people do!

I gave up mine. First CDL was special Endorsement class B School Bus.
Then went to Class A over the road. Then gave it up because my Kids growing too fast. Gone for a week turns into 3 sad but true.
I am now 55.
When I just turned 51 got stopped by hi way patrol. He came with ticket book in hand.
Looked at my License and said "Oh just had a birthday. Your 51 now. How's it feel?"
I replied "Confusing?"
He asked "Why? 51 not that old?"
I said "I know. But got a question for you..... Last year I was 50. And this year I am 51. Does that make me a 5150?"
He laughed said "No I don't think so. I need to pull this on my sergeant. He turns 51 next week. Get your left brake light fixed and thanks for the laugh. Drive safe."

Hang in there Terry..I spent 39 and a half years OTR..And yes I miss it ever since I retired in 2013..I would still be out there today but diabetes made them force me to retire..BUT my heart and soul will forever be behind the wheel of my KW W900 running the west coast..God Bless ya Terry but we must face it..We will forever be truckers..
Terry, I'm 73. Been a truck mechanic, driver and lover of old trucks for over 45 years. recently, decided to let my CDL go because my left eye's vision has gotten to the point that I was worried about checking my mirrors. I would never forgive myself if I killed someone because my poor vision didn't let me see someone in that left mirror. No, I wish I could have kept it. Sure. But I'm still a truck driver at heart. You better believe it.
You got that right I did 30 years over 3 million miles with no at fault accidents was blown over by the wind in 2002 in the canyons of Utah, laid up recovering for years got back on the road in 08 ended my driving 2 years ago body cant take it too messed up but I wish I could addicted to the road and I really miss that 1800-2400 a week
I have lots of truckers in my family. But my cousin BJ is my favorite because he let my disabled son check out his awesome rig and sit in it. Boy did my son love it. Truckers are the bomb!!! Much respect for big rigs.

the cool thing about records back then was that vinyl recorded the actual vibration of the sound. digital can never beat that in my opinion.

Tis not the technology. Starting in the 1990s they compressed the digital music to save on storage. Digital compression takes off the highest and lowest frequencies. Most people cant hear the difference but some can. MP3s are the same. Lossless digital compression is superior to anythign since it can never degrade like vinyl or tape and it does not remove any of the music. Also, modern music is just quick selling soundbites from the past.
These type of songs had substance. Im proud to say I grew up in these old trucker songs cause my dad drove a rig for 50 years. Storytelling at its greatest.

I was born in 1975 my dad an mom was driver's there isn't a truck driving song I haven't heard and at 47 yrs old I can sing 95 Percent of them in my head and still do. Kids now days will never understand what it's like to hear a 4an quarter cat leave the driveway at 1:00 o'clock in morning and wondering if they will c there parents again . I had a good raisin ass whipping win I needed an hugs we I needed. We are missing this now day's cause good old truck drivers are dieng off. All the good ones are gone! God bless!

My dad was a Truck driver and whenever I could I always used to go away with him sometimes just for the day sometimes for 2 weeks and every evening without fail he'd play this to me and I felt so happy, the happiest times of my childhood was when I was in his cab, I felt secure and safe. Well that was when I was 7-8-9 and now I'm 25 and me and my dad no longer talk due to stupid family stuff :( but I always come back to this track when I'm feeling low and it's my time when, even though he lives 100 miles away from me and we don't talk, I feel like im right next to him.

Jake I see you posted this 3 years ago I pray you two have mended fences by now ,But if not take this advice from an old trucker do it .It will be the hardest thing you will ever do but the reward will be greater than you can imagine . I know I almost waited to long to do the same with mine .And we never regretted it .A father's love really never dies

a friend of mine drives a truck for the rail road (yep the railroad) and whenever I see him he ends up complaining about how retarded people are around trucks, it seems like trucks bring put the stupidity in some people and cause them to lose all sense and try to cut off trucks or other stupid moves

I remember this song on radio stations back 1970s my dad favorite song and mind too. My dad was trucker like my uncle and my dad sister husband was kind like Jerry Reed was so funny and time come by vist listen all story's. On road. My dad lots story's even hear it at truck stop back 1984. Lots great memories. Awesome song.

my best friend he had been a trucker his whole life and taught me the ropes in early 80s i rember waving at him as he left terminal in his brand new white cabover it was the last time i saw him he was 2 weeks from retirement with over 2 million miles under his belt he was hit headon 5 states away he never came home
