Amazing work! It boggles my mind how someone can take such poor care of a watch to begin with! I'm glad there are watchmakers like you who can breathe new life into these classics.
@Taylo Ren. That's a simplistic and very narrow-minded answer. Expensive wristwatches are purchased and worn by a wide range of society. For example, military personel, oil rig workers, construction industry, as well as those who wear watches as 'costume jewellery', or evening wear. I've had my submariner for over 20 years: I've served, I've ridden my motorcylce on almost every continent on earth, through African deserts to far reaching places such as Deadhorse, Alaska. It's taken some bashing, has many many miles under its belt but still works perfectly. Therefore, with such wide use as I've described above, through many tough terrains, in extreme temperatures, rugged landscape to formal dinners, the Rolex is made to last BUT is not immune to misshap when travel / events do not always go as planned. Maybe the owner was involved in a serious incident, that wasn't his/her fault, who knows! Anyway, the point is that it is entirely possible that this watch has had a tough life, so to say that someone, "...can take such poor care of a watch to begin with!...) is just guesswork on your part. No offence intended but please feel free to broaden your mind.

Just to give my two cents on how to get to this condition: My best guess would be somebody used the watch like it was intended to be used, as a sports watch rather than some bling just to flex. AFAIK ROLEXes are "work horses" known for precision but also sturdyness and the former owner may have put this to the test. At some time somehow the glass/crystal broke (due to impact?) and also water entered the casing (shouldn't have taken it into the shower with a broken glass?). Handed it in for repair/inspection and company denied to work on this piece, due to the water parts started corrosion and when testing how bad it was the crown broke off when trying to manipulate/make dials move... Then it went into a drawer until the owner decided to sell
