  • Back by popular demand! This is one of my favorite videos. Check out the elated expression of the lady in the white coat toward the end of the movie. Pure joy!

This was taken two years before she became the RHMS AUSTRALIS and Later in 1968 the S S Australis. She was a beautiful ship that l was lucky enough to travel on three times. Sadly she sank in 1992 after being sold four times and each time being badly neglected. A sad ending for one amazing ship.

That was one of the better shipboard home movies I've seen. They really looked like they were living it up.

When you were on board the America, it was like having a warm and comfy blanket wrapped around you. ☺️ 🛳

We boarded her in 1977. I've never since been on a ship that matched the quality of her construction. She was very special and like you said, made you feel warm and cosy. We spent many afternoons in what I think was the ballroom, with it's lovely lounges and luxurious thick velvet curtains. Staff were exceptional also. I would have happily spent the rest of my life on her. My brother has photos and kept one of the newsletters they would leave in your cabin. After many years I googled what had become of her and almost wished I hadn't. So very sad to see the disrespectful manner in which she was discarded and left to decay. It affected me more profoundly than the loss of any house or residence ever did. This was the magic, the charm of the SS America - later the SS Australis.
Modern garish cruise ships cannot match the understated elegance and class of this beautiful ship.

It's shame she had such a sorry end...That's the problem with our society, everything is thrown away, even the most beautiful things we build.

SS America was a beautiful Ocean Liner. She a illustrious life, & to see reduce to nothing on some godforsaken beach is sad. Almost as sad as being scrap.

Absolutely gorgeous footage, thank you and what an incredible history the America had... one of the most interesting and remarkable of any liner. Do we also see the Big U berthed at Pier 86 at the beginning?... Love it - Mark, Brisbane Australia.

The SS US is in dry dock still in the US gradually declining each year they don’t do anything about her much publicised return to slender. The SS American sank on 1992 in Feortoventura of the Spanish coast.

@@ritageorge2348 yes, the USS United States is at its mooring up in PA but not in dry dock, yes she is suffering as there isn't funding for her.. The SS America broke her tow line and drifted up as mention on the Canary Islands. A sad end to her. My first post was my "dream" of seeing them in their grander. A sad end really to two grand ladies.

The problems with movies like this is that you see virtually nothing of the ship! Waste of time
