  • This is how I collect records. A few simple record collecting rules that I live by. That makes my collection the best for me and makes collecting more exciting and fun. Also a good way not to get flooded with too many records (yes, you can have too many).

    I listen to a lot of the TH-cam videos while driving to and from work every day so I don’t always comment. But I had to go back and see what the fuzz was about here in the comments. 😀
    As you know we collect differently you and I and that is obviously fine. We have the same taste in music but our tummy tingles for obtaining different records. I think a lot of people out there has a lot to thank you for. They would prob only not have what they have in the shelves if it weren’t for guys like you pushing the information about the music. It’s one thing to be a fan, listening to and searching out the obscure music but you have done that AND shared it online for years and years. Spreading g the word.
    Maybe I got away from the subject here. Any way. The last paragraph is as you say the most important. You are the master of your own collection and collecting habits.
    Deepest respect!! Continue to do what you do Jonas and for the love of god, keep the videos coming!!! ❤

      Thanks so much Jonas! It's not a big deal really, and some of the comments have been removed now (not by me). Like the one "You’re an authistic purist, not a music lover, therefor your manifesto is pure bullshit" Haha! 😂
      And the same to you, you have been spreading the word for as long as I remember, I love your channel and my wantlist always expands after seeing your videos! Take care and have a great midsommar!! ❤️

    Great video, lovely to see how sane vinyl enthusiasts collect. Your manifesto is an intelligent way to avoid you collection spiralling out of control.
    There's no way I could be so steadfast in abiding by rules. I'm a vinyl scavenger by nature. I don't know what I'm going to buy until I see it.
    Luckily I adhere to some of your rules by default. Many of the records I collect only had one pressing, so I don't have much choice in pressings. Yay!
    One of my favourite folky country albums from the 70s is by a group called The Flatlanders. The album was originally only released on 8-Track tape. I'm sorry, there's no way I'm seeking that out a good 8-Track player to play one 8-Track tape.
    Good luck on your quest.
    Cheers - Hedley

      Hey Hedley! Don't know about that "sane" part though 😂 I haven't gotten so deep that I'm looking for 8 tracks, yet. But I have a friend here who collects 8 tracks, it's amazing how many obscure titles he's found, even old Swedish prog/psych releases. I have to check The Flatlanders, thanks for the tip. Take care and thanks for commenting!

    That was great stuff, Jonas. Of course, to each their own like you said. Rules are meant to be personal, not for a group. I am nearly exclusively a collector of originals for many of the same reasons as you. In general, I think everyone should have a manifesto or set of guidelines that informs their buying habits, otherwise you end up buying everything and often listening to nothing. A big 'limiter' for me is space; I have a certain amount of space that I am willing to dedicate to records, so I have to have guidelines, but mostly I enjoy the sounds of the way the album came out originally. I do have a few albums that came out on cassette originally and those are the formats I have hose albums in.
    Anyway, very enjoyable video and thank you for sharing.
    Cheers, Tom

    • @vinylstockholm
      @vinylstockholm  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi Tom! Sounds like we have similar view on collecting. Space is also an issue for me, and when a collection gets too large, you loose your connection to it. I think of a collection like a breathing organism. Records in, records out. But after each breath, the collection gets a little bit better. Now I'm spacing out a bit, but anyway. Thanks for sharing your views. Take care!

    • @highrantdistrict
      @highrantdistrict 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@vinylstockholm We ARE alike! You refer to your collections as a 'breathing organism,' and I refer to mine as 'fluid' (I like your description better). I have no problem parting with albums that I don't want to listen to anymore. Killer over filler.

    Hey Jonas, new subscriber thanks to HarrisPiltons shout out, some interesting takes you have there, I'm wondering the Beatles album you don't own, I'll guess either Beatles for sale or LIB? I have loads of Los Angles doowop comps that I love, actually I've just remembered some of those are on Swedish labels, but finding those on vinyl, I'd look and feel like Moses if by some miracle I happened to succeed, and as for completists, well I've an awful funny feeling I'm going to be a beach boys completist one day, which is absolutely nuts if you've heard anything at all about their later turkeys!! Cheers!

Good guess, but I have both LIB and For Sale. I don't have Yellow Submarine and With the Beatles at the moment, but records come and go here. Good rules tailored to your personal collection, no doubt. Good for others too probably, as long as you don't take them too literally and pedantically! Just be aware that there are other approaches to collecting very different from your own. Once you seriously start collecting the records of a certain artist you particularly like, for instance, you WILL want later pressings and formats to complement the original, and you WILL want cheapo compilations that have a song of your collecting interest on them. Without "completists" there would be no discographies out there, as you need all the records to write a good one! And then there's historically motivated collecting, like assembling all issues by a certain label in numerical order to learn what they did at the time (a popular pastime with 45s), which WILL bring a lot of music into your house that you don't particularly like, and with it comes the risk of ignoring good music because "it is on the wrong label". In the end, many roads lead to Rome as they say! Any real collecting that is more than ticking off the Record Store Day list every year in the hope that the things raise in price, but is born of a love either for certain music, or a certain product from a bygone era, or both, is worth pursuing in a way that makes your personal life better every day :)

    Though I don't have so many stringent rules I follow when it comes to buying records for my own collection, I do have a life-long goal/project that I'm S-L-O-W-L-Y working towards, in that I want to own a 1st pressing copy, as close to mint as possible, of every record in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book. In that goal, the records HAVE to be 1st pressings, that is non-negotiable...as you can imagine I'm achieving this only incredibly slowly, with only around 50 of the records being accumulated so far

    Everyone has guidelines and rules about record collecting. Do you grab every single polka record you see? No? Then you have a rule not to fill your collection with polka records. That’s all this is, and they’re pretty good rules I think. I do break the first pressings only rule if the first pressing is thousands of dollars.

    Question so with your 2nd rule I’m guessing that includes movie soundtracks?

    • @vinylstockholm

      Yes! The last rule is the most important for sure. Soundtracks are fine if there's original music, I have for instance the Twin Peaks soundtrack and Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack. #4 is interesting- I collect 90’s hip hop, which was released on CD, so the reissues are digitally sourced and often are double or even triple albums due to the amount of tracks contained on CD’s, and the vinyl can be over 50 euros, so why not collect the original CD for a fraction of the price in it’s originally intended format? You can collect 90’s hip hop singles of your favourite track’s although those are much harder to find but I do have fun hunting them

      Hi Dean, excellent point, that's my thought too. This mostly applies to records from the 90s, when CDs were standard. As you said, the artist started making longer albums, as the CD could hold more minutes, so the vinyl releases are often 2 LPs (and pressed from a digital source). So for me in these cases the original CD is better and much cheaper! Now, I'm just repeating what you said, but I totally agree. Good luck hunting those hiphop singles. Cheers!

    Was very curious to watch what your manifesto was but I could NOT AGREE LESS. What a terrible idea!! What a ridiculous list of rules and restrictions. Most important thing for collectors is ITS THE MUSIC. Many collectors do not live in big cities or Europe to find rare first pressings. Many do not have the $$ or access to first pressings. Many reissues sound fantastic or better than OG’s. Singles are annoying and hard to store plus buying only vinyl is snobbery and limits your collection. I’ve collected for 5 decades now since the 70’s and have seen many trends and fads. You do you but your list is very negative and to me limiting and dumb. 😊
