5:52 it's actually rather nice to see the Labyrinth from outside, under a night sky too! A break from the cramped ruins and caves.

Hey, the mod just got updated! Aquatic Ruin now has an Act. 2, there's new music and Metropolis has been replaced with Wacky Workbench. I recommend you give a try to the update.

In the early prototype ideas for Sonic 2, original developers were thinking of Wood Zone would be before Metropolis Zone or a single zone of Wood Zone before Metropolis. I think that’s might be the idea the developers of this hack took from. Also 2-3 years ago, in a show I think on Japan (maybe), some people from the original developer team of Sonic 2, were showing also some early prototype ideas of Sonic 2. The idea they were showing was an island map which had some named locations on and most of them were the names of the original Zones but in that map was a warp point which was giving to Sonic the ability of time traveling in the Future or Past. Something like Sonic CD.
In that images of the past, there was a location called Wood Zone and in present time the same location was a factory called Metropolis Zone. Again something like Sonic CD ideas that Robotnik was turning forests to factories or metal cities etc.
So that’s also a proof that back in the days, the developers wanted to combine somehow these 2 Zones.

P.S:
Maybe that was a good idea and an inspiration for the creation of Planet Wisp for Sonic Colors.
The forest, if you can see, has too many similar colors and high purple-green trees with Wood Zone and then the factory has some red-green color pallet as Metropolis...

Hilltop was supposed to be Emeral Hill's past, Wood Zone was Metropolis' past, all based on the original time travel concept for Sonic 2. I was active on the Sonic Retro forum back in the day the original sketches and the beta rom were discovered, and people put wood zone and metropolis side by side, noticing that they were basically the same kind of environment with the same possibiities for plataforming and mechanics for traps and stuff. Hilltop, on the other hand, has the same tiles, only a different color pallette than Emerald Hill.
Luiz Marcos yes that’s what I’m talking about. Happy to see that another fan has seen this.

i think those springs in hill top are there because hill top is the past of emerald hill and maybe you were suposed to travel to the present (emerald hill) using them
Fun Fact: Wood Zone Was gonna be a past version of Metroplis zone in sonic 2 but time traveling was scrapped so thats a lot of detail :D

Those pipes you mentioned are actually in mania, in Hydro City act 1.
The reason for the spring trap in hill top is because sonic 2 was originally going to have the time travel but was later given to CD and some of the spring traps had to stay so they could get the game out.
Hill Top zone is one seriously underrated zone imo; I think it would make a great zone in a Sonic Mania 2 game.

The Metropolis Zone music is actually just ripped straight from Sonic Hysteria's old ost (Metropolis Zone Past)
I love how they put the fight in metropolis zone as heavy Shinobi, Because he has astrons, just like the astrons in the original metropolis zone 😂

Although I did forget the legs had no hitbox I still refuse to abuse that because its one of my favourite bosses in the game so I prefer to fight it my idea of properly
If the bounty is still going on for Sonic 4 I figured it out. You damage boost from the enemy and while you are in the invincibility frames, spin dash jump to make it to the other platform.

You can make: Sonic mania Twitch chat vs. Billeh (Twitch chat will controll sonic/other characters, and BIllehBawb will make twitch chat life harder, by using !eggbox !green etc.)
