Its a shame Mr.Turner was long gone from the show at this point. I know he would've provided some comfort not only to Shawn, but Jack also. He probably would have adopted them both as well.

Cory didn't become the selfish one until Shawn was more grown and had been living with Mr Turner.
He also sacrifices himself to save Shawn later in the show, like when Shawn was going to join Harley's crew.
