- For the last 15 years, the wrestling video game landscape has been absolutely dominated by 3 letters: WWE. Not since the release of TNA iMPACT in 2008 have gamers received a true, high level alternative to the king. Until now! AEW Fight Forever, the long awaited video game debut of All Elite Wrestling, is here. If you’re watching this, you’re an AEW fan, and you want to hear that this game is good. Or you’re an AEW hater and you’re hoping I say it’s bad, and you’ll be upset and tell me I’m wrong if I say otherwise. Either way, you cared enough to check out my review, which I thank you for. I’d probably trust this review more than anything from IGN or Gamespot. This is a guy who understands and loves wrestling games. Wrestling has been missing a fun factor over the years, this seems refreshing

Isn’t it shady that reviews from people came out a minute after servers launched for easily access? I believe for everyone, it came out at 6 AM PST and there was a review at 6:01

@@PICFL1 Even then, I've seen a lot of questionable reviews from IGN...Like when they based the RE 2 remake...or when they rate certain games highly that don't deserve it. Seems money centered to me.
@@ManAlsume Why would it be "shady"? The review embargo ended at the same time the Elite edition launched. I am not sure why you think that's shady? Review codes were sent out last week to critics, youtubers and media outlets. THQ Nordic has an embargo policy for all their published titles.

@@616Entertainment It absolutely was! You answered a lot of questions I had for it as well as showing unique footage I had yet to see anywhere else so far. As someone who mostly plays a fantasy booking style of game with my own CAWs, I'm mostly disappointed in the limited creation options. That said, I've been looking for my No Mercy fix these last 20 some years so I'll still probably get it eventually as soon as I figure out whether to get it on PC or consoles 🤔!

It makes sense that Tony didn't know who Statlander was since the story starts with the very first AEW PPV. It's the story of them creating the brand.
I honestly think this is a chance for AEW to bring in more fan's. Maybe even some who never even liked wrestling but played the older games could take an interest.

I bought the Elite Edition and have been playing since the early unlock this morning. I've been having a lot of fun with it and echo your thoughts exactly. I've seen a number of mixed reviews floating about, so it was refreshing to see someone else who enjoys the game as much as I do. Is it a little barebones in terms of match modes and character creation? Yes. However, the actual wrestling gameplay itself is top-notch and reminds me of the N64 classics I played as a kid.
I actually don't really follow AEW but am interested in a new wrestling game. So I was simply hoping that it is a good game that can be some fun.

Great review, I love the breakdown of everything. The game looks like it plays really well, albeit doesn't look as good as WWE 2k23. Now they just need to beef up other details like creative department (especially create a title) and things like commentary and I think it'd be a major contender. I do hope they keep their promise of making this a live service style game where they are just constantly updating it and sticking to the one game.
2K certainly has better graphics, but (*in my opinion*) this is way, way more fun to play.
This sounds like it's exactly what I was expecting for their first time out.

Lack of in-game commentary and the limited CAW modes seem like huge oversights in 2023, but Fight Forever seems like a great first effort overall. I’ll have to check it out!

@@robertwarf3316this game was good for maybe 3 or 4 days then it got boring. It's not even finished. It's missing so much. The creation suite sucks a bag of dicks. The pin system is broken. The online is a joke. There are so many problems with this game. And it's been out for over a month and know we have no idea when an update is coming if one is in fact even coming out. The dlc dates turned out to be lies. This is trash and should not have come out for at least 6 more months.

I just noticed that "Fight Forever!" is the tagline in Street Fighter V Arcade Edition's back cover. Also, I'm glad this game seemed to turn out well. I'm probably not returning to this genre (and I haven't watched a single AEW show ever) but wrestling fans deserve a fun game. The most recent one I've played is 2K19 and it was the least playable piece of interactive media I've ever experienced in my entire life.
Yeah they had a lawsuit. One of the reasons it took so long to come out.
Personally, I’m glad there’s no commentary. I almost always turn it off after a few hours in WWE games because it’s so repetitive. Music is much better imo

Thank you so much for this review, Ian. I’ve been excited for this game since its reveal, and after hearing everything you said, I just got more excited😁. Hearing you legitimately say that Fight Forever does indeed play like the AKI games, brings so much joy, as this is what I wanted for years, and now that it’s possible, I can’t wait to recreate the fun magic, all over again. It does suck tho, hearing there are no multi person ladder matches and no cage matches, as those would’ve been insane for this game. Here’s hoping in the future, that they add those options, as well as more creative suite options, and I’m very excited to see future roster members that are gonna be added. I truly hope AEW considers making ROH and NJPW wrestlers as DLC options as those would definitely make this game, all the more crazy and wild, in the dream match department, or nostalgia department for reigniting old feuds and that. Overall, thank you for this review, Ian. You made me more excited for this game, and I can’t wait to start playing it soon, to create new memories I’ll remember forever.😁

I don't know if you've played wwe 2k22 or 2k23 but they are almost a complete redo of the series the overbearing simulation style gameplay restrictions are for the most part: If you want to jump off a ladder in a fatal 4-way tlc match with andre the giant through another ladder bridge go ahead. So although this game severely outdoes WWE, 2k have actually been implementing fast arcade style gameplay.
I will admit i hared 2k's annoying simulation gameplay from 15-20 but 22 and 23 are some of the most fun ive had in a wrestling game in ages.
I played 2K22 and couldn't have a fun Hell in a Cell match. Going near a ring post locked me into a walking animation for like 3 seconds. The AI kept locking into the animation over and over. One punch would have me selling off to the side, toward the post... locking me into an animation. It's not what I want.
I really enjoyed 2K18. That was the last one I spent time with.
The last game I had played was 2k18 and i just stopped caring and i picked up 2k23 and it was really good it reminded me of the early 2010 thq games even tho i like chaos and mayhem like this game seems to have, 2k provided a fun mix of both

@@imdatguy0224 I agree but its still a fairly decent indicator of how well the game is made. You shouldn't form your own opinions based on metacritic but its also worth taking into consideration.
Cage match omission is truly nuts! I don't need commentary during matches. It's typically bad anyways. Crowd sounds amazing. The actual wrestling is top notch. Feels slightly faster than No Mercy, but slower than HTCP. Perfect middle ground.
I hope they patch in some kind of Universe mode. It’s not really that special of a mode. Just something to keep track of rosters and shows instead of having to do it all with pen and paper in exhibition like we did as kids (like I did, at least). A very basic mode to structure a few shows and monthly PPVs would go a long way in giving this replay value. Or the ability to edit career mode rosters like SYM and HCTP.
After watching the whole video, the career mode has sold me. I’d love a Universe mode, even a very simple one, but the career mode here looks like more fun than we’ve had in a long time and it looks like you have more control over your path with little things like competing on b-shows, rather than the heavily scripted and linear modes that started with the first Smackdown vs Raw.
Still, a universe-type mode is needed if this game is gonna be treated as a service for several years. I didn’t just play exhibition in 2k19 for 3+ years. As barebones as universe is, it keeps things somewhat interesting without the tedious record-keeping or booking everything in your head.
That'd be cool. I just focus on one person at a time and play through their "feuds" as I go.
A bit sad that there aren't many CAW features. But this seems like a great start for AEW video game franchise. I wonder what amazing stuffs the studio will pull out about 3 years from now. Thanks for a short, clean and organized review!

I am eating crow, I didn’t expect a lot of the game deals channel I watch to have reviews of the game. But yours remained the first and most prominent.
Initially I wasn’t feeling it. My biggest fear came true as I felt it’s TNA Impact once again, as the signatures and finishers gets the spotlight while normal grapples remains generic moves that everybody has.
BUT. After this review and you given a positive insight and liken it to No Mercy(I’ve never played No Mercy) and playing a little bit more, I’ve found the magic and can’t wait to play more…although the lack of gimmick matches does hinder its creativity. I’m happy to say that I like it and you like it.

Review was Spot on. In a months time, I've put in over 115hrs into fight forever. The gameplay is addictive as hell, fun, easy to pick up, but deep enough for true competitive play. There are definitely issues, and hopefully... HOPEFULLY yukes and AEWGames address it (lack of CONTENT like match types, shop items, creation items, gameplay tweaks, ect), but if they do... This game could end up being a truly great wrestling game.

Just playing exhibition matches and going for titles while I get used to the controls/gameplay will keep me going for a good while, my only wish is that THQ/Yukes don't hang around and are quick! to get updates out there, if they can add a little more polish here & there and obviously add more content then I really feel they can take this game to a much higher level🤞

For me, gameplay is king. It deeeefinitely needs more content added, but the foundation is most important, and I think they nailed the skeletal structure.

I got this yesterday since I preordered it and I’m impressed with it honestly. I was a little worried when I’d read online that there were issues that delayed it but it’s exactly like a modern day WWF No Mercy. People doing various reviews get caught up on the lack of creation suite content or the lack of gimmick matches. But they forget, this is a base game! The Smackdown series on the PlayStation consoles were great but try playing the original game, it was severely limited in creation suite compared to what it eventually became. Same with any series of pro wrestling games on any platforms. Also, this game will have many dlc additions and updates so things can always be fixed and/or added later on. AEW Fight Forever gets gameplay right in a way that even the 2k WWE series has not and also doesn’t have the same amount of bugs that all 2k WWE games have been notorious for having. This is a very impressive game for what all it offers for AEW’s first attempt at a video game and it offers us true pro wrestling game fans a much needed alternative. The 2k WWE games are fun too but we’ve needed something different for years and now we have it. I can’t wait until The Wrestling Code is released next year too. Variety in anything is great and AEW Fight Forever gives us all that and then some.

Awesome job with the review! It's been a long time aince I've heard a ton of hype around a wrestling video game. Hopefully this will lead to many more from AEW. Getting closer to the Metal Gear retrospective! 💪🔥🙌
As a creation fiend I'm definitely disappointed to hear the creative side is lacking. Making wrestlers is my favorite thing so I'll probably wait until they add more options. I love creating my own wrestlers and creating attires that aren't included in games and not having that opinion or to change color options is a disappointment. Creating wrestlers,belts, stables and even adding custom music is some of my favorite stuff to do, such a disappointment.
Match types that need to be added- Cage Matches, 2/3 Falls. Six Man Tag, Backstage Interactive Brawls, Tornado Tag, First Blood, 6 man Battle Royal, Gauntlet and Table Match
Add another 16-20 DLC wrestlers like Hager, Samoa Joe, Claudio, Acclaimed, Lethal, Swerve, Gunn Club, Toni Storm, Hayter, Athena, some legends like Taz, Arn Anderson and Billy Gunn
Finally I’d like to see create a show or ppv, where you take control of 8 matches or so book them and have show pyro and run ins and interviews backstage, injuries etc.
Haven’t read all the comments but just saw you CAN modify the wrestlers outfits by going to create a wrestler / modify wrestler. Game changer 🤘🏻
As somebody who owns the game it’s ok . It’s not worth the 60$ asking price . It’s fun but just not enough modes it’s the bare minimum

You're the only youtuber I trust to review this game now that Joe Gagne's Wrestling Arcade hasn't existed in years.
I am not a fan of AEW or many of its wrestlers but I want this game because I grew up on the AKI games.
I am glad that the battle royales no longer play like the WWE simulation minigames but I have a question and hope. Can you immediately clothesline a new opponent out of the ring or big boot them or strike them hard next to the rope to cause them to fly out like the old WCW/NWO Revenge or No Mercy? That's how I loved playing the battle royals back then. I would immediately clothesline the opponents out after Irish whipping them to the ropes or I would big boot them over the top rope using Kevin Nash.

I loved your review. I am not bothered by entrances, they are boring to me. I dont mind the creation suite, as I never create either. Gameplay is king for sure. Not having a cage match or multi-person ladder match is lame, but lets hope it gets incorportated later. Maybe blood and guts? thanks for all you do!
I have this game on my switch and on my Xbox series S and it runs pretty smooth. Just needs a couple of patches and more updates to add in more wrestlers really enjoying it. I hope you’re liking it and you’re enjoying it as well. Thanks for being awesome.
Cool thing about the tables, you can use them as a shield to block attacks.
I've been having an issue where I kick the opponent and rather than setting the table up and putting them on it, my guy just drops it. That wasn't happening when I first got the game, it's strange.
I'm so happy they gave you a review code! Really enjoyed this. Bought the Switch AND the PS5 version cause I'm mad. PS5 obviously looks and runs better but the Switch version is still good.
So after attending AEW Dynamite for the first time in my hometown Hamilton, Ontario Canada last night I already had this game pre-ordered. Watching the game footage in-arena before the show was aired made me so happy i was picking it up the next day. Got it today and messed around with some of the exhibition matches and some of the other modes. You are so right with that pick and play/No Mercy style. Just like No Mercy and the games in that series, even if you are not a wrestling fan, I think non wrestling fans would like this game for the simple game mechanics. I haven't gone deep into the game yet and still yet to get into RTE.When it comes to the creation suite, I think its perfectly fine for me because when I tried with doing one on WWE 2K23 I found it too overwhelming as I don't need that much detail for my CAW. I agree yes there can be some improvements as well but so far I am satifisfied with the game. The only downside is here in Canada they did not offer (well ast least on the physical copies) the Elite Edition and was just the standard pre-order bonus of Matt Hardy. My friend got the same game digitally for the same price on the Playstation Store and managed to score the Elite Edition. I just hope that later on we can also get the same DLC here even if it has to be purchased. Great review of the game as I was holding off on watching any reviews of the game until I played it myself.

I've been playing almost none stop for two days now. I jumped in Saturday and played through Sunday. I haven't played a wrestling game in over 20 years! But playing this game blew my mind. This game is AWESOME!!!! The level of detail (aside from physical character creation features being a bit slim) and selection is simply intimidating. Each and every wrestler has their own moves and match their real life counterparts from taunts to basic moves to special moves to finishers. I am IN LOVE with this game. I really hope it sells like hot cakes because I can't stop gushing about it.
I tried it. I couldn’t get behind or dig the controls. I couldn’t switch from one opponent to another in multi person matches. It just seemed odd to me. I instantly regretted buying this game and I deleted it after an hour of gameplay.
Click the left stick in, dude. The game tells you that.
It’s nice that Yukes is back to making wrestling games again, and AEW Fight Forever is bringing back the old school of arcade style of wrestling games. Here’s to another hope for future AEW sequels in the near future.
The game looks incredibly fun, but I really hope they aren't going to charge people for things that should've just been in the game to begin with. Including a few extra wrestlers here and there like Danhausen and Bunny as paid DLC is fine, but it's going to be really scummy if we get something like a "steel cage" DLC for a few dollars or "creation suite DLC pack" for $4.99. I want this to be Fight Forever; not Pay Forever.
Ill buy it regardless, just to check it out to see how it feels.

I have this game on Xbox Series X and I can definitely vouch for most of the things you said in this review. For someone who played the hell out of WWF No Mercy back in the day, the mechanics felt very familiar and while I agree that there isn't quite as much content as we would like, what is here is very good. I will say that some of the dialog in Road to Elite mode is absolutely hilarious!
Definitely buying it and it looks fun, but I have a feeling the game will get old quick due to the clear lack of game modes: no cage matches, no backstage areas, no 3 vs 3 or anything beyond 2 vs 2, no guest referee, and on and on....I really hope they'll add these modes at some point.
I've been having a blast with it by doing what I used to do in the SD! games: I attach myself to one wrestler and play through "feuds" in exhibition mode. I defend their title against challengers that I pretend are earned contenders. When I have a specific banger, I'll do a rematch, maybe blowoff in a ladder match, etc.
The game could really, really use some more gimmicks and roster updates. I'm very clear about that. But as a foundation? It's great. Gameplay is king, man. And that's here.

Great review. I really wish there was a demo for this game. I'm back and forth as to whether or not I want to buy it, but I really want to test out the game feel before I make a decision.

Biggest letdown of them all: no backstage areas. The best part of No Mercy was irish whipping your opponent into the entrance and having access to a corridor leading to different areas. I did it in every match I played back in the day. That alone would have made this a day 1 buy for me.
Great video, I got a couple of questions. 1. I heard it might have a season pass and online battle royal like Fortnite, does it? 2. Is there a way to turn the blood off? Once again, great vid as always.
I’m more simulation than arcade I grew up on revenge and no mercy I don’t fallow AEW I’m glad this game exists for the fans. Variety is needed and it looks like you’ve got it enjoy

Not a big fan of AEW but still wanting this game to be good. I do not enjoy how 2K plays anymore and so many of the mocap moves look bad or lack impact. Can already tell just from seeing footage of the game that the moves being animated makes everything look great. If this even captures SOME of the feeling of the great old games (and you say here that it does), that's a success to me. Fans of wrestling games would always say, when it came to wishing a new game would come out or for licenses to change hands, that you have to expect a new game in a new series is not going to be great at first. So if create modes are lacking or career mode isn't great, that's unfortunate but expected. No commentary, again I can see that being a time/resource heavy thing that gets left out of a first game. I'd rather have no commentary than repetitive and distracting.
To your point about 1v1 ladder matches, I saw someone on Twitter say they encountered multi man ladder matches in the career mode, but didn't see any way to unlock them or make it available for the rest of the game. Strange. Sucks that there is no cage match.
We've been asking for years for a wrestling game that feels like AKI. I feel like people have to support this game, or forfeit your right to complain anymore. You can't hold out for perfect. It sounds to me like this game did enough right to deserve support. If people don't buy it because of things they perceive as missing or negative, well, don't expect a sequel or ongoing support.
I know they said they don't aim for this to be an annual series and they plan to just support the game with updates, I don't know how much I really believe that. It would be nice to think that missing things can be added afterwards, but I won't count on that happening. There is talk of a paid "battlepass" kind of system where maybe they can add content and continue to bring in some money, I'd be willing to support that. If all of a sudden there is a new "season" for the game and it adds a cage match or whatever, that will be cool.

I’m mixed on them not having Cage matches because I still have Vietnam style flashbacks to the Day of Reckoning games’ Cage Matches in their story/career modes.
At the same time, AEW has a different style of cage match compared to WWE and even Impact.
I purchased the game and it performed up to my enthusiasm, It reminded me of No Mercy, but there is something that I miss in contemporary games, even this game, and I only found it in No Mercy and some Japanese games in 90s.
It is the level of jumping from the top of the corner. Jumping in those games actually suggested that a heavy body rise into the air and hit hard on the floor of ring.
It was great every time, and I haven't found a game since No Mercy that has mastered this feature.

It looks and sounds like they definitely delivered on combining the gameplay and features of the AKI games, with the look of the WWE 2K games. It's a shame that there's no commentary, but are there ring announcements for entrances? Just wondering.

I think this was a good start for an AEW game. I'm really looking forward to seeing a roadmap for their plans going forward. Gameplay feels like good return to arcade. More emphasis on balance is needed. Too many times there is an apparent rubberbanding effect when I've got the upper hand. Anytime I try to extend the match out past that 5 minute average duration, I end up losing to a light strike grapple. Now couple that with a farcical mash button pin escape that feels unescapable after some arbitrary damage counter, there's not kicking out. I feel like we need a more tangible way of trying to kick out of pins.
Yes, the creative suite is limited. But my biggest disappointment was something you touched on: being able to alter wrestling attires, if even just color swapping. I figured that featured would be a given. Hopefully it is something they plan on including in the future.

I don’t have the game, but other reviewers have mentioned that you have to edit the teams in the game to have them together.
