Thanks for posting. I was a freshman at Iowa in 77, so this was one of the first college games I ever went to. HUGE game. Still remember some of the players: Tom Rusk, Dennis Mosley ...
Incredible that Iowa had such immense football support in the 1970s despite years of futility playing football in the Big 10. Commings' teams had tough defense, but his offenses rarely moved the ball. For years Iowa just could not compete with Michigan, Ohio State and the Purdues of the world. Those 1977 and 1978 Iowa uniforms were godawful. Thank God for Hayden Fry, the black tiger hawk helmet, and the standing tight end formations that would arrive in 1979. That dude turned the Big 10 on its head in short order.
How many schools that had endured 15 straight non winning seasons would still get that kind of crowd support and fan reaction. during the 20 year period that Iowa went without a winning season, we averaged 85% of capacity in attendance.
Both Iowa State's quarterbacks were from Iowa. Terry Rubley was from Davenport and John Quinn was from Des Moines. Rubley led his team (Davenport West) to the 4A championship in 1974, where they beat West Des Moines Dowling (where Quinn went to high school). Quinn lost in the state finals again in 1976 when Davenport Central beat Dowling for the state title. The good old days when the Davenport schools ruled Iowa football.
Geez, look at how small Kinnick was back in 1977. In this game it almost looks like Jack Trice because of the fans sitting on the grass in the corners of the stadium.
My sister went to Iowa in 1982 thru 1986, my dad and I walked around Kinnick in the summer of 1981when the were staring to remove the grass and put in bleachers at the north end what was student section.
Two things 1. Did Iowa St. Really have Beat Iowa on their uniforms or am I imagining that?. 2. Iowa had a hot diverse group of cheerleaders and those caddyshack golf/tennis country club uniforms man they were on to something!!!!
Hayden Fry also brought his knowledge of marketing and merchandising to the next level. If you weren't there, then seeing these clips show the difference. Also, a different time, fans/students sat in the knot-hole sections (grassy slope notches in the North EZ corners of the stadium) and occasionally smoked "grass" - I was there as a kid (with my college big brother) and witnessed it.

Gotta love the dude at 10:57 cheering toward the camera, he finally gets his friend turned around and they cut right away!
“Take a look at that honey”

Looks like they are playing on Boise St.'s field.
THANK YOU for posting this!!
This game likely saved Bob Commings' job, for one year, which is when Hayden Fry became available.
@mongoose704 that's one of the main reasons Hayden Fry would come to Iowa a couple years later.
I was an usher at this game. Surprised we didn't have to cart anybody out with a massive MI.
That turf just looks downright painful.
I was in college marching band at the tail-ed of the Astroturf era. It just tore your knees to shreds.
Iowa State had a strong team in 1977 while Iowa sucked throughout the 1970s. The Cyclones just didn't show up for this game.
The offensive line did not show up. The quarterback was running for his life, through out the game.
oh and hows your wrestling team doing?
Bring Back The Bota!
And imagine the goal posts getting torn down and passed to the top row of the stadium these days. Not gonna happen.
congratulations your now 20-39 against Iowa in football and 23-41 against Iowa in basketball.
Is this a rivalry yet?
did anyone catch the "little honey" comment at 7:08 or the comment about the Tome Foste Fan Club at 6:04
@bman546
I know, "Beat Iowa". That's some elementary shit.
Didn't anyone wear school colors or school clothing? good grief.
Pull on some jeans and go back then.

And the clowns won in 2011...in both football and men's basketball!
