  • Chuck Long completed 29 of 39 passes for 461 yards and 6 touchdowns as Iowa defeated #19 Texas 55-17 in a rainy 1984 Freedom Bowl. It was the inaugural Freedom Bowl and the bowl dissolved after the 1994 edition. Tune in at 7:50 for a vintage U of Iowa commercial.

We had moved to Southern California from Iowa in 1983 and were able to go to this game. It was the first Iowa game I was able to attend live and we didn't care that it was raining. Thanks for posting. Great memories!

I spoke to chuck long 2 weeks before this game. He said Texas made him nervous. They were capable of raining TDs all day long.

I remember this game! My step dad was a huge Texas fan. He told me before the game, "Boy, Texas is going to kick Iowa's a$$." His sulking after the game was so sweet. Lol.

I remember this one . . . Texas was the heavy favorite coming into the game, and Iowa just STOMPED them, 55-17.

I was there with the Hawkeye Marching Band. A miserably wet game, but fantastic outcome!! Fun to reminisce!

5:28 I question if that was a touchdown for Texas.

I was young jarhead stationed at El Toro when I attended this game. Cold and miserable all night, hardly anyone in the stands and it was one of the best nights of my life.

I saw on the screen that Iowa was 3-2 vs. the SWC at the time of the Freedom Bowl game. Who were the SWC teams Iowa played up until 1968 before the bowl game? Thanks!

6:10 -- And the touchdown was by ... #26 Eddie Polite, I think. Is that right? Yes, it definitely 100% absolutely WAS Eddie Polite wearing #26 scoring the touchdown. Actually, the DNA results just came in confirming that the touchdown-scorer was Eddie Polite. We couldn't be more certain about the fact that it was Eddie Po -- oh wait, no it was #35 Fred Bush.
[Camera is focused the entire time on Bush being congratulated by his teammates.]

And we didn't? Chuck Long was hurt during the season and we didn't have our best weapon, Ronnie Harmon. Owen Gill was hurt.
You had two all americans in the secondary playing including four time pro bowler Jerry Grey. Sure didn't look like it 8^)

That sort of thing seems to impact bowl games quite a bit. The team that really wants to be there can often take it to a team it would normally have a much more difficult time against.

What an amazing drop back passer Long was i can't believe he didn't pan out in the NFL. I've heard Harmon drove back from Pasadana the following season in a brand new Corvette. Four fumbles and a dropped touch down pass. He should have been in federal prison instead

I remember the old Ram coach George Allen coming into the booth and saying that Chuck Long "could play in the NFL now!" He was drafted by the Detroit Lions who were more interested in keeping the Minnesota Vikings from getting him than in getting another quarterback. It was still a stupid way for Wayne Fontes and Detroit Lions management to use a first-round draft pick.

I wouldn't say that Blake Bortles is a waste because of the season he's just had. However, I think Marcus Mariota needs to polish his game a little more.

Not only that, but Long suffered the same fate that a lot of first-round, number-one-overall picks suffer: The Lions' managment paid him a _ton_ of money (for the time), handed him the starting job, and said, "Okay, Mr. Heisman Trophy runner-up, _save us_!" And, he couldn't get the job done.

    • @tommack352

With the team the Lions had that year, they went through several quarterbacks. Chuck Long should have been carrying a clipboard that year, not playing in a system he was still learning. Chuck Long finally ended up as a backup quarterback for the Rams and did not play much. After years of frustration, he returned to the college ranks and coached there. He was pretty good as an assistant, but his time at San Diego State was a nightmare.

Tom Mack Agreed that Long should have been carrying a clipboard that year, but like I said, that's what happens when you're the Heisman Trophy runner-up, and given a _monster_ contract. (Thankfully, the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement has somewhat reined in rookie salaries.) But yeah, I followed Long's career from the Lions to the Rams, and then through the college coaching ranks. Kinda disappointing, considering the credentials he had.

Tom Mack That and the Lion's o line was either bad or didn't want to protect him. I've heard both theories.

It is sad that Texas could not get up for this game, shows the poor leadership of Aikers. Also shows just how arrogant was Texas and many of its old SWC teams and fans.
My sister was a junior at Iowa that year and knew many of the players. They wanted this for Coach Fry since they knew he was ostracized by many within the SWC because he was one of the first coaches to recruit black players back in the 1960s.
