Thank you. I just ordered some Mylar tape to fix my old Gemeinhardt. It’s a beginner flute, but I like having a backup.

Thanks for this great tip! I couldn't find Mylar tape but got some thin aluminium tape - which matches the flute colour exactly - and after a couple of tries, my head joint is now a perfect fit! As you say, though, it doesn't seem to work with the foot joint - strangely. Anyway, now I don't have to keep adjusting the head joint as it stays put. Thanks again. :-)

Hey Lance - wondering if you have ever tried any of those 'resonance' crowns & bridges that some have been touting? Curious if they actually increase resonance overall or maybe just to the proximity of the player...

Yes, I've tried both. I've used a Lefreque bridge on my last flute for a few months. I've only tried a crown/stopper system but didn't use it long term. In the end, I think I just prefer a headjoint that I love that is well fit. However, the crown can definitely make a difference. A lot of makers are selling crowns a la carte (esp. heavy crowns). These can definitely change the responsiveness of the headjoint. My next video will be about testing the head cork which can also massively affect this.

@@LanceSuzuki Looking forward to it, Lance... BTW, have been using your suggestions about resonance & efficiency. Developing well...

Whaaaat? That tiny strip is all you need??? Then a whole roll of myler tape should last several lifetimes passed down as an heirloom. I find that the most common thing in our primary (elementary) school setting is foot joints falling off during lessons and rehearsals.

Haha! Yes, that roll should last a REALLY long time! I've tried the tape on footjoints before but didn't have much success there. It seems to work better on headjoints unfortunately..

I also thought that to produce a good sound it’s a combination of resonance thru the joint and air tightness of the joint. Please explain. Thank you Lance!!

      Hi Kirk,
I've been told by pro repair techs that too tight is not good. Also, from my personal experimentation, I agree. There is a point of diminishing returns for tightening the fit. It also makes it more difficult to align/tune the instrument and the tape becomes less secure and falls off. However, the great thing about this technique is that you can experiment and choose what feels best for your needs. Thanks for your question!

ive done this for an entire year but recently, the tape has been coming off after a day so im constantly fixing it after rehearsal or individual practice 😭 im so annoyed by it that im sending it to get repaired as well as a much needed COA. thankfully i have a warranty on it so i wont have to pay anything

I noticed you only applied a very small strip of tape to the headjoint. I would have thought that a large piece of tape is needed to wrap around the circumference of the headjoint. Why only a small amount of tape? Thank you...

My headjoint already fits pretty well on its own, so I just went for a micro-adjustment using a sliver of tape. However, with a looser headjoint, I would use a larger piece. In the past, I've had tape wrapped all the way around. In this case, the headjoint wouldn't fit if I did that.

So sorry I didn’t get to this sooner. When I have trouble with this, I sometimes use a microfiber cloth to get extra good grip. Just make sure you are only grabbing the tube and not the keys and rods. When you get it apart, be sure to clean both ends of the connection with alcohol and a soft cloth or qtip.
