I so love malicious compliance stories. When you get what you asked for while being a jackass is do satisfying.

I've lived in areas where the city granted a monopoly to a company for trash pick up (I believe they call it a "franchise", but I could be wrong). Once the service deteriorated sufficiently, they granted the franchise to a different company. I now live in the county where you contract personally for trash service. It's less expensive and is run by a mom-and-pop company where she does all of the billing and he does all of the trash pick up. There are several different mom-and-pop companies doing this in my area. Competition keeps the price down and the service up.

Absolutely! That's why Ma Bell was broken up back in the day. They were the ONLY phone company in the USA. They could charge whatever they wanted and you couldn't just go to the competition.
After the break-up, the price for service went down and quality went up.
Service that has to compete for business is always better.

that is only a problem if it is a private company, I live in Berlin and we have the BSR (Berliner Stadtreinigung) for most trash, they are a company that is in possession of the city Berlin, the only problem I have with it is that the board is basically run by politicians from Berlin, that make some demands before elections to show "they did something good" in hope of reelection

@@Bleg94 I haven't had your good luck with government run monopolies. The Department of Motor Vehicle is a running joke of lazy incompetence, and don't get me started on how bad the government run monopoly of public schools is.

My city is currently waging war on ridwell, a company that recycles what other companies say can't be recycled. The garbage unions are threatening lawsuits and the city just got rid of the service.

    Story 1: Classic Manglement.
Story 2: I don't get how any neighborhood does not have one garbage day for everyone. Crazy!
Story 3: The Peter Principle at work.
Story 4: WIN! Play by the rules and come out a WINNER!
Thanks to all 4 OPs and KCC for this episode.

Story 4 isn't a win. Story 4 might be the reason that the store abandons it's return policy completely and just stops accepting returns. The're not legally required to do so.

One company doing all the trash in the US is another opportunity for corruption and collusion. Govt is corrupt. This way the residents at least have a choice. Their elections are not competitive.

The garbage trucks in my town are run by the city.
We have dumpsters in the alleys (one for every 3 houses) except for some houses that don't have an alley way behind them. They use wheelie bins.
Trash pickup is every Tuesday, except for businesses, which have a pickup every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Where I live, (Massachusetts) trash is picked up by one company but is picked up on different days depending on what part of the city you live. The surrounding cities are the same. Has been that way for as long as I’ve lived here. I’m 71 and lived here all my life.

Same for me, the city is too large to do everything in one day, and this provides job financial security for the pickup crews: work five days a week instead of one.

Many residential areas in the USA are not in the city limits, but in unincorporated areas. That means that there is no city to provide trash pickup. Residents must contract on their own. Also, many cities and towns do not provide trash services, and residents there also must contract for themselves.

My town has a contract with a garbage company but my mom has to pay for weekly pickup cause we live just barely out of city/county limits.(Town we live in & can get to by bike is county A, house outside village limits is county H)

At least your mom can get pickup! When I lived in Arcadia I had to take my garbage to the dump as there was no garbage company in the area. It was such a hassle!

Trash Story: It's possible that the HOA covers more than 2 streets and if those streets are on the edge of a trash pickup zone, the HOA could actually be in 2 different zones so have 2 different Trash Pickup Days...

Story 4: At the end of the transaction I would have said to the returns person "Have a nice day!" in a very sing-song voice while smiling a huge toothy grin :D

And if I were the shop owner/manager, I would have banned that customer from the store. I'd say that commenter was right, but the customer is the dog pooping on the floor. There is no legal requirement for any (offline) store in Europe to accept a return of a functional item, so them offering a return for a voucher was actually already pretty nice and the customer is basically an arsehole about it. And as the returns manager, I'd have given him the refund in the way he paid, so he would have ended up with a voucher again.

Sounds like the manager only got the job due to her "Oral Skills".
(I don't think it was the speaking kind.)

In German we have the word "weggelobt", it's basically when you praise an incompetent manager to the point that this person gets promoted out of your line of command and becomes someone else's problem. My guess is that this happened here.

In story 4 the shop was actually pretty nice in offering a voucher. There is no law in Europe stating that any store has to accept a return on an item that isn't defective, and even then they can offer you a replacement. If they fail to give you a working replacement item three times or so, then you can demand your many back. But the customer decided to be an arsehole about it. As a manager I would have banned him from the store.

How is he an asshole for following the (very stupid) policy to the letter?

    • @MyRegardsToTheDodo
      @MyRegardsToTheDodo ปีที่แล้ว

@@oldmanjim2376 It was his mistake to buy items he didn't actually need and that the shop can't sell anymore once they are returned, he could have accepted the voucher they offered him (which again, they didn't have to do). Instead he went and bought another item, that the shop again can't sell anymore after he returned it, and was totally proud that he showed them who's the man. And he fully well knew that he was in the wrong here. It's because of "customers" like him that the shop might go and stop accepting returns at all. And of course the shop should have given him a voucher again for his second return, because that's the way he paid for the item (I know a lot of shops that actually do that).
