fantano didn’t like my current aoty, so i think it’s okay that he gets a lot of hate, and could use a lil more actually. Genuinely though, it sucks that most people aren’t going to give this a try after this review. He didn’t even talk about how the record is continuous except for 90% of the runtime, which is where I think the feelings of sameness come from.
i got the vinyl right yesterday night from the singer... they played an amazing show in Modena... here in Italy. This record is one of my favorite in this 2024
Been a fan of these guys since finding the Those That Left, Those That Remain EP while looking for new releases to spin on my college radio show in 2017. It’s really nice to see them getting so much attention now. Thanks for giving them the exposure!
Yeah nearly 15 years of watching this dude...and his tastes regarding extreme music in particular still have absolutely no rhyme or reason. Thought this would be yellow flannel material haha
Mr. Fantano sir, I kindly request you perhaps consider reviewing the newest album from Australian band Eunuchs. I think there are some really great things happening on that record, some that your audience may also find comparable results. Also I've always wondered your thoughts on Gaza, the late 2000s hardcore group. I always come back to their second album, very visceral.
Fantano’s bias is showing again. If this album was never released, then you wouldn’t have rated it at all, but since it’s available to listen to on all platforms, you give it a score? Classic L from Dogthony Fartano
And if it was released he probably would’ve given it a 6/10 simply because it feels kind of one-note despite the band's tight performances and exciting combination of extreme music styles smh
Great review, I just don't understand why you went on a tirade about how flowers aren't real and that they're a government scheme halfway through the video...
Thank you for reviewing this, it’s been one of my favorite records of the year and I think it’s an improvement from their last effort. Please review the new Locrian album :)
tbh i wish i enjoyed this album more. i was so stoked to listen to this because i love A Brief Memoriam and that record got me through a rough patch, but this one just didnt stick with me that much. It's def good, just not super memorable ig
A Brief Memoriam is a tale of Lowell’s grieving for his dead mother, so of course it’s naturally more emotionally resonant. Haven’t listened to this one yet, but I have no expectations of liking it more than ABM. Still a 5-6/10 is ridiculously low in my humble opinion.
@@perhaps1094 no idea what you’re talking about, I quite literally didn’t score the album anywhere in my comment. I said I’d probably like it less than ABM because that album was special to me and that Anthony giving this new one a 5-6 was way too low since I’m a big fan/friend of the band.
Please review "This Could Be Texas" by English Teacher, it's amazing. It's probably a top 3 album of the year so far. They're a new british band, from the new wave started by groups like BCNR and black midi, you should absolutely check them out if you haven't already
Tbh I think their previous LP In Memoriam is a better intro. If we're talking screamo in general these bands are good intro: City of Caterpillar, Saetia, Daitro, pg99, Circle Takes the Square. Will let you get a taste of some of the diversity in the genre.
I love this album in its entirety but I feel like that is what throws me off about it. It needs to be an entire listen through or not no listen at all but in my mind it’s like a 8.5 out 10 album
You’re wrong and here’s why, This album isn’t any more “one note” than most Skramz albums and I’d argue that this is stylistically more advanced and formally intricate than most bands in the scene today. The lyrical content is utterly devastating and the production’s burying of the vocals is almost a symbol of the the vocalist trying to remain guarded during a moment of extreme vulnerability.
I mean...just getting this review is cool. Take that as a win! Keep making art and those out there that appreciate (of which there are many), will continue to appreciate! I will always try and catch Fail Body live in Chicago. You should do the same.
Wish you reviewed more metal albums. You don't do nearly as many and unfortunately miss on so many releases (ex: Pharmacist from Japan, who were making a mini wave)
Good quality stuff, good vibes, quite beautiful. It all flows together, I can’t separate a single song, and it’s a vibe when driving. I was at the album release show, and look forward to them continuing to blow up and make great things.
Its a loose therm i guess. First time I've heard it it was to refer to post rock infused screamo bands (envy, funeral diner) but recently people are also grouping screamo bands with post metal and blackgaze influence. So idk.
Please review Something Beyond Kindess by SBK!! He’s a young grime mc but he’s just released a nearly entirely self-produced album that experiments with new genres- it’s truly worth the listen!
Really glad you reviewed this, as I'm sure it's going to make people check them out regardless, but this is a rare L in your heavy reviews, in my opinion... Screamo, yes, but I personally have to strain my ears to hear anything to do with post-metal, let alone black metal... And I have to say I slightly checked out of the review when you said the record lacked dynamics. It's a shame you didn't reference the lyrical subject matter, as I think it explains why it sounds so consistently anguished, notwithstanding the genre(s) the trio inhabit.
LOL sometimes it's impossible to know what Anthony will like. On one hand he'll give an hour long black metal noise song a 10, yet this is one note and 6/10? I can't even with this guy right now
Bummer! It's my AOTY so far and I thought you'd dig it because the songwriting is way better than average skramz. I'll say it feels a bit monotonous at first listen, but the layers come out upon repeated listens.
Fantano looks like he’s getting more of a frail body lately. Hope he’s doing okay. You know what I think would make him all better? If he reviewed Jobe VII. I am still not Jobe. I’m not Jobe. I’m not Jobe. I’m not Jobe. I’m. Not. Jobe. I am a friend and big fan of his, but not Jobe. I just run his channel. It is wonderful to see another rock review from Anthony and this stuff is right up my alley. I have always been a fan of more emo-adjacent black gaze kind of metal with bands like this and Deafheaven. Those math metal influences are not my favorites though, I’m much more of a fan of math rock personally but that’s alright. I don’t mind. Jobe doesn’t really dip into that, instead taking a softer approach to alternative rock. Some of his songs, in my opinion, sound like they were pulled straight out of a nineties alt/grunge album. He actually just dropped a new single today that fits that mold perfectly. It’s pretty good, I recommend it. It has interesting Latin percussion as well as some clean acoustic guitar chords and sharp, cutting electric guitar in the chorus. It’s a good time. His next album, from what I know, is also shaping up to be pretty good. He hasn’t showed me anything, but from this new single I’m very excited. Super hyped if you review Jobe. Thank you. You’re the best. :-)
Screamo is peak Punk rock i love when Fantano reviews this type of stuff on a rare occasion but i hate the metal influences on this record especially bm 😒
I don't really hear that much black metal influence though? Like, most of the "black metal" riffs and drums would be at home in an Orchid song, which is decidedly screamo and not BM. I heard maybe 2 or 3 BM influenced moments.
This is honestly one of my favorite records of the year so far. Glad you took the time to review it

Yeah this might end up being my AOTY. I’m truly obsessed.
He said a lot of the influences at the start@urkoma
Same. It's absolutely brilliant. If it's derivative name what it sounds like. Less than 5 minutes is slacking

unfortunately the worst take of the year

Cal continues to be the MVP of the “theneedledrop” channel.

I can’t believe this review is just Anthony saying “screamo time” for 5 minutes
Loved this record, one of the harshest things i’ve heard. Surprised you didn’t like this or at least have runaway in your favorite tracks.

I wonder if Mr. Melonhead has ever been a victim of emoviolence himself
If it was called “To pimp an artificial butterfly,” it definitely would’ve gotten a ten

Gouge Away - Deep Sage please!!
Brutal and powerful sounding album but it's very derivative, sounds a lot like Converge with not as good songs
