Simple reason: Cars like to go fast. Sonic likes to go fast. Gas stations sell chili for nachos, and hot dogs. Sonic likes chili dogs. Gas stations sell gas. Cars like gas.
Legitimate thanks for covering this unimportant mystery that I always wondered about but never looked into. Also the short length and light-hearted content on this one is a good palette cleanser between your darker videos.
honestly, gas stations (especially at night) have an otherworldly vibe. the other night we were goming home from my cpusin's house at like 1 am and we stopped at the gas station down the street for some snacks. The parking lot was nearly empty, and I was sitting alone in the car with the windows down. Something about the emptiness, along with the bright fluorescent lights and the echoing speakers that dinged an ad for food every now and then felt like something from a dream
They really are. I was doing a road trip on I-80 and stopped in Wyoming at night during a light blizzard and it looked like a liminal space to me. The gas station being lit with no one else there, with some snow, and just pitch black darkness as soon as the lights end.
No one will read this, but I was one of the first certified Passport installers in my state. I had the pleasure of installing this system in MANY stores. It's a windows-based system effectively. There are reports of customers "customizing" the sounds, but there are periodic program updates that are supposed to revert them back. That "Uh Ohh!!" is forever ingrained in my head...the one you hear upon age verification for smokes or beer.
whats actually happening is that the alternate universes collide at convenient stores, and whenever you hear that ring sound, thats the sound of currency being used in that alternate universe.
@@gamingjay141 Everyone keeps saying that, and I kind of agree. I don't think it makes much sense for Microsoft to compete against their own PC brand with Xbox. Although, I can also see consoles themselves going obsolete and everybody starting to push PC/Mobile gaming. Additionally, I can see several companies starting up their own "Game Pass" like service, clouding up the market and making things more complicated, like with Netflix and all those other streaming services that popped up over the years. As a collector, that kind of saddens me, but maybe it'll be more convenient for everyone.
Dreamcast is never dead.Theres still new games being made for the console by certain developers and for hackers and running roms and burnt discs it's a fun system to mess with.
"I absolutely needed to know why gas stations used this sound, running out of options and feeling desperate, I booked a flight to Japan." Sorry, any video that's about solving something inconsequential just reminds me of Nick Robinson.
@@TheFlamingMarshmallow As stated, it's likely this only occurs with Gilbarco Veeder-Root cash registers. However, not every convenience store uses them, so they wouldn't have the Sonic rings sound effect.
@H A R I've never heard it either and I've always been in Illinois, and not even some backwater midwest town either, I live in a big city with over 100k people
I started watching Nexpo videos when I was deeply depressed because it's easier to cope with depression when you translate sadness into creeping fear. Now every time I hear the Nexpo theme I just feel intensely relaxed. I think I have broken my brain. Thank you Nexpo.
I'm in the UK, and while I've never heard a cash register make the ring sound from Sonic, I did hear one (in a Sainsbury's) making the sound that plays when you jump over a barrel in Donkey Kong.
God, I am always extremely embarrassed whenever my card isn't read properly and the machine loudly annouces "Oh no." Even worse is hearing "Aw yeah! This is happenin'!" every time I pay in cash and the register needs to be opened.
i think i read somewhere that its almost impossible to copyright sound effects because they don't fall under the category of music and in a few cases where companies did take each other to court "disney vs whoever" disney would always lose because of that.
@Astolfo I think it might be predominantly a US thing. I live there, and I hear those damn register sounds all the time. It kinda freaks me out every time I hear it, like, "wait wtf, is that the Sonic ring sou--oh, wait, shit, that's just the register."
I've noticed something similar to this, a lot of cars made after 2013 have a noise they make when you hit the electronic lock button on your key fob. It sounds exactly like a sound file from Halo Reach that comes from buttons you can interact with during the campaign. It's three high pitched beeps, can't really explain it any better but if anyone else knows what I'm talking about that would be pretty neat.

Resident Evil 1 Save Room is pretty chill tho
Legitimate thanks for covering this unimportant mystery that I always wondered about but never looked into. Also the short length and light-hearted content on this one is a good palette cleanser between your darker videos.
Or maybe... it's Sonic using convenience store sound effects?!
oh god senpai noticed me

*oh*
honestly, gas stations (especially at night) have an otherworldly vibe. the other night we were goming home from my cpusin's house at like 1 am and we stopped at the gas station down the street for some snacks.
Gas stations feel like save spots/rooms in video games.
Why do cash registers play the sonic sound effect? *Spooky music plays*
Frizzurd or the drowning music
The spooky music is Aquatic Ambiance from the 1994 Super Nintendo game Donkey Kong Country by david weiss.
Dkc water levels are the only water levels in games I genuinely love
No one will read this, but I was one of the first certified Passport installers in my state. I had the pleasure of installing this system in MANY stores. It's a windows-based system effectively. There are reports of customers "customizing" the sounds, but there are periodic program updates that are supposed to revert them back. That "Uh Ohh!!" is forever ingrained in my head...the one you hear upon age verification for smokes or beer.
If the cash register gets robbed, does it make the "Sonic dropping all his rings" sound?
Why isn't this hearted? This is gold
Hopefully they won't get a 'Game Over'
It should.
🤣🤣 If not, it should!
Lmao it definitely should
My local gas stations both have this sound as the one that plays when "ringing up" an item...I think they made that pun on purpose.
God tier
whats actually happening is that the alternate universes collide at convenient stores, and whenever you hear that ring sound, thats the sound of currency being used in that alternate universe.
Title: Gas Station Sonic the Hedgehog?????
Intro: "You've read the title, so you already know what this is about."
Me: I really don't.
Nexpo: *is a creepy channel*
Also Nexpo: *"So Sonic is real-"*

I have NEVER heard the sound but now I really want to. I feel left out.
Watch gas station encounters
Wait what!?!?!?
I hear it all the time
watch gameplay of sonic running through a loop and you'll hear it like, 5 times in a row

I honestly didn’t think I would see a ghost in this video but then the Dreamcast showed up
The xbox is going the way of the dreamcast. All I see is gamepass surviving next generation. lol
Dreamcast still isn’t dead, just burn games on discs and pop ‘em in. Heritage For The Future will never die.
@@GreenAndGoth Wait there's Heritage for the Future on Dreamcast??? So my PlayStation heart isn't crushed??
that's a hell of a mystery no one thought was a mystery and didn't even really need solving, but damn if it didn't just get solved so nice work
"I absolutely needed to know why gas stations used this sound, running out of options and feeling desperate, I booked a flight to Japan."
Sorry, any video that's about solving something inconsequential just reminds me of Nick Robinson.
If only Nexpo went that far

Am i the only person who has never heard a cash register make a sonic sound???
I literally work at a gas station and I've never heard this in my life? Just as confused as you are buddy
@@TheFlamingMarshmallow As stated, it's likely this only occurs with Gilbarco Veeder-Root cash registers. However, not every convenience store uses them, so they wouldn't have the Sonic rings sound effect.
Ok, but have you heard one make tue old ICQ sounds?
@Bingo Bango no you definitely aren't, I have never heard it either, if anything I usually think it's an error.

@@SekiYuriFFXIV I've literally never heard it in any state so it might not be an Argentine thing
wait wha-

Yeah, I live in Canada and have never heard this.
I’m in Florida, and from North Carolina, this noise doesn’t and didn’t exist
God, I am always extremely embarrassed whenever my card isn't read properly and the machine loudly annouces "Oh no."
Even worse is hearing "Aw yeah! This is happenin'!" every time I pay in cash and the register needs to be opened.
lmao is that a thing?? someone has to make a video of this stuff, most of us in other countries couldn't dream of something so ridiculous.

dedpxl Unfortunately this one is a joke, but that would be incredible
I'm not even joking when I say this is my favorite Nexpo video. It's just so random but really interesting.

Wait how?
now that's cool
You better post a video
what brand? might be worth a lot of money
BGM:
Donkey Kong Country - Aquatic Ambience
Resident Evil Remake - Save heaven
Oh my god I thought I was the only person to notice this shit, everyone I know tells me I'm crazy when I mention the sonic ring cash out sound thing
You know what's weird? At the end of a Sonic level it counts up your score, and after that it makes what I think is a cash register sound effect.
*KACHINGGG*
Yo I can totally hear it in my head
Ka-chings don't sound like ka-chings on cash register speakers. You gotta use rings.
The "Sonic" sound effect is just a generic copyright-less sound like most of those from Doom.
It's two notes played on a Yamaha FM synthesizer
i think i read somewhere that its almost impossible to copyright sound effects because they don't fall under the category of music and in a few cases where companies did take each other to court "disney vs whoever" disney would always lose because of that.
@@vaguesoft8445 sounds like 3 notes
I still hear the Doom Door sound effect in movies and Tv shows all the time. It is kind of like the Wilhelm Scream heard in tons of movies.

Me, a Briton who has never heard a cash register make this sound: Hmmm, ya know I've always wondered why they do that
Yeah, our cash registers make more 'grindy' kind of noises. Like dial-up internet back in the 90s.
@Astolfo I think it might be predominantly a US thing. I live there, and I hear those damn register sounds all the time. It kinda freaks me out every time I hear it, like, "wait wtf, is that the Sonic ring sou--oh, wait, shit, that's just the register."
Astolfo Yeah, I’ve been in convenience stores at night and that’s basically how it feels lmao
I've never heard a cash register make that sound.
I live in New Zealand and the area I live in I've never heard that noise from a cash register
Nexpo: makes video about the use of Sega Genesis’ sound effects from Sonic The Hedgehog
Also Nexpo: includes music from Super Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country in the background
God, I love this channel.
And yes! Please do more of these short 7ish minute rando’s in between the main uploads. I really enjoyed it, as I have been wondering about this topic for YEARS now, just never thought to really look into it. I noticed the DK Country music (the underwater theme???) and wondered if it was just me thinking it sounded that way!!! 😂😂😂
